Hi all,
Hope you've been well! We are stoked to announce that we have just released v3.1.0 of the Commons Android app with WLM integration, and it is available in alpha (closed) testing.
The reason for closed testing is to allow organizers to test the app before the start of the competition, and also for us to get bug reports ahead of time. The closed alpha version includes testing-related conveniences that aren't available in publicly-accessible versions, most notably allowing WLM uploads before 1 September (with test templates so as not to clutter the actual WLM uploads).
We hope to release the public beta by 1 September, just in time for the start of the competition, if all goes well.
For more information on how to access closed alpha testing, as well as implementation details, screenshots, FAQ, etc, please view https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Mobile_app/WLM_release .
On that page, we will also be taking requests for countries that want to have their Wikidata property added, or countries that want to opt out of in-app WLM uploads. Please post your request by 3 September if possible, so that we can release an app update with them within the first week of the competition.
Thank you all for taking this journey with us; we hope to be able to help bring new participants to the competition, or at the very least to provide a solid foundation for future WLM mobile implementations to build upon.
Best regards, Josephine / @misaochan (Commons app project lead)
Hi Josephine Lim,
Is there any proper place for doing feature requests? After little testing I think that app would benefit from some kind of blacklist for unsuitable wikidata items for showing up on the map. It could be something like that if Wikidata item has P5008 value "Opt out WLM2021" (item) then it would not be shown on the map. This would enable the organizers easily to hide things which doesn't work on Commons apps map view.

Hi Kimmo,
Thanks for testing! Yes, please leave feature requests on the Talk page of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Mobile_app/WLM_release . I think a blacklist property would be great, however I believe you would also need to get consensus within the Wikidata community in order to add that? Once the property is added in Wikidata itself we should be able to filter for it.
Cheers.

Hi all,
The public beta for v3.1.0 of the Commons Android app was released yesterday, and it should be live on Google Play now. :) More details can be found on https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Mobile_app/WLM_release , and if you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to post in the corresponding talk page. For bug reports we would appreciate it if you could create an issue on our GitHub - https://github.com/commons-app/apps-android-commons/issues/new , or otherwise you can also post on the wiki talk page and I will copy it over to our GitHub tracker.
In order to participate in the open beta, you will need to: - Download the app from Google Play - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fr.free.nrw.commons - Sign up to be a beta tester - https://play.google.com/apps/testing/fr.free.nrw.commons
If no critical bugs are discovered with the open beta, we hope to release to production (all users) early next week.
Also, a gentle reminder - on our WLM_release page, we are taking requests for countries that want to have their Wikidata property added, or countries that want to opt out of in-app WLM uploads. If you want to request either of these things, please post your request by the end of this week, so I can collect the requests on Monday and do an update with them.
Thanks a lot. :)
Best regards, Josephine
