[note cross-posting]
I am pleased to share with you the news that I shall be Wikipedian in
Residence with Staffordshire Archive & Heritage Service, here in the
English Midlands, from mid-November (part-time).
This is a pilot project. I will be working with number of
Staffordshire museums, to increase staff awareness of Wikipedia, train
them to edit, and make recommendations for future public engagement
(e.g. editathons), as well as planning a larger project to follow.
I shall create a Wikipedia project page once I am in post.
Naturally, I hope that the use of QRpedia, and the release of some
media under an open licence, will feature.
I hope you share my pleasure in looking forward to this promising project.

Hello,
last week Wikimedia Germany held together with four more partners a GLAM
Conference at the Jewish Museum in Berlin:
ShapingAccess! <http://www.zugang-gestalten.de/english/>
More responsibility for cultural heritage
Wikipedia and Wiki loves monuments were well used examples for best
practice: sharing information and gaining mutual benefits. More than 200
executives of GLAM institutions attended the two days conference. Essential
was Pavel Richter's (CEO WMDE) claim:
"Nicht der Zugang zu kulturellem Erbe unterliegt einer Begründungspflicht,
sondern dessen Verknappung."
#*ke12*<https://twitter.com/search?q=%23ke12&src=hash>
translated to "It is not the access to cultural heritage that is obliged to
to argue for itself but its scarity."
Please follow German press echo
here<http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/Presse> and
read the Wikimedia
Blog<http://blog.wikimedia.de/2012/10/24/zugang-gestalten-heisst-miteinander-red…>
.
The conference will be followed up by a national screening of access
policies and cooperation projects in GLAM institutions.
best regards

Hi folks,
We have a translation request from colleagues at Wikimedia CEE
(central & Eastern Europe), to make translations of
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smedestraat_33_(Haarlem)
(currently in English, Dutch and Serbian).
As it's only 48 words, that shouldn't be too onerous!

Hi all,
I just wanted to let you all know that Friday was my last day as Wikipedian
in Residence at the US National Archives. I would like to thank you all who
helped make the project a success. It has been a great year, and I think we
accomplished a lot more than either I or NARA had hoped for at the start,
especially importantly in helping to change the culture of the institution
and gaining several advocates for our cause from the ranks of NARA's
professionals, including David Ferriero himself. I am a little sad to see
it end, but I am grateful to have been given the opportunity.
NARA is not going to be hiring a new Wikipedian in Residence in the short
term—my leaving ultimately came down to human resources issues, not because
I wanted to go or they wanted me to leave. There is a possibility that they
will create a permanent position if they can get approval, but that may
take a long time. In any case, the institution is still quite
Wikipedia-friendly, and I expect them to remain allies in some capacity.
And, of course, I still intend to remain involved in GLAM efforts, whether
it is here in DC or elsewhere. :-)

Hello,
I am writing to introduce you to my newly-launched blog on American
material culture,
www.themeaningsofthings.org/wordpress. Please take a look at it.
Each week, I will be featuring a different object along with an
interpretive essay that I write.
Among other things, I hope to showcase museum objects that are not
available to the public on account of their being kept in storage (under
the category “Hidden Museum Treasures.”) I’d like to provide museums with
an alternative venue in which to display, virtually, objects they cannot
show inside their walls.
I hope I may interest some of you in participating in my project.
Needless to say, all museums will be fully credited for the use of images
of their objects, and a link to the museum website included in the related
essay.
Besides writing the essays myself, I am open to having guest editors submit
essays as well. If I am the author of the essay relating to a museum
object, I will submit my essay to the institution’s curator prior to its
publication on my blog, for any corrections or editorial suggestions.
I realize that what I am proposing is far more simply said than done; as a
former museum curator myself, I am aware that even small museums may have
hundreds, if not thousands of objects in storage, of great variety, and
that catalogs can be labyrinthine in their complexity. I know that rights
and reproductions issues can also be problematic.
This letter is simply to elicit interest. *If you are interested in taking
part in this project, please contact me*, and then we can work towards a
way in which I can either search your collections database, or take
suggestions for topics based upon your collections, or in some other way to
work together. I live in the East Coast tristate metropolitan area and
often travel to attend conferences, so that direct meetings are possible in
many cases.
I want my blog to be accessible to a non-academic audience, but am also
interested in its use a teaching tool. I would value feedback on this
point, as well.
Yours in the spirit of cooperative ventures,

Note that I've copied cultural partners and GLAM-US, but I think this can
be discussed on the public GLAM list.
I wanted to start a thread on the GLAM Bootcamp concept, which was one of
the main outcomes from GLAMcamp London, since I know even those of you that
were there weren't all in our breakout session. The observation was made
that one of our main issues is expanding the numbers of GLAM Wikipedians,
but GLAMcamps are aimed at sharing best practices among experienced GLAM
Wikipedians, not training new ones. Thus, the GLAM Bootcamp concept is that
we'll bring a dozen or so experienced (but non-GLAM) Wikipedians together
and train them in a number of GLAM-Wiki skills, like GLAM principles,
copyright, metrics, communications, conflict of interest, event planning,
Commons, and so on. You can read more at Lodewijk's summary, based on the
etherpad notes, here: http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM_Bootcamp
I think training a few people at a time, if they are well-selected and
follow through on the skills they hava gained, is actually a scalable model
since there are so few of us anyway. We'll likely be able to secure a venue
for free from a GLAM partner, since we'll only require a conference room.
We'd be relying on chapter and/or WMF funding for travel and per diem for a
relatively small group. I think the main obstacle is likely having a good
organizing group with enough experience and dedication to developing the
necessary documentation and presentations for the training sessions.
At GLAMcamp, we agreed to plan for (or at least inquire about within our
local communities) bootcamps in the US and Germany within 6 months. I have
informally taken the lead for the US GLAM Bootcamp so far. I spoke to NARA
folks last week, who gave his blessing to NARA hosting such an event in DC.
We've been pretty DC-centric with GLAM events in the US, but personally
think there is value going first to a well-known GLAM with a lot of
internal support to establish the model for these types of events. If there
is disagreement, though, it's obviously not just my decision. I'll be going
to the next Wikimedia DC board meeting on October 6 to present the idea,
since they will be important if this is held in DC (and probably even if it
isn't). In preparation, I have begun putting together a more detailed, but
still hypothetical, program for the US GLAM Bootcamp here:
http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM_Bootcamp/US.
I have some more specific questions about logistics and audience, but for
now I just wanted to loop everyone in on what's going on and ask for your
thoughts and reactions to the GLAM bootcamp concept. And please feel free
also to edit the pages on outreach.
Dominic
Hi!
>From today, I am working at the Royal Library in Copenhagen, trying to get
their employees and core users to share their knowledge with Wikipedia. The
job is more or less the same as what I did as Wikipedian-in-Residence at
the National Museum, the process is different, however, as the library
approached me directly instead of going through the community.
The job is salaried, three months, full time.
regards,
Ole
