Hello all,
Please check the following message from Wikimedia Commons Android app team, regarding WLM integration into the app.
(I am forwarding, as Josephine was unable to post to the list.)

Hi all,
Just wanted to let you all know that we are planning to implement WLM integration into the Commons app (an Android app for users to upload photos to Commons) in the near future. :) Due to the current situation, we are unable to provide concrete estimates for when it will be completed, however I can say that September is unlikely, November might be possible, and in the worst case scenario it will certainly be done by 2021.
In the next month or two, I hope to be able to provide more details and a clearer timeline, and we will also start taking suggestions from organizers etc for desired features at that stage. I will post an update here as soon as possible.
We look forward to working with all of you to make WLM participation easier. :)
Best regards, Josephine / User:misaochan (Commons app project lead)

Hi Krishna,
which data is this based on and how will the campaign data be filled from the android app? As far as I'm aware, there's no automatism to prefill said data and it would be quite an additional burden on volunteers to have to sift through pictures uploaded via the app that are missing categories and descriptions that are otherwise prefilled.
If the source used is indeed Wikidata, at least in Austria that data hasn't been accurate ever since Wikimania Montreal.

Hi Krishna,
Wikimedia Commons app crashes a lot and it requires huge amount of patience to upload image there sometimes, that's why it is not suitable for the competition. Also, as Philip pointed out it does not prefill data.
As I requested earlier in the help desk, it would be better if WLM international team could invest resources to develop separate WLM focused app.

Hi Bodhisattwa,
Sorry to hear that the Commons app has been crashing for you. The average crash rate of our latest production version (v2.12) is 0.6% - we are working on improving that, of course, but it does mean that many users are experiencing relatively crash-free usage. If you could submit crash reports when it happens for you, we will look into it for our next release.
We are not funded by WLM but rather through a separate process, no WLM resources are being expended on this.
Best regards, Josephine

To add to this:
we're super excited that the commons app is building this campaign mode. Some of you may remember that there used to be a WLM dedicated app, and one lesson we learned from this experience is that it makes more sense to integrate it. This is for multiple reasons: - More critical mass to make development worth while - More reinforcement between the campaign and the regular uploads - People who are new to WLM, learn how to upload also outside the campaign: they can reuse the workflows. This helps them to remain active after.
Thanks Josephine & team for working on this!

- More reinforcement between the campaign and the regular uploads
+1, this is very important.
Indeed the management of data and workflows is probably going to be the hardest (and most valuable) part. Ideally you'd manage to abstract and reuse much of what is currently connected to the UploadWizard campaigns. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:UploadWizard/Campaigns
However that might mean that most of the work actually needs to happen outside the code of the app proper, so I'm very happy we're having this conversation to understand and determine the scope of the project.

For Indian monuments, we have almost completed migrating to Wikidata and hopefully by the start of the competition, we will finish it. However, cleaning-up the Wikidata data, linking them with Commons categories and images, and adding exact location will take some more time, considering the huge numbers of monuments we have. Anyway, at least for Indian monuments, we prefer to have the app pre-filled data from Wikidata, rather than the monument database.

Hi Philip,
Thanks for the feedback!
- Pre-filling the description and categories will be relatively trivial as we already do this in some situations (e.g. uploads from our "nearby places that need photos" map), and we do intend pre-filling to be part of the feature when we implement it. - The choice of data set is indeed a major concern. I had a brief discussion with Lodewijk and Stephen about this earlier, but the consensus was that we should discuss it with all of you (the national organizers). When we start the planning process in 1-2 months' time, I will probably create a page where everyone can provide their input on the suitability of various sources for their country.
Best regards, Josephine

As one of the beta testers of the Commons app, please let me know if there is any way I can help Josephine. Al of the data of the Dutch Rijksmonuments in Wikidata should be correct (thanks to Multichill).
We will not be joining WLM in 2020, but that does mean I have time free this upcoming fall to do some testing. :)

Hi Philip,
just to improve my understanding: what do you see as fundamentally different between using the app, and using any other upload method? The app developers are still working on integrating a campaign mode into the app, so there is some wiggle space in how to make that happen (although I don't want to speak for them, that is my best understanding). There would have to be at least the same amount of autofill information in the app as there is currently in the form, either straight from wikidata/monuments database or with a bot afterwards.
You do touch on a relevant issue: what data is most accurate to use. This is probably a question that lands differently from country to country. We may want to dig a bit deeper in general into how to improve this process. But that is beyond what we can expect from the app :)
Best, Lodewijk

which data is this based on and how will the campaign data be filled from the android app? As far as I'm aware, there's no automatism to prefill said data and it would be quite an additional burden on volunteers to have to sift through pictures uploaded via the app that are missing categories and descriptions that are otherwise prefilled.
If the source used is indeed Wikidata, at least in Austria that data hasn't been accurate ever since Wikimania Montreal.

