Calendars -- final announcement + tracking numbers

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Dear All, I am, finally, glad to inform you that the long-awaited Wiki Loves Monuments calendars have left Wikimedia Polska's office in Łódź and are on their way to your countries; at the end of this e-mail you will find a link to a Google spreadsheet and all necessary information. Firstly, let me begin with a short introduction about the delay we had (it's February 2012 already, and the calendars were supposed to have been delivered to you by the middle of December!); I feel that you all deserve an explanation and somebody to bite (that'd be me). == The Story of the Delay == Due to a delayed decision of the international jury of which we are all aware, we have started the work on the design of calendars only after the end of GLAMcamp in Amsterdam (2-4 December). This took us a week, and the printing company was given the final design file on December 14. However, because of the Christmas & New Year holiday season and some additional changes to the project, the calendars arrived at WMPL's office as late as January 16. And then, a catastrophic miscommunication has happened in Wikimedia Polska's side, for which I am the only one to be blamed -- so please accept my sincere apologies. I would also like to assure you that we have learned our lesson and will draw all the neccessary conclusions not to make this situation happen again in the future. == Technical details == The calendars are A4 in size, printed on a 170 g/m2 glossy photographic paper, and are combined together by a metal spiral on the longer side of the page (yes, they're horizontal). Due to the small size, the calendars have been given an additional cardboard, thanks to which they could not only be hanged on a wall, but also put on a flat surface (e.g. a desk). For those of you wishing to have a look at how the calendars look like, Tomasz "Polimerek" Ganicz has taken some photos <http://tools.wikimedia.pl/~poli/Kalendarz_WLM/> -- they should be uploaded to Commons very soon, we'll just need to sort out some copyright information to avoid an unnecessary havoc :) == Shipping information == All the shipment information, together with the tracking numbers, is available on the following Google spreadsheet: <http://goo.gl/N7abT>. I hope that all companies will do their job and there won't be any problems with shipping the packages to you -- as we have been told, you should await the packages in 3-5 working days, probably even sooner in the countries closer to Poland. As for Russia, we have, as previously agreed upon, sent the package via the Polish Postal Service; I don't have the tracking number yet and will approach you off-the-list with more information. We haven't also been able to send the package to the post-office box of Wikimedia Norge (as far as I remember, it happened to WMDE, too), so I decided to use another address instead. Wikimedia Czech Republic - joining Wiki Loves Monuments!

Hello everybody! Few weeks ago the board of Wikimedia Czech Republic agreed that we would like to participate in 2012 Wiki Loves Monuments contest. We were ipressed by the 2011 results. Some members of czech Wikipedia community also asked why the heck we do not participate in this competition. Last year we organized similar event - the best contributors that expanded some articles from the list chosen by a particular committee (http://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedie:Ceny_za_rozvoj_%C4%8Desk%C3%A9_Wikip… ) were rewarded. Also, there is a lot of skilled photographers in our community and we have already several activities of photographic nature that involve both Wikimedia Czech Republic chapter and Wikipedia community. WLM US Update (and a bit o' Canada!)

