Hi!
I was wondering if there are any plans to implement autotagging of location/coordinates when uploading using the upload wizard.
For example: When you punch in the monument ID it could fill in coordinates and possibly some extra information using information gathered by the bot.

That's an interesting proposal and if it is not possible to do it right now, it should be possible to add that feature to the Upload Wizard, but there's a catch: what are the coordinates of this photo?[0] Do you want to know the coordinates of the photographer or the coordinates of the monument? I'd prefer to preserve the coordinates of the photographer - I can even visualize how we could use that to generate a map of nice spots to take pictures from a monument. One way to do this is to let geo-tagged photos to override the auto-filled setting, which is a bit more complicated.

That's already happening. If list templates contain lat/lon and the link to the upload wizard is properly configured, than the lat/lon will be added. You can pass anything you want to the upload wizard: id, name, filename, lat, lon, categories, did I forget anything?

Coordinates passed from lists are included in template {{location dec}}, that indicates the camera location, instead of {{object location dec}}. For regular UW it makes more sense the camera location, but probably most coordinates of WLM photos are object location filled via upload link provided on lists.

Hi Maarten,
I am not sure whether this works for Russian uploads but if yes I would strongly suggest to disable this feature: The coordinates found in the "lists" on the Russian Wikipedia are not the coordinates of the monuments, but the coordinates of centers of some towns (sometimes not connected to the monument in any way).
Cheers Yaroslav

In France, it's always the center of the « monument » (could be a building or something else, definition of « monument » could be strange in strange ; in the cases we didn't find the precise location, there is no coordinates).
+1 : {{object location dec}} would be far better than {{location dec}}.

I assume this is how most countries operate, at least from my experience. The problem with Russia is that the database contains no coordinates. Instead of opting for keeping them blank and add manually where available (for example, from Wikipedia articles or existing tagged photos or manually) they organized it by the nearest big city. For example, for France it would mean that all monuments to which Montpellier is closer than any other center of a department would get identical coordinates corresponding to the center of Montpellier. Whereas it arguably helps to make a map of monuments, it is definitely counterproductive when these coordinates start to get to the images.

There is no coordinates in the french official database. It was all geolocate manually on Wikipedia (but we have some tools to help ; plus it's probably easier in French since the municipalities are small). We decided not to put « approximate » coordinates because it's not possible to distinguish after if the coordinate are approximate or not…

My suggestion for Russia was to geolocate manually (and I was ready to help), but the organizers did not want to listen.

To find manually the coordinates of a building I recommend the front door. It has the avantage that a GPS navigation device drives you to the right place and not to the back street. Alternatively, the most prominent point of the monument or just the center.
