Hi all!
I'm glad to announce you that, this year, we will have a Wiki Loves
Monuments edition in... Antarctica!
We believe that, to actually make this a global contest, we need to reach
all continents. Antarctica, despite having no permanent population, has
several sites that commemorate the attempts of exploration and research
carried out by the international community over the past centuries. There
are 86 monuments declared by the Antarctic Treaty System that will
participate.
This certainly will be a particular and very symbolic contest. We expect a
very low amount of participants but most of the images will be unique, so
each one will have a lot of impact.
In the past weeks, I have been in contact with the Secretariat of the
Antarctic Treaty and they have accepted to support our contest. We expect
to reach different institutions (researchers, tourist operators, national
institutions, etc.) with the help of the ATS... but there are still a lot
of things to do. In line with the spirit of the Antarctic Treaty and the
Wikimedia Movement, this local contest will be an international one.
We expect a lot of volunteers of different countries to help us translating
the monuments lists, updating the website, contacting institutions in their
own countries, becoming juries and so on... Wikimedia Argentina will only
participate as a coordinator.
Do you want to join the WLM-AQ team? Send an e-mail to
correo(a)wikimedia.org.ar!
Also, you can take a look at our page in Commons:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2013_in_Anta…
We expect to reach this year to every place in the world... even the most
remote and cold! :)

Hi all
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I need an answer in order to write some competitor instructions!
In the UK, we will be asking competitors to upload via one of the local Listed Buildings pages on the English Wikipedia which are accessible eg via the page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listed_buildings_in_England
An example of a page which has recently been updated to use the WLM template is here (not all pages are complete yet):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grade_I_listed_buildings_in_Bristol
If there is no existing image of a buidling, clicking on the last column goes to the upload wizard, but if there is already an image it seems the competitor will need to do some manual work to find the listing code and upload separately. That is not good.
What would you recommend? Have I missed something, or do we need to change the list template so that it always has some sort of visible upload link?
Michael

Hi WLMers,
Just a quick reminder to ask to everyone to fill in your progress
table, this can be useful also to remind what needs to be done.
You can find the tables here:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2013/Progress
Please do fill them!
Thank you.

Dear Monuments Lovers,
Over the past 3 years, the Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest has developed from a one-country activity into a global endeavor that every year in September brings Wikipedians, Wikimedians, and photo enthusiasts together in order to shoot great pictures illustrating Cultural Heritage and to make them available on Wikimedia Commons. The photo contest has also turned out to be an excellent tool for the community to reach out to new contributors.
But what will we do when we have good pictures for virtually every official monument in some countries? - Please join us at Wikimania to look into the future of Wiki Loves Monuments! And share your great ideas already now on the Wiki!

Dear all,
Who among you has made a successful attempt to reach out to new
contributors during past Wiki Loves Monuments contests? – We are looking
for people who would like to share their experience so we can present it
during Wikimania <http://wikimania2013.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_page>
at the Wiki
Loves Monuments Future
Workshop<http://wikimania2013.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_-_…>.
Please get in touch with us if you would like to present an approach
yourself or if you know someone we should contact about it!
I have added as example the experience of Mexico (as it is the one I know
about) and the Photowalk they organized last year. We are looking for
similar experiences carried out to engage people in the contest and
incentivate them to be regular contributors to Wikimedia projects.
Don’t hesitate to add your experiences on the Wiki:

Kind regards,
Mónica Mora and Beat Estermann

Dear all,
After having participated in WLM 2011 and 2012, I would inform you that
Switzerland is planning to participate again in WLM 2013.
There is a working group in place and there is an on going discussion about
the organization, but all seems to address the Swiss group to support this
participation.

Hi all
The Android app for Wiki Loves Monuments from Wikimedia Foundation seems to have been redrawn from Google play.
Does anyone know if and when it will be released again on Google play or some other market place for apps?

Hey all,
After having participated in WLM 2012 and having a winning entry for the
same, it brings me pleasure to announce that India will be participating
again in WLM 2013.
Also Wikimedia India has agreed to support the participation and soon
enough someone from EC will reach to the community with the details about
prizes and jury for National competition on the relevant list.
Let us hope we get to see some more fascinating pictures of Taj Mahal and
many other monuments. Thanks.
