Hi all!
The next GLAMout is Friday September 6! (That's currently "tomorrow" for US
folks but "today" for those further east.)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/GLAMout/2013/September
GLAMouts are monthly live Google Hangout on Air sessions where we discuss
developments in GLAM-Wiki. It will also be recorded for later. This GLAMout
is 3–4 p.m. EDT | 12–1 p.m. PDT | 7–8 p.m. UTC. The link to the video will
be available via Twitter on the @glamwiki account and #glamwiki hashtag,
and also shared with this list. *Please join the conversation by using the
#glamwiki hashtag!* We've had great success with this in our past GLAMouts.
The GLAMout is a chance to share important news or progress on GLAM-Wiki
projects. We did not have an August GLAMout due to Wikimania, so this one
will likely be pretty packed with updates. If you have additional updates
please do add them to the October GLAMout agenda so we can be sure to
include them next month.

Thanks so much!

Hi GLAM-Wikiers,
There is a conversation going on at Wikipedia
talk:GLAM#<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:GLAM#GLAM-Wiki_Section_in_Manu…>GLAM-Wiki
Section in Manual of
Style?<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:GLAM#GLAM-Wiki_Section_in_Manu…>,
about creating a GLAM-Wiki section or page of the Manual of Style that
could use your input.
I drafted some reasons why I think it would be helpful to have a GLAM-Wiki
Manual of Style subpage, which I've posted on the talk page mentioned
above, and I'll copy them below.
Post to the talk page or reply to this email to discuss further.
1. The GLAM-Wiki movement is rapidly growing and more GLAM professionals
are searching for resources to help guide them in adopting editing policies
everyday.
2. There are dozens of GLAM-Wiki resources dispersed throughout
Wikipedia, with similar, overlapping content. By synchronizing these
resources, and providing cite-able sections in the manual of style, there
could be more understanding and common language within the GLAM community.
3. Though there are dozens of GLAM-Wiki resources, new
Wikipedians-in-Residence often still feel the need to generate more guides
because there is no definitive version.
4. The Manual of Style already includes information and templates that
speak to the GLAM-community, but it would be helpful for GLAM editors and
Wikipedians-in-Residence if they were aggregated together. The closest
things we have now are: Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Visual arts#Museums
and collections<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Visual_arts#Museums…>,
red links in outreach:GLAM/Model
projects<https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM/Model_projects>,
and a whole lot of different learning resources in the GLAM
Bookshelf<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/Bookshelf>,
as well as some resources floating on user pages, GLAM pages, etc.
5. GLAMs have a lot of documents and artifacts, such as museum
collections, catalogs, finding aids, and archival materials, that can be
difficult to put into the current templates provided, and questions about
these materials are extremely common among GLAM professional Wikipedians,
especially in the early days of their involvement with GLAM-Wiki.
6. It would be helpful for private, non-GLAM editors to have a GLAM
manual of style so that they could help monitor and regulate GLAM editing
and watch out for COI issues.
I would love to hear more opinions on this proposal! I just got a draft of
a GLAM MOS subpage<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:OR_drohowa/sandbox/MOSdraft>started
as well and I'm seeking help and collaborations.
Thanks,
Dorothy

Further to the discussions taking place on the Wikipedia:GLAM talk page about a GLAM manual of style and other more standardised resources for both GLAM reps and Wikimedians interested in GLAM collaborations, I have uploaded a publicly accessible and editable version of an information booklet to Google Drive (https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B-54az_yPpKyRnlCQWV6MEFGVXc/edit?usp=sharing). I originally designed the booklet to be distributed to NLS staff but have since removed all of the NLS-specific information and am hoping that other GLAM collaborators would be able to expand the resource into one that is more suitable for other institutions as well as libraries, and perhaps is a bit more specific.
I welcome any and all revisions and contributions!
Cheers,
Ally

I submitted a proposal to MW2014 - if it gets accepted I'll be there and
happy to help.

October will be a big month for Wikimedia events in Edinburgh! In addition to the Ada Lovelace Festival of Wikipedia workshop on 3 October and the Edinburgh Wikimeet on 27 October (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Edinburgh_4), we are also hosting an edit-a-thon on Early Photography in Scotland on 19 October.
The Edinburgh Calotype Club was the first photographic club in the world, and two albums of their photographs are held by the National Library of Scotland and the Edinburgh City Libraries, as well as many additional resources both primary and secondary. We warmly invite anyone with an interest in the history of photography or photography in general to help share the story of Edinburgh's contribution to the early development of photography in the late 19th and early 20th centuries!
Details about the event can be found on the events page at https://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Early_Photography_in_Scotland_Edit-a-thon; please share with friends and colleagues in and around Edinburgh, Wikipedians and non-Wikipedians alike. There will be a training workshop for new editors held before the edit-a-thon, and we will provide lunch and refreshments for all participants.
Come join us for what I'm sure will be a brilliant event!

Hello all - apologies for any cross-posting.
Just wanted to announce that there will be a Wikimeet taking place in Edinburgh on Sunday, 27 October, at the Malt Shovel Inn from 13:00 onwards. The Malt Shovel Inn is a very short (i.e. 2-3 minute) walk from Waverley station, so we hope to encourage Wikimedians and GLAM representatives interested in GLAMWiki collaborations to attend from outside of Edinburgh as well. Details are available on the events page here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Edinburgh_4. This is the fourth Edinburgh meetup, but the first since 2011 as far as I can tell. It also follows off of two successful Wikimeets in Glasgow this past year, and we hope this trend will continue!
There is no formal agenda but as you can see on the events page a number of GLAM events have been raised as of interest so we very much hope to see many faces both new and old from WMUK and cultural institutions in Scotland.
See you there!

Thanks for posting the GLAM hangout link, Lori.
It would be nice it the topics were mentioned along with the link so I could find these again at a later date.
Or better, maybe a short summary in the GLAM monthly report?
Also, I am wondering if the GLAM monthly report shouldn't be posted to this list, since it is public.
Jane
