Maarten and all,
I've done already the most part for the statistics. I'll have to recall how to get in to the toolserver to merge it into the API, but here is a preview (based on an old DB dump):
http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/tools/stats-eu/index.php
Here is a graph example:
http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/tools/stats-eu/index.php?format=graph&a...
Here is a table example:
http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/tools/stats-eu/index.php?format=table&a...
Not sure what else would be usefull, though.
I've added a new option: 'groupby', values: country or item.
Grouping by country may be more interesting for countries in particular.
Example:
http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/tools/stats-eu/index.php?format=graph&a...
PS: By the way, graph for 'pt' looks pretty ugly, we really should update our database :P
Has there been any update for this?
For NL we have the followonig statisticspage:
http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikiproject/Erfgoed/Nederlandse_Erfgo...
That is done outsite the database at the moment by somebody else, but of course all data is in the database.
Can something like this already be generated via the Api? I have a request from Romaine if this can be done for BE as well, and it is probably of intrest to all countries?
Regards,
Andre

Andre,
We can easily report on the fields that are mapped against 'monuments_all' table, other combinations would be too weird to allow (although that's possible as well).
What are you trying to achieve, in the end? Just dumping all fields status?

Hi Nuno,
Per 'municiple', or whatever distinction there is in a country we want at least to know the number of monuments there, and the numbers of pictures taken (which lead to how much to do). The others can be intresting as well, like 'number of coordinates'. That way people can deal with the lists in a structured manner dealing with these things, and, most important for WLM, decide were still a lot of pictures are needed, so go there to take pictures.

Andre

We have that also, at the bottom of the page: http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/tools/stats/
I believe a map for Europe (never seen google charts for Europe divided by municipality, though) could be refreshed, say, daily and automatically.
Andre, the data is (or really should be) at the unified database (monuments_all), and that's what I've been using - it's just not updated, as I'm waiting for some database fixes from Maarten.
However I have this strange impression that I'm missing something. Is it the tables you're interested in? I can manage to generate them (dinamically) the next few days.
Nuno, That chart (my portuguese is bad, but I assume it shows percentage of pictures to monuments) is also very interesting for the purposes of the competition, but I was looking for something much less dynamic - just the number of monuments per municipality in a chart which I suppose would show lots of monuments near historic cities and nothing in the mountain ranges. I guess at the stage we are going though, that may be difficult to create if we are still working so hard on getting those lists into the database.
I also never thought about a map of Europe by municipality before, but theoretically this should already be on Wikipedia in some form or other, it seems to me.

That way people can deal with the lists in a structured manner dealing with these things, and, most important for WLM, decide were still a lot of pictures are needed, so go there to take pictures. Yes, I am intrested in just the tables. Just like the page I started with:

Andre,
I understand different things between your e-mail in 19-08-2011 08:44 and 19-08-2011 20:51.
Let's see if I can explain:
The table you pointed (in the first) is specific to NL. Each country' table has only some fields mapped to a "global table" (monuments_all). For those fields, the tool I've shown already does what you want.
For other fields (like architect), that would need to be addressed on individual basis, which is too overwhelming (there are 22 different tables, I suppose each one with more or less fields, with different names for each one, etc.).
That's why the table you see at: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Monument... ... only shows some fields (the ones that are common and mapped to monuments_all).
For this table, you can get it with the tool I mentioned (URL probably spanned in multiple lines):
http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/tools/stats-eu/index.php?format=table &item[]=name&item[]=name_pct&item[]=address&item[]=address_pct&item[]=municipality&item[]=municipality_pct&item[]=coordinates&item[]=coordinates_pct&item[]=image&item[]=image_pct&width=1000&height=700&filter[]=ad&filter[]=be-vlg&filter[]=ch&filter[]=es&filter[]=es-ct&filter[]=es-vc&filter[]=fr&filter[]=ie&filter[]=it-88&filter[]=nl&filter[]=pt
(There are only some countries because, as I said before, my database is pretty old).
Now, back to Jane:
«I was looking for something much less dynamic - just the number of monuments per municipality in a chart which I suppose would show lots of monuments near historic cities and nothing in the mountain ranges»
What we can do is breakdown by a field, like municipality. Then you could generate a table with all municipalities (of selected countries) and request non "_pct" (per-cent) fields. In your example, you would request only the totals, like this, but breaking down each country by its municipalities:
http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/tools/stats-eu/index.php?format=table&a...
Is that it?
Also note that the statistics are independent from the loading of the databases (each country has their own staff working on that) - if there is data on the database, it will just show automatically.

