Hello all, it has come to my attention (although I cannot find a mailing list thread about it /yet/) that it was suggested that we should have a Google Maps plugin for Wordpress displaying maps for a certain region (a country/province/county/even municipality), with data being loaded from our erfgoed database.
This being said, I have to admit that I am no good programmer, so I'd like to point you to an existing example of such a solution, which was developed last year by Nuno Tavares for use in the 2011 WLM in Portugal -- see http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/monumentos.php.
From the source code I can see that the maps are being loaded in a
frame (<iframe />) with the help of a PHP script; but taking all the technical details aside, this is a great tool with a wonderful potential to be used on the national sites of the participating countries.
So, my question here is: have you heard of such a plugin (it's always safe to ask, I presume :-)? If it doesn't exist yet, is there a volunteer here who might be willing to spend some time developing it? (I have no idea how hard it might be to create it.) What do you think about such a tool -- would you, as a national WLM organiser, use it on your website? Please let me know!
Thanks, Tomasz
We use it since last year, on this page: http://wikilovesmonuments.se/delta-i-tavlingen/hitta-monument/
I cannot really see the need to make it as a plugin since it works great anyway.
Hi Jan,
if it exists, it would probably help to simply add a piece of description on how to make this magic happen on the documentation page :) It is indeed always a combination of programming and documentation. I've seen several solutions over the years, and many times it broke halfway, so lets make sure there is one *good* solution well documented that will most likely survive the coming months :)
Best, Lodewijk

An easy way to use it, if you have a wiki template like GeoGroup [1]: 1) Click on link "Map of all coordinates from Google" provided by the template in a list [2] or a category [3] 2) Click on "link" button in Google Maps 3) Customize embedded map 3) Copy & paste HTML to embed in website
This way we have made, for example, the page http://www.wikilovesmonuments.cat/andorra/

Can this use OpenStreetMap instead of Google Maps?
Hi Andy:
Basically the same answer as last year: if anyone is willing to develop the same for OSM (or has developed it and wants to describe) it is all up to the local team to make the choice. We primarily want to make sure the option of showing a map is there.

Well if we generate too much trafic to the google maps they can block us anyway:
https://developers.google.com/maps/faq#usagelimits
or we should apply for google earth grant for non-profits:
