Hi everyone,
Did anyone already make a tool to show all images of a certain monument? Monument database + https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/wiki/Category:Cultural_herita... + maybe some caching should make this pretty straightforward to implement. Would be nice to have it as part of the monuments api. Other tools could use this to dynamically show photos of a certain monument.

France has done something like this, although I don't know if it was manual labor or a program:

Obviously we need such a tool, but in the end I think we should aim at having categories for monuments with more than one image.
Cheers Yaroslav
Yes, next year that kind of information should co-exist in the database.
If you notice on our verification tool, we test if there is such a category so we can place it there instead. Otherwise it gets categorized in "Churches in district of xxxx", "district of xxxx" etc

I do not mean necessarily creating these categories in advance. What I mean is that if more than one photo of a monument X have been uploaded, it is an obvious candidate for creation of a category "Monument X". If we have say more than 5 pictures of a monument, and the category has not been yet created (do we have such cases?), the creation should be a high priority. If someone can compile the list of the monuments with 5 pictures and more without a separate category on Commons I volunteer to create the categories. I am not sure though whether it is easy to identify authomatically whether such category exists.

Well, we were lucky because those categories were already marked with an authority ID (which matches closely our WLM ID). I suggest you always create such categories with a correlation ID, so you can grab them back later.
You can also search for images using a specific template (which we also had) to determine the categories being used.

I am sorry, apparently I misunderstand smth.
Let me give an example.
I uploaded yesterday this file: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Middelburg_Lange_Noordstraat23.jpg
It is included in the categories on Commons which were automatically produced by the WLM template or by other templates present. All of them are hidden.
* Rijksmonumenten with known IDs * Media with locations * CC-BY-SA-3.0-NL * Self-published work * Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2011 * Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2011 in the Netherlands * Uploaded with UploadWizard
On top of that, when I was uploading the file, I added one more category: * Rijksmonumenten in Middelburg
(otherwise the file would be included in the default category Rijksmonumenten in the Netherlands). This category is not hidden and is included into a number of other categories, including Middelburg.
I know that the same monument has at least two other images, and I only know it because I uploaded them myself:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Middelburg_Lange_Noordstraat23_Right.... and http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Middelburg_Lange_Noordstraat23_Left.j...
In my opinion, this justifies the creation of the category smth like Lange Nordstraat 23, Middelburg (or Rijksmonument 29175, which is the same), which I will create in October, once the uploading rush is over.
However, I have no idea whether anybody else uploaded images of the same building, because they would need to land in the same category. (It could also have happened that these images do not even have a monument ID template, but this is a different story whatsoever).
The question in my prospective was whether we have a tool which would able to tell me that (i) there are multiple images of RM 29175, located at Lange Noordstraat 23, Middelburg, and (ii) there is no category Lange Nordstraat 23, Middelburg or equivalent. I am not sure though such a tool could be created. May be (i) can be done by bot and (ii) then manually.
Cheers Yaroslav
Hi Yaroslav,
I think that expanding the image tree makes a lot of sense. However, perhaps it makes more sense to expand from Buildings in Middelburg - then to streets - then to houses. It would make more sense to me to have a category "Buildings in Middelburg", "Buildings in Lange Noordstraat, Middelburg" and then "Lange Noordstraat 23, Middelburg". In very big cities, you might want to add a layer of city-areas (in Amsterdam for example).
However, I don't know what would be a useful threshold to create a category (both for streets and per building) - perhaps a more experienced Commons user can make a useful suggestion to that. My gut feeling would be that we would only create categories for five or more images, but I can be wrong there.

I perfectly agree with everything you write, and five images was also my personal suggestion for the threshold (I believe some exceptions can be make for somehow famous buildings). Right now we have most of the images sitting just in general categories "RM in the Netherlands" or at best "RM in city X". There is a lot of work ahead of us to categorize them also along usual lines like towns -> streets -> buildings.
Cheers Yaroslav
I believe a/the bot automatically puts the pictures per city which are now in http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Rijksmonumenten unless there's no ID present. Mvg, Bas

Might it be worth adding a commons category to the Monuments database (via the structured lists)? It's probably more relevant than the one image that has been chosen for the image parameter.

I agree.
I'd actually extend the model a bit. This is ours, and what allows us to do:
1) monuments table - it is compatible with monuments_all/monuments_pt(pt) 2) objlinks - it has the wiki links we parsed from the object descriptions (name field in monuments_all) - this allows us to rebuild the lists preserving wiki links; 3) extinfo - extended info: coordinate sources, multiple systems external ids (IGESPAR vs. SIPA), image count and image lists (for an object) and, obviously, the commons category.
In the end, we will be able to measure our progress, as you see it at:
http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/tools/stats/plataforma.php?&lang=en
I believe this will be a lot of help in further WLM / Heritage projects as well as interconnect our partners with the outcomes of this experience.
Yes, and I'm telling you that our tool does that, with a previous amount of work (before WLM started).
Hello,
I have seen many monuments without an identifier, because they were uploaded earlier and aren't added to the list.
Greetings - Romaine
