Does anyone know if the plan for the future (after existing accounts are sorted out) is to have names be reserved when you register them anywhere, though?
When you merge your account, the name is reserved across all Wikimedia
projects (no one except the Global account holder could register that name on any wiki). The merge operation itself is still opt-in (the account is not merged upon signup yet), meaning you have to merge it before the username gets reserved. *1
