Hi everyone,
I'm forwarding a message from the WMF Search team about the Wikidata Query
Service (WDQS) User Survey 2021. I hope some of you might find
it interesting!
Hi all,
In the 2021–2022 fiscal year, the WMF Search team is working on scaling up
Wikidata Query Service (WDQS) to handle increasing graph size and queries –
we will be following up shortly with more updates regarding this. In order
to design a querying service that works for most use cases, it is important
for us to understand the needs of WDQS users.
We are trying to cover the diverse use cases of WDQS. Whether you are an
occasional user of the service, running queries regularly, for example for
maintenance purposes, or hitting the WDQS daily with your tools, your
feedback is welcome on this short survey. If you are interested in
providing feedback, please fill out our survey:
https://forms.gle/WzBDGWPUsi43YAhBA
Thanks for your participation!
This survey will be conducted via a third-party service, which may subject
it to additional terms. For more information on privacy and data-handling,
see the survey privacy statement
<https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/WDQS_User_Survey_2021_Privacy_Stateme…>.
For technical issues with the survey, please contact mpham(a)wikimedia.org.

Greetings reliable & underrepresented knowledge sources enthusiasts!
We are Diego de la Hera <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Diegodlh> and
Scann <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Scann>, longtime friends and
collaborators in several open knowledge projects. Recently, the Wikimedia
Foundation awarded us a grant to develop Web2Cit: Visual Editor for Citoid
Web Translators
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Diegodlh/Web2Cit:_Visual_Edi…>.
The product that will be developed through this grant is a visual editor
that allows non-technical users to improve Citoid’s ability to add
references to Wikipedia articles. The aim of the project is to widen the
coverage of underrepresented sources in Wikipedia.
Now, as we start moving with this project, we are putting together an
advisory board that will help us build sustainability and community
involvement for this project. This is an open call for volunteers that want
to help us think through some critical aspects of the project and overall
help us steward it to its current and future success.
Here you can find more information about the current call for members:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Web2Cit/Advisory_Board/Call_for_members
*Deadline for applying is August 9th, 2021. *We're looking forward to
hearing from you!
cheers,
Scann & Diego
Dear GLAM-Wiki professionals and enthusiasts,
The Luxembourg Competency Network on Digital Cultural Heritage is developing a Shared Authority File, to combine the knowledge from national heritage institutions and to increase the impact of the member institutions' digitised collections.
The Shared Authority File uses Wikibase as its main data store and internal user interface, and has created an extension that might be of relevance to the broader GLAM sector: A datatype for Extended Date Time Format compliant statements.
Wikibase contains a datetime representation based on ISO 8601:2004 <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_8601>. The project extended the Wikibase software through an Extended Data Time Format extension, which includes ISO 8601:2019 <https://www.iso.org/obp/ui/#iso:std:iso:8601:-1:ed-1:v1:en>, and their extensions in a new datatype which can then be utilized within a Wikibase instance.
This resulted in two open source products. A library <https://github.com/ProfessionalWiki/EDTF> for the validation and humanisation of EDTF dates in PHP, and an extension <https://github.com/ProfessionalWiki/WikibaseEdtf> to WikiBase to use this library. Both are available as open source software for all to use and improve. The humanisation is translated in various languages using Translate.wiki <https://translatewiki.net/wiki/FAQ>.
With this email I’m asking support for the inclusion of this work into the fall release of the Wikibase Docker bundle. You can voice your support through this ticket: Include the EDTF Datatype extension in the Fall 2021 Wikibase Docker release <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T280656>
This would allow other GLAM initiatives using Wikibase to easily make use of the EDTF standard within their own Wikibase deployments.
Feedback and contributions to the repositories for this extension as a stand alone product are also welcomed!
Thanks for your attention and best wishes,
Maarten Brinkerink
We hope this email finds you well and you are staying safe.
The Afrocine Project core team would once again like to thank everyone who
contributed towards ensuring the success of the Months of African Cinema
Contest in 2020. Due to your valued efforts, the third iteration was a
success! Over 3,000 articles were created across various Wikimedia projects
and in 19 different languages.
Months of African Cinema, 2021 is three months away! To ensure a more
seamless organization this year and better support, we are calling on
interested local organizers from across the movement to join us in
facilitating this contest in their various communities.
This year, in addition to local community organizers, we are particularly
also inviting Wikimedians to help coordinate the contest in their local
languages, as this will play a huge role in the number of languages that
would be eligible for international prizes. If you would love to join us in
organizing this exciting contest in your local community or your local
language wiki, kindly show your interest by listing your community or
project on the organizer’s meta page. [1] Please try to sign up by 23rd
July 2021.
Thank you once again! We are looking forward to your participation.
Kind regards,
Ebenezer Mlay,
Community Liaison, Afrocine Project