Hi Nuno,
This table is only showing countries. What I want is to see for a given country, the numbers per municipal.

For other fields (like architect), that would need to be addressed on individual basis, which is too overwhelming (there are 22 different tables, I suppose each one with more or less fields, with different names for each one, etc.).
That's why the table you see at: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Monument... ... only shows some fields (the ones that are common and mapped to monuments_all).
For this table, you can get it with the tool I mentioned (URL probably spanned in multiple lines):
http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/tools/stats-eu/index.php?format=table &item[]=name&item[]=name_pct&item[]=address&item[]=address_pct&item[]=municipality&item[]=municipality_pct&item[]=coordinates&item[]=coordinates_pct&item[]=image&item[]=image_pct&width=1000&height=700&filter[]=ad&filter[]=be-vlg&filter[]=ch&filter[]=es&filter[]=es-ct&filter[]=es-vc&filter[]=fr&filter[]=ie&filter[]=it-88&filter[]=nl&filter[]=pt
(There are only some countries because, as I said before, my database is pretty old).
Hi Nuno,
This table is only showing countries. What I want is to see for a given country, the numbers per municipal.
Regards,
Andre
Now, back to Jane:
?I was looking for something much less dynamic - just the number of monuments per municipality in a chart which I suppose would show lots of monuments near historic cities and nothing in the mountain ranges?
What we can do is breakdown by a field, like municipality. Then you could generate a table with all municipalities (of selected countries) and request non "_pct" (per-cent) fields. In your example, you would request only the totals, like this, but breaking down each country by its municipalities:
http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/tools/stats-eu/index.php?format=table&a...
Is that it?
Also note that the statistics are independent from the loading of the databases (each country has their own staff working on that) - if there is data on the database, it will just show automatically.

Hi Nuno, Per 'municiple', or whatever distinction there is in a country we want at least to know the number of monuments there, and the numbers of pictures taken (which lead to how much to do). The others can be intresting as well, like 'number of coordinates'. That way people can deal with the lists in a structured manner dealing with these things, and, most important for WLM, decide were still a lot of pictures are needed, so go there to take pictures. Yes, it is. It will be simple to breakdown by municipality for the fields mapped to monuments_all - I just hadn't the time yet.
The others will be more difficult, and won't be ready in time, if it depends on me.
Since you are compiling (a part of?) the database, could you please give a hand to Maarten to fix the current database? Let me know if I can help.

The fields in monuments_all will be enough. Most important ones are the number of monuments, and the number of pictures.
All the others is at most a 'nice to have' and certainly not important for the competition, only usefull for volunteers who try to complete the lists on wikipedia.

Andre,
You can get the tables like this, following the earlier concepts:
http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/tools/stats-eu/index2.php?format=table&...
(url probably wrapped)
Considerations:
* format=graph - I don't think it's useful for this purpose so it's currently buggy and it will probably keep that way;
* This is index2.php because some things are hardcoded for simplicity. Maybe I'll merge it to index.php later, but just maybe...
Hope it helps,
Hey again,
Didn't I say I love statistics? :-)
You can now have your "heat" list adding the option "color=heatpct":
http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/tools/stats-eu/index2.php?format=table&...
Dear spanish fellows:
I've notice some quality problems in the municipality names of the objects on es/es-ct/es-vc lists. Sometimes they are like this, others "like this" and also "like this". In my opinion, this is half-way for problems in managing the lists.
http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/tools/stats-eu/index2.php?format=table&...
It's pretty easy to clean that up, but I'm still not sure if Maarten is loading the database from wiki lists (thus overriding any fixes we perform). Get in touch with me if you need help.
PS: I don't have much opportunities to hang around IRC, but feel free to ping me in Skype.
PS2: Andorra and France seem to suffer the same symptoms.

