Greetings Wiki Loves Monuments Community,
The final release of the WLM Android App has been published on the Google Play store!
We've made many improvements in the user interface and added some functional enhancements in the past week (and more are coming). Now is the time to download the app from Google Play and tell us if there are any issues before the contest starts in earnest.
The main known issues have to do with data in the monument database and country-specific campaign configuration, which affect the way monuments can be found in some countries. We are happy to work with the country organizers on improving these issues, within the realm of what is possible.
Here is the link to the app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.wikipedia.wlm
This version uploads photos to Commons, so it is a good idea to upload photos of real monuments.
Please write to us with any comments and give us a chance to make any last-minute fixes. We will update the release as fixes are made.
Thank you for your cooperation and support, and let's make 2012 the best year ever!
Best regards,
The WMF Mobile Team
To all that have in the past contributed to translation for the WLM Mobile app: Please update your translations. NOW. DO NOT WAIT!
https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Special:Translate/out-wlm-mobile
Translation is currently only complete in German, French, Dutch, Macedonian and Spanish. All other languages have at least 13 untranslated out outdated strings.
@phil: I'm very unhappy with the major UI language overhaul and additions that were done last minute. This has left translators no time to localise the app and provide fully localised user experience. But hey, at least in the US people can use it, right?!*

* This is pissing me offtime and again. Too many people really fail to understand what localisation requires in our movement's ecosystem.

Sorry about that, Siebrand. We’ve been squeezing lots of work into very short sprints and your help is most appreciated.
The Translatewiki ecosystem is amazing and it is astonishing that translations can be done so quickly. I do understand the normal lead time is two weeks, as opposed to two months, but most of the recent UI changes were not anticipated even two weeks ago.
A big thanks to the translation community for jumping on this tight deadline!

Due to time constraints, and the relative popularity of Android in many of the participating countries, we focused on Android first.
The underlying app framework makes it easy to develop an iPhone version, but we shall see.

Hi,
1. Any way to change the UI language in the app? many android cellphone in Israel support Hebrew, but don't have the option to select Hebrew as local language (like my galaxy s3).
2. Why the app doesn't show more information about the monuments - specially the description text or link to the article?

I am not one of the devs but I think the answer is because there was not so much time for feature requests, I suppose... the schedule was extremely tight but there are lot of ideas in the air. You can add yours here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_mobile_application/Feedba...

Hi Itzik, thanks Cristian,
1. We are dependent on the phone's language setting. I do realize that phones in some countries do not support the local language, which is a sad state of affairs.
2. We are dependent on the data available in the monuments database and in some cases there is no link to a Wikipedia article. In other cases, there is a link to an article that doesn't exist, which we render as a redlink. We want to enhance this further to search for articles on Wikipedia when no link is available, but there wasn't time. In regards to description text, we have seen some text added to monument names in some countries, otherwise there is no description.

Maybe we can give an option via the app settings or at first opening of the app to select the language?

Really? I thought many of monuments have short text as description... In any case, we can't show the text when he is available?
