Hi all,
just a quick note: we JUST HIT ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND! And almost a week to go!
The 100.000th upload is from Porto, Portugal: http://twitter.com/#!/Effeietsanders/status/117990127292264448 / http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Igreja_de_Santa_Clara_001.jpg - it seems it was part of the Wiki takes Porto event!
Great work all, and one more week to go, so lets see if we can tenfold the submissions of 2010! (12.500)
Lodewijk
(just as a correction: It seems that it was a different city, Santarém. )

Fantastic result! Congratulations to all participants and organisers. There are many excellent submissions that will make the job for the jurors very hard.

Lodewijk, I was already blown away when we reached 75,000 images, so yes, I agree that this is a truly grand result and I think you should be very proud of this achievement, since it really started with your own efforts and vision. I can barely imagine it could be possible to reach a number of 125,000 images by Friday evening, but of course I have been using Nuno's statistics links regularly and I see that we are growing at a slightly "more than linear" rate.
Congratulations everybody! I am so proud to have been part of this effort this year! Jane

And to take a stranger milestone, we are now even past 111.111 :-)
But if it proceeds like this the 10 times last year will certainly be possible. Personally I also hope NL will have more then last year.

What amazes me more than the actual numbers of uploads is also the number of new users with more than one upload - this is a big improvement over last year and shows that the combination of the new uploader on Commons with the "campaign" tactics of the WLM organizers has really made a difference. I am already looking forward to our evaluation to see if anyone has any more brillant ideas to help us increase participation next year...
But what could we do next year to beat this result? Better mapping? Better id-lookups? Multi-lingual lists? All of EU? Africa? China? Alaska? Mars?

What amazes me more than the actual numbers of uploads is also the number of new users with more than one upload - this is a big improvement over last year and shows that the combination of the new uploader on Commons with the "campaign" tactics of the WLM organizers has really made a difference. I am already looking forward to our evaluation to see if anyone has any more brillant ideas to help us increase participation next year...
But what could we do next year to beat this result? Better mapping? Better id-lookups? Multi-lingual lists? All of EU? Africa? China? Alaska? Mars?

Again, I will write my opinion and suggestions in more details in the beginning October, not to start the discussion now, but I think for most countries (in particular, for the Netherlands) we will not be able to beat this year in terms of the number of pictures because the monuments will be over (in the Netherlands we are approaching now to the 60% mark, and by next September I hope it will be more like 75%, without anything left in the centers of big cities). I am not even sure that the Netherlands will repeat the last year mark in terms of the number of pictures this year. My vision is that we we should go to different dimensions, the most obvious being article creation, and differentiate the countries - at least those with the most monuments pictured from those which are only at the beginning. I think it is pretty much obvious we can not expand forever.
Cheers Yaroslav
I partially agree with you. Here in Norway it has been a big drawback that WLM didn't start until September, and also has been almost invisible, at least in Norway :(. Starting earlier would enable participants to photograph during their holidays, and also even possibly inside monuments - many close in August when the schools start again. Also, the weather is a part of the problem... So, at least publishing lists earlier, and thus enabling ppl making photos inside (where allowed) could be great.

We published a timeline. Some countries didn't stick to this timeline. This might have affected the success of WLM in these countries. We're going to do evaluations. Let's wait with drawing conclusions until then.

Yes.. Although in Poland we have work for at least next 3-4 editions of WML. The problem is that it is relatively easy to have many pictures of object in big cities - but the real pain in case of Poland is to got pictures of objects scatered in forestry and agricultural areas - especially that many of them are just in ruins. This is why we organise our "Wikiexpeditions" which are focused on such poorly covered areas. I guess for Russia, Ukraine, Slovakia etc.. it is probably the same story.
By the way - one of our most active WML participant: Roweromaniak:
http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedysta:Roweromaniak
mixed his participation with his personal action to save monuments which slowly dissapear due to lack of good ownership/care, so his pictures are no so beautufill, but showing monuments which are usually not photographed...

What are our goals: As many pictures as possible or maybe to get new users, especially as permanently wikipedia-Users?
Since today, it is - even with a bunch of new users - mostly an inside job. It needs much more effort, to get new permanent authors. And I see great differences in the participating countries.
e.g. if we can´t make the upload procedure even more userfriendly, we will stay in a status of self fertilization.
The result in Austria is sufficient and in the first sight, we are satisfied. But beside the numeric result, we have to recognice our hidden faults. If we look really closely and critically, we can analyse this deficits.
For me and most of the austrian Editors from the cultural heritage-table-project, the contest is just a visible peak of a long time effort, while the major area still remaines in the article-work.
But anyway, for me, the most important result with WLM was the experience of this international cooperation.