Hi all,
Just wanted to let you all know that we are planning to implement WLM integration into the Commons app (an Android app for users to upload photos to Commons) in the near future.

Hi Lodewijk,
the current upload functionality (at least for Austrian monuments) includes the heritage ID, the short description / caption and the commonscat if one is available, otherwise the commonscat for heritage monuments of the municipality. When you look at https://www.wikidaheim.at/Q692625 for example, you'll see that the monuments have an already prefilled uploadlink that also includes the caption: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/special:uploadWizard?campaign=wlm-at&...
The caption/description is only available in Wikipedia lists via the ErfgoedBot and not necessarily Wikidata, so the best datasource for established heritage projects is probably said bot's database, as it regularly goes through the Wikipedia lists and those are kept up to date (contrary to Wikidata).

Hi Philip,
just to improve my understanding: what do you see as fundamentally different between using the app, and using any other upload method? The app developers are still working on integrating a campaign mode into the app, so there is some wiggle space in how to make that happen (although I don't want to speak for them, that is my best understanding). There would have to be at least the same amount of autofill information in the app as there is currently in the form, either straight from wikidata/monuments database or with a bot afterwards.
You do touch on a relevant issue: what data is most accurate to use. This is probably a question that lands differently from country to country. We may want to dig a bit deeper in general into how to improve this process. But that is beyond what we can expect from the app :)
Best, Lodewijk

Thanks for that clarification.
I agree that there are generally three datasources that can be used for this prefilling: the url (not applicable in the case of an app), wikidata and the monuments database (the latter is also used by erfgoedbot). I also agree that the best datasource to use, will probably depend on the country (in other countries the situation may be reverse). I think that the app should be able to use the monuments database - but I don't know if the developers give priority to wikidata or the monuments database.

Hi Lodewijk,
Wikidata would be the easiest for us as we already have Wikidata integration, however we are definitely open to using the monuments database if the community reaches a consensus that that is the best choice of data source. It should be fine for us to implement that as long as there is an accessible endpoint that we can use.
Best regards, Josephine

I consider the monuments database legacy. I wouldn't build new things on top of it. If countries want their monuments to be visible in the Commons app (and other places), they should invest time into migrating to Wikidata.

Hi,
Just for a supporting comment. WLM Finland has built our list on the top of the Wikidata so we prefer prefilled data from Wikidata.

I would like to strongly +1 what Maarten said, as current/ex co-maintainer of the monuments database.
We have tried our best so that the tools already built on top of the monuments database keep running ; but new things should not be built on it.
(While there is some support for harvesting Wikidata datasets into the monuments database, that was only ever meant to ease transition to Wikidata for folks highly dependent on legacy tooling (such as ErfgoedBot)).
Finally, there have been reports of the monuments DB harvesting behaving weirdly ; and neither André nor I have the capacity to look into it. In short, at the moment, I can offer little guarantee that the monuments DB would actually be up to date.
Cheers,
Hi Jean-Frédéric,
Thanks for the information, nice to hear from the maintainer! That is indeed a huge concern, and we should go with Wikidata in that case.

Hi all,
It sounds like an interesting opportunity to be able to use the app next year. Thank you for working on it Josephine and team!
Our team at Wikimedia Sverige would be able to support some of the local teams with the technical part of moving data to Wikidata until WLM 2021 (we could start working on it from early 2021).
As some of you know, our team worked on transferring a number of datasets to Wikidata in 2016–2017 as part of the Connected Open Heritage project https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Connected_Open_Heritage.[1] But many datasets obviously still remain (and new data and datasets have been added!) and we would need to work with people that know the datasets (and languages) to be able to continue the work.
If you are interested to work with us please drop my colleague Alicia Fagerving, in cc, an email (alicia.fagerving@wikimedia.se).
