Hi all,
There's been a recent bit of coverage in the UK over the issue of museums
charging researchers for collection access.
The strongest arguments for free and open access have come from the
Prehistoric Society and can be seen on the Museum's Association Website
<http://www.museumsassociation.org/museums-journal/news/17032015-museums-cri…>
.
At York Museums Trust (hosts of my project) they do not charge researchers
and have recently begun insisting that visiting researchers openly licence
any photographs they take of collections items and encouraging them to
pursue open access publishing of the research output (not always possible).
I was wondering whether the GLAMwiki movement might like to speak on the
issue and encourage GLAMs with which we are working to consider this part
of their openness strategy.
Research is one of the key ways in which collections are enriched. I for
one am fed up with finding obscure notes on collection databases implying
the existence of research done in the last decade which is now invisible
online and/or has no paper-trail at the museum.
What do people think?
Cheers,
Pat

Hello all,
Are you a fan of all things fairground? Candy floss, toffee apples and games of chance? And might you be in the vicinity of Glasgow on the afternoon of 7th May?
If so, myself and Glasgow Museums would love to see you at the Scottish Fairground Culture Editathon, being held at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow. More details on the event page: https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Scottish_Fairground_Culture_Editathon
All the best, Sara

Dear all,
First my apologies for the double posting
Thank you for your fast answers I am sorry that I am answering that late,
but I was abroad (on a numismatic exhibition) and I was overbooked.
So I am planning to create a new page for the collaboration in Commons, as
well as a special category for this collaboration.
I will try to use the templates that you suggest (Template:Artwork), and
will prepare a (temporary) template with numismatic parameters as an
embedded template in the "description" parameter. It can thus be one day
integrated in the artwork template, if necessary. And I will create a
template for references, explaining that the information in the template is
for the indication of the coins, made by the Society.
You will be welcome to check and review the first uploads according to this
collaboration, and return feedback.
Yours sincerely,
Vladislav Nedelev
Hello all,
I'm a Wikimedian in Residence in Scotland, and was wondering if anyone working in European GLAMs has had any chat about the revision of the above - aka the PSI Directive? (There's a relatively clear guide about the implications of the amended directive here: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documents/information-management/psi-dir…)
In terms of open knowledge, this seems to be a Good Thing, although there are concerns (and they are to be expected) in some quarters about the potential impact upon income generation.
Would love to hear everyone's views!

Hi everyone,
Wednesday, March 25th from 5:30-8:30pm EST the Philadelphia Museum of Art will host an edit-a-thon to add and improve articles on African American artists in conjunction with our exhibition Represent: 200 Years of African American Art<http://www.philamuseum.org/exhibitions/815.html>. Check here<http://www.philamuseum.org/calendar/?gv=0&id=25&et=0&dt=March_2015> for other events on the day.
Information on the edit-a-thon can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Philadelphia/Represent_Afric….
The event is open to the public and free after Museum admission, which is pay-what-you-wish on Wednesdays after 5pm. New and experienced editors are welcome. Newcomers are encouraged to attend the first hour of the event for a basic training session, led by Mary Mark Ockerbloom, Wikipedian in residence at the Chemical Heritage Foundation.
We encourage attendees to bring their own laptops and power cords.
Please help us spread the word!

Dear all,
My name is Vladislav Nedelev, from Bulgaria, and some of you probably
remember me from the Wikimedia CEE Meeting in Kiev in December 2014.
After few weeks of communication between me and Vassia Atanassova
(Spiritia) as representatives of the user group of ’ Wikimedians of
Bulgaria’ and the Numismatic Society – ‘Philippopolis’, we have their
permission to upload a collection of 236 pictures of 118 ancient Roman
coins, minted in Philippopolis, now Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The collection
comprises some well preserved bronze coins, minted during the reign of
eleven Roman Emperors from 81 to 222 year AD, among whom Antoninus Pius,
Caracalla, Commodus, Elagabalus, Geta, Marcus Aurelius and Septimius
Severus. The collection is very exhaustively described, with data about
the diameter, weight, emperor, the material and inscription on the coins.
Together with the people for the Society we prepared a short announcement
about this GLAM collaboration project, which is published (in Bulgarian) on
the Society’s website
<http://nd-philippopol.com/%D1%81%D1%8A%D1%82%D1%80%D1%83%D0%B4%D0%BD%D0%B8%…>.
After this preparation, now we reach the point where we are supposed to
start uploading pictures in Commons. But we have some questions:
- Do you think that we have to create a new page in the “Commons”
namespace about the collaboration in commons, given that we already have a
page
<https://bg.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A3%D0%B8%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%BF%D0%B5%D0%B4%D0…>
in the Bulgarian Wikipedia. Is there a model for pages for such
collaborations?
- Do you recommending us to use the default template
“Information”, or shall we create a new special template for coins with
different parameters like diameter, weight, emperor, etc., and information
about the collaboration and about the source of the pictures. Can you
suggest a more specific template for coins?
- Are we missing some vitally important thing to do or announce in
relation to this GLAM collaboration? I am attaching а translation of the
news
<http://nd-philippopol.com/%D1%81%D1%8A%D1%82%D1%80%D1%83%D0%B4%D0%BD%D0%B8%…>
from the official web site of the society?
Any advise and help to make these first steps are more than welcome!
Yours sincerely,
Vladislav Nedelev
