The internet archive is a very good initiative, and definitely one of the most obvious choices for hosting media files like this. However, i do think that we should at least have one place for ourselves to host files like this, and / or have a very simple and direct connection to the internet archive's upload functionality, preferably a way to upload files directly from Wikimedia Commons ('Do you have a large video file? Try our section at the internet archive').

Is there some sort of policy on where (long) videos like this should go? I still have something like 10 hours or more video footage of the Dutch Wikimedia Conference, from october last year. I was thinking of uploading it on Commons, but is has to be transcoded to Theora (which i have done before, but is quite a hassle) and there seems to be some kind of file size limit (1 hour of video is very large of course). I could also upload the videos to the Wikimedia Nederland server (we have an account with about 200gb space), but it would seem better if there is some kind of general Wikimedia server for large files like this...

I think the Internet Archive would be an ideal place for long videos, because:
- They have an unlimited storage space, and no restrictions on video
length or file size (these are the people who literally archive the entire internet, as best as they can)
They're an "allied" non-profit pro-free culture project.
We already have a bunch of long videos there, and hopefully they'll
be organized into a distinct sub-collection in the relatively near future.
Thanks

Currently all the Wikimedia videos (of various talks, activities, and conferences) on the Internet Archive are in the catch-all Open Source Movies collection.

Since we have quite a few of them, I suggest that we apply for a sub-collection in the Computers & Technology collection. I've read that the usual requirement is for at least twenty videos, and we have quite a few more than that.

This way our videos would be better organized, and have a higher profile to the public.
Who should I contact in WMF for official permission to apply for such a sub-collection?
Thanks
I can't see any way this would harm the work we do, and appears to certainly benefit us. Unless someone can find a compelling reason to go against it, I say, go forward.
