Dear all,
The Wiki In Africa team, organiser of Wiki Loves Africa International would
like to get feedback from Wiki Loves Africa 2022 participants through a
short survey. This is to help the team to understand what didn’t work well,
and what worked well in order to make Wiki Loves Africa better in the
future. To fill the short survey, visit https://bit.ly/WLA22_survey

Subject: [Oct 28 & 30] Final conversation hour, free knowledge advocacy
priorities
To: <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear Wikimedians,
You are warmly invited to our* final conversation hour *of the year. The
topic this month is advocacy priorities for the Free Knowledge Movement.
Our speaker is Rebecca MacKinnon, VP of Global Advocacy @ WMF.
We are hosting two calls in two different time zones:
-
October 28 @ 15:00 UTC (check your local time
<https://zonestamp.toolforge.org/1666969227>)
-
October 30 @ 12:00 UTC (check your local time
<https://zonestamp.toolforge.org/1667131201>)
We will discuss the Foundation’s advocacy priorities, mission, staff, and
collaboration opportunities. If you’ve ever wondered why the Foundation has
a global advocacy team, what we do, why you have been emailed by so many
people on the same team, or how you can work with us, then join us. We have
answers!
The first half of the call is a presentation from the WMF Global Advocacy
team. The second half will be an engaging discussion.
Details on how to join the Zoom call and how to add to the agenda can be
found on Meta.

Greetings Wikimedia family,
I am delighted to share *Wiki Rescues Manuscripts
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Rescues_Manuscripts>*, a
call-to-action and project to support the digitization of manuscripts on
Wikimedia platforms (Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource). The project
consists of two complementary pilots. The first pilot digitizes manuscripts
in Indonesia
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Rescues_Manuscripts#Wiki_Rescues_Manus…>
through a collaboration with PPIM <https://ppim.uinjkt.ac.id/>, Wikimedia
Indonesia, and other partners. The second pilot tests the viability of
Transkribus
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Rescues_Manuscripts#Transkribus_pilot>
(an AI-powered text and handwriting recognition tool) for languages that
are not yet supported by OCR (optical character recognition). We are
starting with the Balinese language because the community has already
produced the number of transcriptions that we need to create a model in
Transkribus.
I invite you to *sign-up as a Learning Partner* in the final section of the
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Rescues_Manuscripts#Learning_partners_…>Meta-Wiki
page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Rescues_Manuscripts#Learning_partners_…>
if
your community, affiliate, or organization is interested in digitizing
manuscripts. We would love to not only support you but also learn from you.I
am happy to share that *two Wikisource Technical Fellows (Kolawole Lawal &
Parthiv Menon)* will be contributing to the Wiki Rescues Manuscripts
project until June 2023. They will focus on meeting the technical needs of
Indonesian Wikisource communities and potentially integrating Transrkibus
into Wikimedia OCR. Here is a brief introduction from each of them:*Hi
everyone, I am Kolawole. I’m from Nigeria. I am glad to be a part of the
Wikimedia movement. I love solving software-related problems and listening
to good music. I look forward to collaborating and contributing to
Wikisource as a Technical Fellow.**Hello! I am Parthiv, a final year
undergraduate student from India. I love to read and draw, enjoy meeting
new people, exploring new places, playing sports, and (unpopular opinion)
generally not a big fan of cities. I am fluent with English, Hindi,
Gujarati and Malayalam, and can understand a couple of other South Indian
languages as well. More importantly, I am looking forward to my time here
for it surely does seem like it's going to be fun :)*Finally, I would like
to invite you all to join us for the next Wikisource Triage meeting
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikisource_Triage_meetings#October_2022_mee…>
on *26th October 2022 at 2 PM UTC (7:30 PM IST)* where we will be
discussing the pilots and introducing Kolawale and Parthiv. Feel free to
edit the agenda directly to add further topics for the meeting. Kindly drop
me an email on sgill(a)wikimedia.org if you would like to be added to the
calendar invitation for the meeting.
Looking forward to meeting some of you next week. Have a great weekend!

Satdeep

Dear all,
as part of the Planetary Atoll: Connecting Latin American dots exhibition
<https://www.panke.gallery/exhibition/planetaryatoll/> we want to invite
you to join us in person or online for editing and creating new Wikipedia
pages related to Latin American net artists and net art history!
As a way to consolidate the artists' recognition across continents, and
democratize art history, this fun, stimulating, empowering event is
dedicated to adding entries to Wikipedia. As today's most visited global
research platform, Wikipedia becomes essential to endorsement. Ask
questions or register for this free event by email to info(a)panke.gallery
Date: 22.10.2022
Time:10:00–17:00 *CEST*
In person event: Wikimedia Deutschland *e.V.* - Tempelhofer Ufer 23/24,
10963 Berlin
Online: (link will be sent upon registration)
What to expect from the event
A collaborative event where together we will learn to add and/or edit
entries in Wikipedia, consolidating Latin references in this great world
encyclopedia.
The entries will be entered primarily in English, but help is also needed
for translation into Portuguese and Spanish. All help is welcome: writing
texts, searching for validation references, etc.
The event will provide non-alcoholic drinks and snacks.
Do you need any additional support? Let us know in advance.
Don’t have a laptop and want to participate? Need childcare? Any special
requirements for your body to be part of? If you let us know in advance, we
will try to work out together how to accommodate you.
All the best,
Cin from WMDE & Paloma from panke.gallery
Greetings, everyone!
The WMF Inuka team [1] is exploring having the Wikistories tool [2] on
Commons, so we want to get your feedback.
*Our proposal*
The Inuka team believes the Wikistories tool would significantly increase
our projects' visual form of knowledge if we introduce a Wikistories
workflow in WikiCommons. The above is because the Commons is a repository
of freely licensed media files that is discoverable across other projects
and languages. We have outlined our goals for this initiative on the
project page [3], and we are optimistic about a good outcome. However, the
Wikistories on Commons initiative is still a proposal that will require the
WikiCommons community's feedback/ input on our design explorations before
we commit to the work.
*Our request *
In the next three weeks, the Inuka team would want you as a member of the
Commons community to:
- Read more about the initiative.
- Attend our proposed office hours, where we will present our design
exploration and discuss our plan with this proposal.
- Give feedback on this initiative and share your input about the design
exploration on the talk page [4] we have created.
We have provided three spots for office hours.
- Wednesday, 26th October at 10:00 UTC [5]
- Saturday, 29th October at 15:00 UTC [6]
- Monday 31st October at 06:00 UTC [7]
Please click on the date that works for you and register to attend the
office hour. If you can't attend, that is fine. However, we will appreciate
your feedback about the design exploration [8] and the Wikistories on
Commons proposal on the talk page.
We, the Inuka team, are excited about this work's possibilities, and we
look forward to having you all onboard at every phase.
Thank you!
