Hi all
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I need an answer in order to write some competitor instructions!
In the UK, we will be asking competitors to upload via one of the local Listed Buildings pages on the English Wikipedia which are accessible eg via the page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listed_buildings_in_England
An example of a page which has recently been updated to use the WLM template is here (not all pages are complete yet):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grade_I_listed_buildings_in_Bristol
If there is no existing image of a buidling, clicking on the last column goes to the upload wizard, but if there is already an image it seems the competitor will need to do some manual work to find the listing code and upload separately. That is not good.
What would you recommend? Have I missed something, or do we need to change the list template so that it always has some sort of visible upload link?
Michael
Michael, This is a good question and the answer is that there is no function to replace the "empty picture" upload link. The listing code is the unique identifier, and looking this up is called the "discovery" side of the upload process. Discovery of the identifier can be done a number of ways: 1) searching in google for the house address should pull up the Wikipedia list item with the number 2) searching through the special google maps function available on the local WikiLovesMonuments website 3) Being at the listed building and reading the number from an information plaque

Hi Michael and all,
You raise a good point

goes to the upload wizard, but if there is already an image it seems the competitor will need to do some manual work to find the listing code and upload separately. That is not good.

Technically, this can be done easily. I guess it depends more on your community - for example, on fr.wp, nobody really cared and Maarten (and then I) just went ahead and tweaked the template ; I understand that on en.wp the NRHP project had to jump through some hoops (because of some placeholder policy there).
So yeah, an upload link for each monument can definitely be added - you just need to know if that is really what you want to have :)
Oh dear! See the thread below from the WLM International list.
It seems to me that we really must have a direct image upload link built in to the WLM template on en.W which works even where we have an image of a building already. Part of the purpose of the competition is to encourage new editors/uploads and we can't have a system that requires specialist Wiki knowledge in every case where there is already an image. We want lots of images of each building!
A question to those who know about bots: how difficult would it be to change the template on en.W, and then run an update script over all the the pages that have been done so far?
I'm not sure where it would be best to add the upload link, but it shouldn't be too intrusive as we may get resistance from the community. Is the technology behind the template capable of having, for example, a small '+" button which overlays any existing image and appears in the right hand corner? Or can anyone come up with something better?
Regards to all. It's looking good at the moment for the UK's first foray into this competition!
Michael

Hi michael,
actually this change would be fairly trivial. It would just be a matter of changing the mother template, and no need to 'fix' the individual pages - assuming that they all use that template (which is necessary anyway).
The main bottle neck for showing upload links even when there is already an image, is approval from the community, not the technical side. If need be, you could make this change on August 30, and revert that early October.
Hope that answers,
Lodewijk

I think the feature would be much more likely to be accepted if it was added and removed as suggested earlier. But then you'd need to test it in a sandbox or something to make sure it works.
