Hey all, I have been wondering for some time about a tool which could be used for adding geographic coordinates to the list of monuments in a country.
Some users on the Polish Wikipedia have already started adding coordinates to monuments located near their locations (example: http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedysta:Tommy_Jantarek/Zabytki_wielkopolski). Answering their question about what tool should be used, I told them to use the famous GeoLocator http://tools.freeside.sk/geolocator/geolocator.html which has been used both on the Polish Wikipedia as well as on the Commons.
What tool do you use? Are there any other, better suitable tools to be used?
Another question is about the possibility of having a pan-European sponsorship or patronage from a European (not only from the European Union) organisation or institution.
It has been suggested to me that we may try getting sponsorship or patronage from Europeana http://www.europeana.eu/portal/ and today I have been leaked that indeed we have gained sponsorship from that organisation; however I can't find any information about that in the archives, so that's maybe a behind-the-scenes activity? Any upcoming press releases of which I haven't been told? :-)
Regards, - -- Tomasz Kozłowski | [[user:odder]]
Hi Tomasz,
great that you're improving on the lists.
I know nothing about formal negotiations or any financial cooperation currently with Europeana, so I am afraid that this would be a rumour.
With kind regards,
Lodewijk

Seems to be my fault, but as I remember, one of the reason why we decided to do the project in EU countries only was a kind of cooperation with Europeana...
Ah, that might be an understandable reason for confusion. The European heritage institutions around monuments are especially cooperating in organizations like Europeana, so we could use those cooperations to put local organizers in contact with the local heritage institutions through our contacts with Dutch heritage institutions or/in Europeana :)
I hope that clarifies, sorry for the confusion,
Lodewijk

Tomasz, The tool I have been using is this one: http://www.gpscoordinaten.nl/bepaal-gps-coordinaten.php You will need google translate on to use it, but it seems to work quite fast for me. And here is a link to Unesco monuments with geocoordinates: http://whc.unesco.org/en/254 http://whc.unesco.org/en/254Wow, your list is long! You may want to split those up into a list hierarchy if you have time - during our competition it was quite slow to make modifications to such long lists.
Nice work! Jane

I guess the most used on dawiki is http://www.findvej.dk/wikipedia - it works best with locations in Denmark, but adapting the created link is rather easy.

I am currently working on improving this one. My current version will do any changes you do directly to the generated template, so you don't need to click the coordinate again, and with help of Dispenser, the maintainer of the geohack tools, it can select the region automatically. I will move this version shortly to multichill's version.
If we should support other templates for other wiki's, I can look into that as well. For the auto-edit tools to work, some javascript should be installed on that wiki, but then I can add it to the list.
I am thinking of moving this to a project account on the toolserver, so if others are willing to help with this, let me know.

Wikimapia has some buildings geolacated. Not a solution, but it may help in some cases.
A problem we have encountered is that local administrations in Spain are using coordinates in UTM ED50 format. We use a spreadsheet to convert them into GPS format, but it is not precise enough for landmarks. Geohack does not have UTM ED50 format.

We had the same problem for the Portuguese coordinates that were in IGeoE Hayford Gauss format, a national format, but I used ArcGIS to transform the coordinates, which seems to be accurate. If anybody else needs to convert coordinates, just send them to me (preferably in DBase IV format, but Excel is also ok) and I will return them in WGS84 format.
By the way, check http://wlm.wikimedia.pt/monumentos.php for our monuments map.

I think we should think about developing all tools with a separate language file, so translation can be ran in paralell.
Mine have been using a "label" for strings and a _T() function to fetch the translated string. Something like mediawiki.
Not sure how much could be reused between different tools.
Regarding to translatioms, I have recently been creating a multilingual IRC bot; i've found the best way of translating strings in python consists on saving files with python dictionaries (arrays with strings instead of integers) inside (then parsed using eval() ). The structure I've used is the following.
{ 'notfound': {'ca': u'No s'ha trobat la cadena de text', 'es': u'No se ha encontrado la cadena de texto', 'en': u'Couldn't find the string' } }
Maybe a similar approach could be taken with PHP, even though I have no idea.
By the way, see http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Toolsfor tooling.
Hope this helps,
Joan.

Joan, just my opinion about that: the drawback of it is having to load (in memory) multiple strings that will not be used anytime - if you set your language to PT, you are still loading the strings to ES,CA, etc.. I'd go for something like:
require_once($lang.'inc.php');
With appropriate security wrapping, obviously. This will load only one set of strings (the language set in $lang).
More, if you send the whole string file to translate to both PT and ES, it might to turn in difficulties when you'll merge the translations.. usually it's best to deliver PT-only to PT people, ES-only to ES people, etc etc and so on.

Joan, just my opinion about that: the drawback of it is having to load (in memory) multiple strings that will not be used anytime - if you set your language to PT, you are still loading the strings to ES,CA, etc.. I'd go for something like:
require_once($lang.'inc.php');
Let's not reinvent the wheel again. At http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/trunk/extensions/WikimediaMessages... you can see how it's done in MediaWiki. I suggest we stick to that :-)

Maarten,
That's a good example of what I was proposing (although, for some reason, I think MW loads all strings anyway, not sure...).
Anyway, I was just trying to ask you (all) to be i18n-aware while you're developing tools from scratch, if there is someone (like me!). It will be far easier to do it also from scratch, than having to run all scripts to turn them i18n-ready.
Best,

Another question is about the possibility of having a pan-European sponsorship or patronage from a European (not only from the European Union) organisation or institution.
It has been suggested to me that we may try getting sponsorship or patronage from Europeana http://www.europeana.eu/portal/ and today I have been leaked that indeed we have gained sponsorship from that organisation; however I can't find any information about that in the archives, so that's maybe a behind-the-scenes activity? Any upcoming press releases of which I haven't been told? :-)

And what about European Cultural Foundation http://www.eurocult.org/? Are they potential supporters of WLM Europe?

I'm sorry for being a little behind on this project.
Do we have or do we need a clear definition of what "monunments" are? Apparently memorial stones, statues, and buildings. But only man-made things? Or also remarkable trees and cliffs? Should also entire gardens or cities be included in the lists?
Is the castle of Versailles one monument or a large system of many monuments? Is there a lower limit for how insignificant things can be included? Do we include individual milestones? (I'm referring to actual milestones, by the roadside.) Or is there some "notability" requirement?
Do we need a standard way to indicate types of monuments? Some sort of ontology or controlled vocabulary? Do heritage instutitions already have a classification that we can reuse? Are existing categories on Commons sufficient?
Should each monument have its own category on Commons? If it is a monument, I guess we can expect to get more than one photo of it. Is there a standard way to add geo coordinates and object type to categories on Commons?
By the way, Euroregions often have fonds for cross border activities with regard to cultural affairs. Maybe nice for WLM conventions in border regions. As far as I know the Euregion where I live in (EUREGIO Gronau) has problems to spend its money for those cultural activities including Germans and Dutch.
Kind regards Ziko