Of course I'm getting it from the wiki lists. :-) The basis is at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Structur... The overview of the database is at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Monument... The source is at https://svn.toolserver.org/svnroot/p_erfgoed/erfgoedbot/
On the input side I could really need some help with: * Adding more sources to the database * Tweaking the current sources * Adding some converters (for example for different coordinates format)
On the output side I really need help: * Need some clean up functions to be implemented * Option to filter on with or without images * KML output needs to be prettified * (more)
I'm updating the database now. I'm afraid the weekly run failed because of some toolserver SQL issues. I will schedule it to run every day now. Did you add the coordinates for Portugal Nuno?
Maarten
Hi Maarten, I will add the coordinates in the wikilists for Portugal today based on the work we have been doing in the database at www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt.

Of course I'm getting it from the wiki lists. :-) The basis is at
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Structur... The overview of the database is at
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Monument... The source is at https://svn.toolserver.org/svnroot/p_erfgoed/erfgoedbot/
On the input side I could really need some help with:
- Adding more sources to the database
- Tweaking the current sources
- Adding some converters (for example for different coordinates format)
On the output side I really need help:
- Need some clean up functions to be implemented
- Option to filter on with or without images
- KML output needs to be prettified

I'm updating the database now. I'm afraid the weekly run failed because of some toolserver SQL issues. I will schedule it to run every day now. Did you add the coordinates for Portugal Nuno?

*Sigh* Should you have used PERL, I could expand the tool considerably. It would take me ages to do it in Python...
What I was about to propose would be something like this flow: 1. grab your database dump 2. use data quality tools to apply corrections (it's far easier for me) 3. stuff into our tools/plist/ to be able to export them into wiki format 4. paste the exported to the wikipedia lists
And then your bot would grab everything fine, I hope.

We are in the process of copying the database into the wiki lists (step 4 above), so you should grab them in the following days.
Anyway, I just converted our table to monuments_all (you probably noticed in the last index2.php listing), I can do it for monuments_pt as well if you want an updated version quickly, as this process will take some time to finish...

Maarten,
I performed some [reusable] fixes on the dump which are visible at the tool - along with a lazy character encoding problem that I should fix should this approach advance.
However only Vicenç Riullop replied and he seems to lack technical ability [that was my understanding], he was trying to gather more tech people into this. I can't carry on this by myself as we're getting busier for the WLM kickoff.
In the meantime, is there any method in the API to export sublists in Wiki format? Or maybe converting to CSV to use a tool I saw somewhere...?

Would be nice if someone could implement that. If you take a look at https://svn.toolserver.org/svnroot/p_erfgoed/api/includes/ you see we already support different output formats. Output format "csv" and "wikitext" should be implemented. I'm really short on time (running both the European and the Dutch project) so I don't think I can implement it. Can someone else please do this?

A list may include different municipalities so links, disambiguations and sorting keys are included in the municipality field. Morever, some large monuments may be in the border of two municipalities. Any suggestion how to handdle this?

