Hi everyone,
Last year the Wikimedia Foundation developed a Android mobile app for Wiki Loves Monuments. After September it was abandoned. But the app is open source, so now it's back as a community supported app. I rebuild the backend server in toollabs and Yuvi did his magic mobile tricks. Yuvi also works for the WMF mobile team, but he did all of this in his spare time as a volunteer.
You can download a test version of the app at https://tools.wmflabs.org/heritage/downloads/WLMMobile-debug.apk . It uploads to https://test.wikipedia.org so feel free to play around. Feedback is appreciated! For the people interested in helping with the development, see https://github.com/wikimedia/WLMMobile
You can file bugs at https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=Wiki%20Loves%20Monument... (for now component general, will ask for a mobile component)
Maarten
Note: If you still have the app from last year installed, this build will *not* install on your phone - you need to uninstall the older version to install this.
Thanks!
Ahh. I guess you can close https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53331 then :)

Also note that I won't be adding any new features at all - my aim is to just keep it from breaking apart :) If someone else can come forward to take over maintenance (the app is all HTML/CSS/JS) - I'll be happy to give them commit rights!
NEW MAINTAINERS FOR THE APP WANTED! :)
Awesome work Maarteen and Yuvi. Will play around with the app, see if there are any bugs needs to be sorted. Thanksss!!

Shouldn't the gerrit repo (apps/mobile/WikiLovesMonuments) be used? https://git.wikimedia.org/summary/apps%2Fmobile%2FWikiLovesMonuments

This is unfortunate. Isn't there a way to perform a transition of keys? Perhaps with an intermediate app.
If the certificate changes, so should do the app name. We can't expect the end users to manually deinstall the old one before installing. If nothing better, I would publish a WMF-signed update to the old one which simply leads you [when opened] to the app store page to install a new one.

Possibly, yes. We never used it that much, and I think that means we'll need to do a re-import. I could poke Chad at some point

I *do* have access to the WMF keys, but do not think it is wise to use that here. I agree that changing the name makes the most sense, will do so before release.

Right, so I'll change *both* the name and the certificate, and we'll be all good :) It is currently 'org.wikipedia.wlm', and we should be able to change it to 'org.wikilovesmonuments' without issue.
One of the things I've been thinking of is under whose account should this be published? I've a personal account on the Play store that we can put this on, but would be nicer if someone else can do that under a 'common' account. A Wiki Loves Monuments account, perhaps?

Yes, it should be a WLM account.
Are there any downsides/complications to setting up a dedicated Wiki Loves Monuments account?

This is mostly required. It would entail an account that multiple people can be granted access to (Google Accounts) - and more importantly, a signing key + passphrase that will have to be kept absolutely safe.
I tried creating a new organization Wiki Loves Monuments today to put this under there, but it requires a $25 payment. I don't mind paying for it myself, but am wondering if one of the chapters organizing this want to take that, and create an organization under their own name? So 'Organization' might be something like WMNL, and WikiLovesMonuments can be the app under it.

Hi Yuvi,
Please go ahead and we'll get it reimbursed from the Wiki Loves Monuments international budget (just follow-up offlist with Karthik) - an amount like $25 shouldn't be a controversial issue if that gets the . I think it would be confusing to make it a national organization - people might get the impression it is only a national app. Having an actual 'Wiki Loves Monuments' organization would be better.

+1 The way things are going, WLM will be making its own grant requests each year, so an independant budget totally separate from WMNL is a good idea I think. I am surprised about the $25 though because I thought the appstore on Android was supposed to be free.

Lodewijk has now sorted this out and we've a 'Wiki Loves Monuments' organization on Google Play now!
I'll push out a fixed build tomorrow here, and then publish to the market on 30th August or so.
We're finishing to update the press release from last year and we had a section about : Mobile app, is there any link we can provide for the Android app ?

Apologies for the delay in publishing the app.
I've updated http://tools.wmflabs.org/heritage/downloads/WLMMobile-debug.apk with what should be the final build (hopefully?). It still uploads to testwiki, and doesn't need you to uninstall the app from previous year. Can someone test before I push the version to Google Play?
Thanks!
I found an small login related bug that I reported here: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53631
But in general it seems to work fine, awseome work!