Hi everyone, We just wrapped up an amazing GLAMcamp DC. Not only was the weekend productive and inspiring, but we were able to solidify some solid plans for this year's WLM. Here is a brief yet disorganized summary: * Kaldari gave a brief explanation to the group about how the tech side works. This was to give us a better idea of what it would entail to have the United States participate, and how he can help. (Thanks Kaldari for volunteering!) * Kippelboy gave a great explanation of how WLM worked (Catalonia/Spain?) in his area and it was really really valuable. He also was great at calming us all down - especially me! * On that note, Benoit, myself, and a few other folks decided to be BOLD! First, I'm working on the Commons page for the WLM US page, more to come with that, I've been traveling and really really busy. That will reflect these updates in an organized way. * We have decided once we can gain access to the WLM.us website (Aude purchased) we are going to translate, copy and paste a WLM site that is similar to others. Benoit is helping me with this, as I am not a tech genius but I want to get it done since we are a bit behind schedule. * We are going to translate WLM US into Spanish, hoping to get more Spanish speaking communities involved. (Spanish speaking communities are the fastest growing in the US) * We have decided to focus specifically on ONLY the National Register of Historic Places. Not only is this easier for us to digest the data (since most of the data for state specific content isn't easily organized on Wikipedia at this point), but it's also less overwhelming for first time participants. Next year we can expand. Besides, over 1 million properties are on NHRP - I think we'll be just fine :) * Templates will be modified so that each state can have it's own - it'll just show the flag and name of that state. I'm not sure how all that works, but, Jarek, Kaldari and Benoit are going to be on top of it. * We will of course reach out to NHRP for a partnership opportunity and we need to get a game plan together for other sponsors. Right now we just need to get a web presence. * We haven't quite solidified a judging process for the US winner, however, we did agree that the public will vote on the winner(s). I'm thinking it'll run something like the Commons Picture of the Day contest with some assistance from volunteers to weed out just plain bad images (blurry, rainy, ideally not helpful for WM projects). Not more details on that at this time. * We figure that since the US is so large, Wikimedians can organize their own Wiki takes and road trip events, mixed with encouraging national participation. All 50 states and US territories will be involved in the NHRP data. * Flickr will be used, we might have some special groups organized, contests, we're not sure yet. I'm a big Flickr person, so, I've offered to lend a big hand with this. Other details are rather unimportant right now, but we've got the ball rolling. Short term goal right now: * Get a web presence. I am seeking help, because I am not savvy with graphic design, to modify the WLM logo to feature "United States" someplace in the logo. Please let me know if you can help (or be bold and do it ;-) ). This week I have other priorities, but I hope when I'm back in DC I can get the website content started. Benoit and I will be speaking with each other. I also know we want to have a meeting at Wikimania about this. Perhaps after we get the web presence part started, a Skype can be arranged or an IRC talk for those interested in volunteering for the US/Canada events. We also are going to have cross-border events too :) I hope the US people don't mind me being bold about this, I just want to get the ball rolling, and I know that myself, Kaldari, Benoit and Pharos have agreed that "let's do this and get it started now," is the best policy. Hallo, would like to add two new fileds to monuments_all table (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Monumen…): article varchar(255) NOT NULL DEFAULT '' and registrant_url varchar(255) NOT NULL DEFAULT '' article would contain wiki article title (in most cases the article about the monument) extracted from the name field -- first wikilink in the name field article would be formatted same as page_title in http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Page_table -- i.e. spaces replaced with '_'. registrant_url would contain registrant url of the monument, like http://www.culture.gouv.fr/public/mistral/merimee_fr?ACTION=CHERCHER&FIELD_…, http://register.muinas.ee/?menuID=monument&action=view&id=20875, etc Any suggestions on those fields? -- Raul

WLM: USA

Hi, everyone. I've been pretty quiet since adding my name to the group of people interested in working on WLM USA. I just wanted to check and see if the USA team has discussed or decided on an approach or any activities? I've been keeping an eye on the wiki, but haven't seen any discussion, etc... Sarah: I just saw your tweet about the the progress at GLAM Camp. Awesome! I'm guessing you're taking the lead here, but just want to let you know I'm happy to help any way you need! I promised Lodewijk a long time ago that I'd help recruit and plan, but I wanted to check in with the team before I did anything to make sure I'm aligned with what you guys have decided. Ukraine will participate

Wikimedia Ukraine takes a decision to join "Wiki loves monuments" movement and to organize the competition in Ukraine this year. Here<http://ua.wikimedia.org/wiki/%D0%A0%D1%96%D1%88%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%BD%D1%8F_%D0…>is the Board resolution and here <http://ua.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_loves_monuments> is a project page in our official site. Unfortunately we could not register wikilovesmonuments.ua because HLD .uais permitted for official trademarks only. So we decided to register domain wikilovesmonuments.in.ua, We hope it could be read in English as meaningful. Concerning "wikilovesmonuments.TLD" in the local team timeline: is such domain name obligatory? We don't have a chapter and we don't have sponsors yet. On the other hand, we have wikimedia.by domain and making the project in wlm.wikimedia.by would be fine.
