Found this site recently: http://augmentwikipedia.org/
It allows uploading 3D models about the subjects of wikipedia articles, and one can get a 3D, augmented-reality view of the models with a smartphone (when accessing Wikipedia through some special app, presumably? The site is not clear about that.)
This seems very useful for a number of things (molecules, buildings, 3D animations etc) and a good way to connect Wikipedia with the "free modeling" movement which has been picking up steam recently, with 3D printing getting cheaper and with the free software ecosystem aroung 3D animation getting more and more evolved.
Should Wikipedia try to support this (or, 3D models in general)? If so, what is needed? If I understand it correctly, the main reason they had to create a separate site is that 3D models are not allowed on Commons; that would be easy to fix.
