Dear Wikimedians,
We are excited to announce that Wikimedia Deutschland (WMDE) has a new
strategic direction until 2030[1]! It was approved by WMDE’s General
Assembly in June 2023 and describes Wikimedia Deutschland's part in
implementing the global Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2030[2]. Developing
this strategic direction, we drew heavily from our Movement Strategy,
WMDE’s values[3] and the Linked Open Data Strategy[4].
In the introduction of the strategic direction, we describe WMDE’s role,
commitment and responsibilities. Additionally, Wikimedia Deutschland
commits to the following five strategic priorities until 2030:
-
Strong infrastructure of free knowledge
-
Thriving and stable communities
-
Greater diversity and equitable participation
-
More usage, easier access
-
Wider political and social support
The two pillars of the Movement Strategy, Knowledge as a Service and
Knowledge Equity, are integrated in different parts of WMDE’s strategic
direction[5] and were integral to its development. The strategic direction
was developed in a participatory process in 2022–23 and intends to provide
orientation for the work and decisions of the Wikimedia Deutschland
Supervisory Board, Executive Board and staff.
We would like to give a big shout out to all the affiliates and people at
the Wikimedia Foundation who supported us with ideas and input in this
process and those among you from different Wikimedia projects that
participated in our discussions.
You can read the full article about the process and content of our
strategic direction 2030 on the Diff blog [6].
We are now already well underway in taking the next steps with this
strategic direction by formulating more concrete, measurable strategic
goals for the aforementioned strategic priorities. Looking forward to
reporting back once we have taken this next step!
Cheers,
Julia Kirchner (WMDE)

Hey there everyone!
We're thrilled to share that as part of IYD23
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Event:International_Youth_Day_2023>we are
awarding the youth barstars
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WikiVibrance_Barnstar.svg> to the
youth champs in our movement. This year, we're shining the spotlight on
those who are consistently supporting and guiding the youth in our journey,
as well as those amazing young individuals who are setting the inspiration
bar sky-high with their outstanding contributions.
Ever had that one person who's been your rock, guiding you whenever you
needed a helping hand? Now's your chance to show them some love with a
well-deserved Barnster nomination! Also, if there's a youth out there who's
been rocking it with their inspiring work, nominate them too!!
To nominate for the youth Barnstar, go to the link and add the name:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/International_Youth_Day_2023/Nomination
We get it, these barstars might not change the world, but we're pretty darn
sure they'll give a fantastic boost to the incredible work these folks are
doing. Let's spread the good vibes and honour the people making a
difference!
Kind regards,
Wasi

Hi everyone,
I am one of the Central Notice banner admins that create our banners on the
Wikimedia projects that inform you about for instance the Wikimedia Sound
logo contest, Wikimania or at the moment the consultation round for the
Movement Charter drafts.
As you may not be aware, for these kinds of global banners where we ask for
community members to help with the availability of languages (the "[Help
with translations!]" text at the bottom), all incoming translated messages
need to be manually set to live by a Steward, CN admin, or Meta translation
admin - and we don't have too many of these.
From my own experience, this can be a long and intensive process because I
don't speak all of our languages and Google and Yandex don't know several
of them either.
With 60-80 translations per global banner, it is a lot of work to check
sentence by sentence if the proposed text (and also the corrections that
may come in at a later moment) makes sense. To make this process easier and
more equitable for both sides (CN admins/stewards and community members) I
created this feature request on Phabricator
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T341414>, to hopefully put more power to
the community in this process.
If you have additional thoughts on this, please add them to the request on
Phabricator.
Best,
Ciell
