Dear All,
I am delighted to announce on behalf of the Wikimedia Polska Association that this week we have finally signed an official agreement on partnership and cooperation with the National Heritage Board of Poland (NHB), which is the main state institution dealing with protection of cultural heritage monuments in the country. Wiki Loves Monuments is now under an Honorary Patronage of the Board (yay!).
Both parties to the agreement have obliged themselves, for instance, to inform about each other's projects; thanks to that obligation, news on Wiki Loves Monuments will be published on the NHB's homepage (http://www.nid.pl) and information about the project will be printed on all advertisement materials (posters, leaflets, invitations etc.) produced for the European Heritage Days.
Moreover, in accordance with the agreement, we have received the full registry of monuments in Poland which will uploaded on Wikipedia in (most probably) a few days' time. I believe this to be an amazing milestone for our Wikiproject.
The Wikiproject itself has significantly developed since our meeting in Berlin and now we have 40 *active* and enthusiastic members who are working on our lists of monuments, adding coordinates and pictures -- this makes us the most active Wikiproject of the Polish Wikipedia.
Furthermore, we have prepared a yet-unfinished category tree on Wikimedia Commons http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Cultural_heritage_monuments_in_Poland as well as a categorisation template with a full English translation http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Zabytek.
We are also in the process of securing a media patronage and, hopefully!, an Honorary Patronage of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, for which an answer we should receive in the next few days.
That would be it, if anyone has any questions, I am more than happy to answer them.
Regards, - -- Tomasz Kozłowski | [[user:odder]]
Hi Tomasz,
this sounds great! I am so glad things are going well!
I have been thinking in this light, maybe we should also set up a wlm-eu blog and put announcements like this on there? (fairly open blog) That could give this kind of partnerships a bit of extra international exposure.
Best,
Lodewijk

Tomasz, That is very cool - I like your category tree structure and I am very impressed that you are able to keep empty categories on Commons without having them speedily deleted! How did you do that? Also, since we said the monument lists reside on the home wikipedia, we created a page on Commons as a portal to all of these lists here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Lists_of_European_Monuments
The Poland page is not there yet. I assume because you made the categories that you didn't make this page, but you could make a page containing an overview map of the major categories that links to the categories.
Out of curiosity, now that Wikimedia Germany has over 16000 signatures for the Unesco petition, have you considered supporting that initiative? Has this even come up in conversations with the NHB? I noticed that the Italian Wikipedia is advertising a big banner on their homepage this week (maybe last week too, but I just noticed it this week). Regards, Jane

Jane, I haven't been thinking about the Commons categories like that and I honestly can't see the reason for them to be deleted -- they won't be empty in the future, we'll just need to wait a bit, for the categorisation process is ongoing :-)) As for the portal page, I will add links to our local Wikipedia lists of monuments that we have been creating, thanks for the information.
As for the Unesco petition, Wikimedia Polska hasn't considered supporting it -- all signatures coming from Poland are the decision of the supporting users. Most probably there will be no banner on the main page of the Polish Wikipedia due to the way the process has been organised: as you may probably know, a World Heritage Site nominee has to be proposed by a state -- not by the mean of a public petition, and this is what we have strong reservations about.
It is said that the initial reaction of the chapters at the Chapters' Conference in April was "overwhelmingly positive"; as far as I am concerned, the reaction of the Polish chapter's representatives was just lukewarm (reasons above). I've met with the National Heritage Board on 19 May and we haven't discussed this subject due to not having an official stance of our chapter.
Warm regards, - -- Tomasz Kozłowski | [[user:odder]]
Hi Tomasz ,
I'm very happy to hear this! Did you also talk about the European Heritage Days Forum [1]? I talked about it last week with the Council of Europe and the European Union when we had a meeting about the European Heritage Days (sorry, still have to write the report). We talked about involvement from the Wiki Loves Monuments community. As it is in Poland, it might be nice if Wikimedia Poland could get involved. More details later :-)

And this sounds even more awesome.
In France, we struggle to convince out Ministry, institutions and the like. Telling them how their European counterparts work with us (meaning how they might end up being the bad student of the cultural heritage class) might be a good argument.
No problem telling them that the Polish gov work with us? Would you happen to have some official statement we could point them to in case they ask?
Cheers,

Not at all -- feel free to mention the National Heritage Board of Poland cooperating with us very closely. We shall produce an official press release in a few days' time and translate it into English; for now, there is an information on the Board's official website -- just in Polish, unfortunately: http://www.nid.pl/idm,100,idn,1842,30-v-nid-honorowym-patronem-projektu-wiki-lubi-zabytki.html.
As for the Ministry, I shall inform you all about the outcome, hopefully the coming week.