Dear Vicenç [I believe all others should ignore this message],
Yes, I've just noticed, e.g., "Ogassa i Ribes de Freser". My (professional) opinion is that this is a huge mistake, since that field represents 2 values, which is a clear violation of standard database rules. Having this in mind, I'd suggest splitting the object in two.
I found a pattern for "multiple municipalities in the same object", which seems to be "]] i [[", and there seems to be only 6 of them. You can just wipe out one of them from the field, or manually duplicate the record them for splitting - the latter being more complex, think of a good ID disambiguation though. Regarding link disambiguations, you can just add a column for that - in a "working table", as they are of no use for a listing like this (alas, that kind of data is only relevant if you plan to regenerate the lists).
We had similar problems - we even had descriptions names in wiki syntax already, our lists date back to 2006. As I wanted to preserve the links and original "names" (designations), I've done some transformations on the data before it gets on the list - this kind of approach was actually the reason to have our tools/plist [1] - notice multiple links near the end of each description, and notice that, if you export to wiki format, you'll find municipalities disambiguated as well.
[1] http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/tools/plist/?region=Braga
That's why you currently can "regenerate" the lists with their original descriptions and links.
This is, however, a more complex approach which I won't have time to assist you, but I may point you directions if you know ETL.
Found another pattern "]], [[", they still just a few.
Ok, thanks, I think I've got it. It will be better to clean the municipality field moving any comment or multiple municipalities to another field more suitable for notes. The pipped links and sorting keys can be generated with an auxiliary template-table that can be useful also for uniformity in other types of lists.
Obtaining the source has been a PITA, so regeneration is not an issue. We will think later how to check for updates.

Great, if you remove ETL from the way, the task is pretty simple: * Get a CSV dump of your table(s). * Use google refine to draw rules for cleaning up the data - I can provide you some, based on my very old database dump, and we might work that out together through Skype. * Reload the table(s) with the exported (fixed) CSV.
It's pretty easy!
The great thing about it is that you get a record of "cleaning actions", which you can replay later - e.g., if you get a more updated database dump which didn't get cleaned up.
I'll try to check some municipalitys with that names, but I have a question, why are repeated some municipalities?. Search Mazaleón in your result page, by example, it appears with name Mazaleón and with name Mazaleón, and it's only in one list...

overriding any

Hi Romaine,
The stats comes from the database that Maarten made, I dived a bit into this, and in the table from As I see 2 duplicate id's. (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lijst_van_onroerend_erfgoed_in_As)
As the id is the unique key, only the last one will make it in the database.

A question, we have reviewed the list of duplicates in spanish lists and we have found links to monuments with ID code that starts with RI-55 and RI-53, but the items acceptable in the spanish contest are only the monuments that starts with ID code RI-51. I think that the bot is reading only monuments with ID code starting with RI-51.
Could you make a new list that gives us only the duplicates in monuments that starts with ID code RI-51?.

Looks awesome! Would be great if you could integrate it with the api code like http://toolserver.org/~erfgoed/api/api.php?action=search&format=html&... We already defined an action "statistics". That's the one you can use :-) We probably want to add a css sortable thing to both lists so you can easily sort, see for example http://translatewiki.net/wiki/User:Multichill/stats
Maarten
Ps. Source of api is at https://svn.toolserver.org/svnroot/p_erfgoed/api/
Yes that's in my TODO list (still), but I'll have to dig up my toolserver credencials.
Nuno, That is excellent work and will be extremely helpful during the competition I think.

Andre,
You can get the tables like this, following the earlier concepts:
http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/tools/stats-eu/index2.php?format=table&...
(url probably wrapped)
Considerations:
- format=graph - I don't think it's useful for this purpose so it's
currently buggy and it will probably keep that way;
- This is index2.php because some things are hardcoded for simplicity.
Maybe I'll merge it to index.php later, but just maybe...
Hope it helps,
Wiki Loves Monuments mailing list WikiLovesMonuments@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikilovesmonuments http://www.wikilovesmonuments.eu
Thanks Jane. I forgot to mention that if you change format to csv, you can get a CSV file which you can import into Excel and alike, maybe someone wants to experiment...
Best,
Dear all,
I finally ported the statistics to the API, which means you will be able to have the most up-to-date statistics as the contest moves along.
Here is an example:

That looks awesome! Thanks for merging this with the api :-D
