Hi,
I'm from the Catalan project, and recently we have been developing lists of monuments (partially by bot, partially by hand). Some of them include coordinates, which would allow us to create maps of monuments They would useful for photographers. But I wonder how to create them. I've got different approaches in my mind, for example:
1. Creating a list of monuments with coordinates for Google Maps, even though I don't know if it's possible. Maybe it could also work with Google Earth. 2. The other way is creating maps with OpenStreetMap and, with a program, add the different locations. You can see an example at http://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usuari:Joancreus/Location_maps. Unfortunately, this would require thousands of maps to achieve a decent quality, and, depending on the number, many labels couldn't be read.
Help would be appreciated from people who worked with the project last year, in the Netherlands, or have other ideas.
Thanks a lot,
Joan.
I have created a template with a link to Google Maps that shows all coordinates via toolserver. See http://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Llista_de_monuments_del_Barcelon%C3%A8s and click on "mapa".
It would be great if that could be done with OpenStreetMap and with an inline map.

Hi, On french wikipédia we've got a template called KML which creates links to OSM, Google maps, Bing maps and allows user to download coordinates of the page in a KML file. The template is located there : http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mod%C3%A8le:KML .
You can see an exemple in action at the end of this article : http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_des_monuments_historiques_de_Bordeaux#Lie...
hope this helps.

Wow, it seems great! I wonder if it could be adapted and, in the description, show the ID number or other relevant data for photographers.

Fine, Maarten. We will unify all data with decimal notation.
We are using a family of templates with some different fields from different sources. Will it be helpfull to unify them in a more complex template? They are at http://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Categoria:Plantilles_de_formataci%C3%B3_de_taul... named Plantilla:Filera XX

Separate templates are probably easier. Let's see if I get this - BC Sard - Monuments of Sardinia, can't find the ISO code for Sardinia, does anyone happen to know it? - BIC - Monuments in Spain, so the table name will be monuments_es_(ca) - BIC Val - Monuments in Valencia, so the table name will be monuments_es-vc. If some other Wikipedia adds them too then I'll append (ca) - BCIN - Monuments in Catalonia, so the table name will be monuments_es-ct. If some other Wikipedia adds them too then I'll append (ca)

ISO code for Sardinia is IT-88 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-2:IT), so the coordinates have region:IT-88

I set up harvesting for 5 new sources: - monuments_ad_(ca) - Andorra - monuments_es-ct_(ca) - Catalunya - monuments_es_(ca) - Spain - monuments_fr_(ca) - France - monuments_it-88_(ca) - Sardinia
I haven't done Valencia yet, http://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantilla:Filera_BIC_Val still needs to be converted. Please poke me when I can add it.
The sources are aggregated in the big table. You can see a (Google Earth) preview at http://toolserver.org/~erfgoed/monuments_test/.
Someone else got a country I can add? ;-)

- monuments_ad_(ca) - Andorra
- monuments_es-ct_(ca) - Catalunya
- monuments_es_(ca) - Spain
- monuments_fr_(ca) - France
- monuments_it-88_(ca) - Sardinia
I haven't done Valencia yet, http://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantilla:Filera_BIC_Val still needs to be converted. Please poke me when I can add it.
The sources are aggregated in the big table. You can see a (Google Earth) preview at http://toolserver.org/~erfgoed/monuments_test/.
Someone else got a country I can add? ;-)

Right, Maarten.
ISO code for Sardinia is IT-88 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-2:IT), so the coordinates have region:IT-88
We have also the templates "Filera BIC And" for Andorra (code ad) and "Filera MH" for France.

Fine, Maarten. We will unify all data with decimal notation.
Great! That makes it a lot easier for me to add it to the database.
Let's see if I get this
- BC Sard - Monuments of Sardinia, can't find the ISO code for Sardinia, does anyone happen to know it?
- BIC - Monuments in Spain, so the table name will be monuments_es_(ca)
- BIC Val - Monuments in Valencia, so the table name will be monuments_es-vc. If some other Wikipedia adds them too then I'll append (ca)
- BCIN - Monuments in Catalonia, so the table name will be monuments_es-ct. If some other Wikipedia adds them too then I'll append (ca)

Some pointers: http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikilovesmonuments/2011-January/000011.... and http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/toolserver-l/2011-February/003889.html
I found your lists of monuments at http://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Categoria:Llistes_de_monuments and the template at http://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantilla:Filera_BC_Sard
Looks good, just one thing now: Could you please use decimal notation for the latitude and longitude?
Maarten
Thanks a lot,
Joan.

Great!
I missed Valencia. Now it is converted but there are no coordinates yet.
We use two fields for names: "nom" includes footnotes, icons, piped links or alternative names; "nomcoor" is intended for title parameter on GeoHack coordinates. It is better the second one as it is more descriptive.
Field "lloc" (location) includes municipality and adress separated by a line break tag shown at the database names. We will split it in two fields: "municipi" (new field) and "lloc" (only adresses or directions). I think this way will be more helpfull for everybody.
Finally, it is not necessary to construct the point tag with "name comma location". It results often redundant, like "Església de Sant Joan de Vilatorrada, Sant Joan de Vilatorrada", and in Spanish style brackets are used instead of comma. We will add the location on "nomcoor" field when necessary, so this will be the only field for naming the point tag.

Hi guys,
I set up harvesting for 5 new sources:
- monuments_ad_(ca) - Andorra
- monuments_es-ct_(ca) - Catalunya
- monuments_es_(ca) - Spain
- monuments_fr_(ca) - France
- monuments_it-88_(ca) - Sardinia

Ok. Just added Valencia.

Ok, I changed everything to nomcoor.

Ok, lloc now maps too address and municipi to municipality.

"name comma location"? O, you're talking about my hacked up tool at http://toolserver.org/~erfgoed/monuments_test/ ? This is really a proof of concept and should be replaced with a real tool.

Maarten, I was talking about the proof tool. Later I saw that the final tool of last year was more complete. Really great.
