Dear Wikimedians,
this is to let you know we've added Wikimedia Poland's 2019 report to Meta,
and you can read it at:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Polska/Reports/2019
For ease of reading and a richer experience ;) I suggest looking at the PDF
version, available at:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikimedia/pl/d/db/Wikimedia_Poland_Annual_Boar…
*Highlights of 2019 at Wikimedia Poland*
- hosted 3 major community events, including a conference focused solely
on Polish Wikisource and Wiktionary, which animated those smaller
communities (steal this idea!),
- started a new set of initiatives around Education with the hiring of
Klara Sielicka-Baryłka (our first employee dedicated to work in the
education sector),
- created a 3-year strategic development plan for the organization
(more on this in our 2020 report),
- kicked off transformation of management practices and internal process
revamp with the hiring of Łukasz Garczewski as Chief Operating Officer (our
first full-time manager).
*About this report*
The report is a translation of a portion of the board's report to Wikimedia
Poland's Annual General Meeting, approved by members in June 2020.
Due to COVID restrictions we've had to move our AGM to June and hold it
on-line (also a first for us).
The report was submitted to WMF's Grantmaking team back in June, but not
added to Meta until now.
If you have any questions, please let us know by replying to this email.
And since New Year's Even is just days away – here's to a great 2021.
Wherever you are, we hope you raise a glass to another 12 years of building
the sum of human knowledge. ;)

Dear Friends,
The year 2020 is full of woes and wonders. Just before the ending of 2020,
Bengali Wikipedia[1][2] has passed a significant milestone of passing 100K
articles.
Bengali, an Indo-Aryan language and lingua-franca of the Bengal region of
South Asia, is the fifth most-spoken native language and the seventh
most-spoken language by the total number of speakers in the world.[3] The
Bengali Wikipedia Project launched on 27 January 2004 with very few
editors. On 25 December 2020, after 16 years of the initial launch, it now
has passed the milestone of 100k+ articles.[4]
As most of the contributors of Bengali Wikipedia are young and this year's
long lockdowns and campus shutdowns of educational institutes, Wikipedians
had managed to utilized their extra free times by contributing to the
Bengali Wikipedia and it has enjoyed growth at an almost double rate than
the previous year with an organized approach of topic-based consecutive
edit-a-thons.
Here is a quick overview of the milestones achieved -
27 January 2004: Launch of Bengali Wikipedia
September 2006: 10K articles
28 June 2009: 20K articles
13 May 2014: 30K articles
04 January 2016: 40K articles
30 April 2017: 50K articles
08 August 2018: 60K articles
16 July 2019: 70K articles
23 January 2020: 80K articles
22 June 2020: 90K articles
25 December 2020: 100K articles
I welcome you to congratulate the Bengali Wikipedia community for their
achievement and wishing them all the best for future progress and
prosperity.

Hello everyone,
We are excited to announce that submission for session proposals has been
opened for Wikimedia Wikimeet India 2021, the upcoming online wiki-event
which is to be conducted from 19 – 21 February 2021 during the occasion of
International Mother Language Day. The submission will remain open until 24
January 2021.
You can submit your session proposals here -
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Wikimeet_India_2021/Submissions
A program team has been formed recently from highly experienced Wikimedia
volunteers within and outside India. It is currently under the process of
expansion to include more diversity in the team. The team will evaluate the
submissions, accept, modify or reject them, design and finalise the program
schedule by the end of January 2021. Details about the team will come soon.
*Guidelines for submissions:*
* The sessions will be on any Wikimedia related topics.
* Submissions are not restricted to India. Wikimedians from outside India
are also welcome to submit proposals.
* The decision to accept or reject a submission will depend on the Program
Team. Their decision will be final.
* The event will have different formats of sessions, like presentations,
workshops, panel discussions and 5-minutes lightning talks.
* All sessions will be conducted online.
* The organisers will provide the support to help the presenter understand
the use of online platforms like Zoom etc prior to the event..
* The organisers will also communicate with the presenter prior to the
event to help understand the entire process, or for general preparation.
* A session can be around 20 minutes long or more. A lightning talk should
be no longer than 5 minutes.
* There can be more than one presenter in one session. Feel free to make a
group for your session.
* The presenters for long duration sessions must ensure that they will be
available for the preparation and during their sessions.
* The presenters for lightning talks however can pre-record their sessions
earlier, if they want and send it to the organizers to play the recording
during their allotted time.
* A session will be conducted in English or any Indian language.
* Similar topics may be grouped together, or format may be changed by the
program team. The program team will contact the session presenters if those
decisions are taken.
We are sure that you will share some of your most inspiring stories and
conduct some really exciting sessions during the event. Best of luck for
your submissions!

