Hello everyone!
I've been working on making Campaign pages more useful over the last few days. Details about the system are at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Yuvipanda/Campaigns_namespace_proposal, but even better - you can see a live demo!
http://blue-dragon.wmflabs.org/wiki/Campaign:show-off-campaigns
The idea being that you can pass on links to the Campaign page itself and people can upload from there. They can also see a description, and other images that have been uploaded (it currently shows the last 50 images). This is far more useful than the current version, http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Campaign:wlm-nl, which is just a JSON structure.
Suggestions / Comments for improving the feature are welcome! While initially I expected this to take longer to finish, things moved much faster than expected and the patch is very close to being merged now! I'll try to get this deployed next week.
Thanks!
Hello Yuvi,
As I requested on IRC: please disable the patch, it is breaking a good organized Wiki Loves Monuments.
As I explained to you on IRC, you are now proposing to re-create the problems we had last year with campaigns. The whole purpose of the new campaigns is to be able to track changes done in the campaigns, as last year we could each time restore the campaigns, also too many users can edit the technical part of campaigns so we have now one person in charge of the campaigns, creating and maintaining them for the national teams, and we certainly do not want people to visit these technical pages. It are highly sensitive pages and there is no further protection possible.
Already in the past weeks several campaigns were changed the wrong way and had to be restored, we do not want to repeat the situation of 2012 again.
I filled a bug to prevent this idea to be executed: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53570
We will do everything to disable this system on these crucial and critical technical pages.
Please enable this somewhere else, but not on these technical pages which are solely used for maintenance.
Romaine

Very welcoming, Romaine :) I'm sure my work is well appreciated. Also who is 'we'?
I have explained the problem + added sources of reports and more.
Nobody has said that your work is not appreciated. In fact I think everyone appreciate your work, including me. We are very happy that you have created the new system of upload campaigns. But that doesn't mean you can't make mistakes, and it doesn't mean everything is fully thought through. If I make a mistake I can't hide behind all the other work that went well. I am very much disappointed in your reaction. You do not take the problems seriously.
Also you point to your documentation, but in your documentation I haven't read about this new idea you came up with, only perhaps between the lines which are very easy interpreted differently. And as I said before, the idea is fine, the location to put it is worse.
I protest now as I have seen the problems we had in 2012 and 2011, and we do not want to happen again (as that is not solved).

The problem as I understand you are saying this will cause is...
1. Campaign pages will become popular 2. *Admins* will come, hit edit, and mess up the pages 3. It will be too hard to use any one of: 1. AbuseFilter 2. Editnotice 3. Watchlist/revert/trout 4. Full protection, to prevent it.
Am I misunderstanding?
1. Why do you ignore the problems of last year? Where have you discussed this implementation? Why does the technical upload campaign page becomes invisible? This is not working! 2. Are you volunteering to clean up the mess? 3. There is no need for anything if this tool isn't implemented on those pages. 4. Pages are already protected, still admins can edit. Please read what I say instead of ignoring it.
And why will the technical page be hidden? In that way it is impossible for us to maintain them easy.
Yes you are misunderstanding.

PS: The title of the topic should be changed in "Less useful campaign pages coming soon!" I have seen your test page and that makes the campaign pages less useful as it becomes harder to maintain them.

I've said what I had to say here and on bugzilla. Will disengage again unless something that is an actual problem comes up.
Technical update: The patch hit a snag - since we'll be exposing them to anonymous users, it'll have to deal with HTTP caches properly. I'm investigating ways to do this right, but still expect to get this merged next week.
Given the raised concerns and proximity of WLM, I would delay it. We already have tools for presenting the campaign uploads.
