Hi,
A few days ago I've introduced direct upload links for all the monuments without an image in the monument list. The link worked ok, but I've noticed that the 3 biggest counties (by number of monuments) were not displayed completely anymore due to the page becoming larger than the maximum allowed article size [1]. I reverted the direct upload link, but the problem remained for Iași [2].
Since the problem is only going to get worse as the lists get more complete, I am now wondering what my options are: - ask the WMF for an increase in wgMaxArticleSize in ro.wp. Tempting, but even if this happens before September, >2MB pages will still be hard to load on older computers. - use a short URL service to shave some characters off the URL used for error reporting/image uploading. Might still hit the limit at some point - give up on the error reporting and/or direct image uploading (either in all the counties or just in the ones where we hit the size limit). This sounds like a hard price to pay, since we've received an impressive number of error reports and I'm sure the direct upload link will also be a success. - further split the county list into several smaller pages. As you can see, the list is already split into sections by letter, but putting the sections in different pages would mean between 20 and 30 links, which I believe could discourage people looking for a certain monument.
I am not sure which of these options to choose and I am hoping for some advice from you guys.
Thanks, Strainu

Hi Strainu, the Norwegian lists have been subdivided into municipalities, and for Oslo even into boroughs - http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategori:Lister_over_kulturminner_i_Oslo Can this be a solution for Romania as well?

On the dutch wiki we've made quite some splits in lists. But we haven't found the best way to split them on (with over 1000 monuments in one city), either by adress, zip code or monument ID. Amsterdam with 8000 monuments is our biggest pain in the ass, as are Brugge and Gent (both 10.000 monuments) in Flanders. the size limit is there for some reason, I recall the first time I created the Amsterdam list (the 2Mb limit wasn't there yet) with all 8000 monuments this resulted in a page which couldn't be loaded, and thus not easily deleted.

Hi noorse,
This could be a solution, but I worry about the implications for the potential uploaders. Did you see any difference in uploads in lists subdivided into municipalities vs lists fost bigger zones?
Thanks, Strainu
I didnt perceive it as a problem last year. Two wiki solutions that work quite well: 1. Navigation templates. See for example my home list https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Llista_de_monuments_del_Maresme It is a "comarca" with larger municipalities splited. A customazed TOC facilitates navigation within the "comarca" and a footer navigation template for other lists. 2. A search button at https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/P:WLM facilitates searching all lists with title prefixed "Llista de monuments..."

Thanks Vicenç, your example looks pretty interesting and easy to navigate. I also love the pictures you used for category and upload, they're much nicer than what I've seen elsewhere, I think I'll "steal" them. :)
It is still a variation from the official Romanian rules for organizing the list, but given they are absolutely crazy (2 monuments with successive ids and placed on the same parcel of land can end up far away in the list) and given that I've already used such an approach for Bucharest, I think I'll go with splitting the lists by "comună".
Strainu
As a rule of thumb I've limited the list to 250 raw monuments to avoid the limit of template transclusions, specially if you have 250 coordinates templates. For better rendering the page 200 is ok. In the list for Iasi there are 1518 monuments! It is impossible to add all coordinates, or any other function as a direct upload link. You should split the lists and add some navigation facility. For example, by "comuna" or any other intuitive subdivision.