Hello Wikimedians,
I’m writing to announce the next opportunity for funding through the
Project Grants program, and to share changes in how review will happen in
the coming year and beyond.
Background context:
Over the past few months, the Wikimedia Foundation has begun work on a new
strategy for how we will structure our grants programs in the future, with
the goal of aligning more closely with the Wikimedia Movement’s 2030
Strategic Direction [1]. We’ve been having conversations with many
stakeholders in the Wikimedia community and we’re in the process of
brainstorming about possible frameworks to improve how we make grants. This
coming year, 2021, will be an experimental year in which we will pilot some
smaller changes as we move toward a larger redesign process later in the
year and beyond.
How do I learn more about applying for project funding through Project
Grants?
-
You can learn more about the guidelines for the Project Grants program
here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Learn
-
You can learn more about how to plan for a project proposal here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Plan
-
You can learn about how to apply here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Apply
What will change in the grant review process for Project Grants in 2021?
-
In previous rounds, all Project Grant proposals have been reviewed in
one round, inclusive of proposals related to four themes: research,
software, and online and offline community organizing. In 2021, we will
experiment with offering two separate and dedicated rounds. One will be
focused on online and offline community organizing. A second round will
focus on review of research and software grant proposals.
-
By offering separate, dedicated rounds, we hope to offer more tailored
support for applicants, with better integration with staff in the Wikimedia
Foundation who have relevant expertise, and with more focused Committee
recruitment to improve the quality of proposal review. We also hope it will
reduce the burden on volunteer committee reviewers in any given round.
When will community organizing grant proposals be accepted?
-
The open call will launch January 11, and the submission deadline is
February 10, 2021.
-
The full schedule is posted here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project
When will software and research grant proposals be accepted in 2021?
-
The open call will launch February 15, and the submission deadline is
March 16, 2021.
-
The full schedule is posted here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project
How will this affect currently funded Project Grants?
-
Our intention is to make sure that current projects will not be
interrupted by this change, both with regard to current or planned work.
Will there be other changes coming in the future?
-
After these rounds, we expect bigger changes for Project Grants.
-
We are currently in a strategic design process and have been actively
engaging many stakeholders from around the world to help us think about
what these changes should look like.
-
Once we have draft frameworks ready, there will be opportunities for
feedback from Wikimedia community members before any decisions are
finalized. We will keep you updated!
Please let us know if you have any questions about these changes or if you
would like to learn more about how to get involved in the strategic
redesign process for Project Grants.
Warm regards,
Marti

She/Her
Hello.
My name is Maggie Dennis. I’m the Vice President of Community Resilience
and Sustainability at the Wikimedia Foundation.[1] I oversee the
Foundation’s Trust and Safety teams (operations and policy), the Community
Development team, and the upcoming Foundation Human Rights lead.
On December 2nd, I met with representatives of the Wikimedia LGBT+ User
Group along with several Trust and Safety personnel, including Global Head
Jan Eißfeldt, to understand some of the challenges faced by the members of
the group as volunteers in our international movement.[2] It is apparent
that many volunteers openly identifying as LGBTQIA+ are targeted and
attacked for their identities, with transgender, non-binary, queer, and
queer feminist editors in particular at higher risk for such abuse. The
members of the group who met with us voiced concerns about the safety and
wellbeing of other marginalized communities and groups as well.
In my role, and speaking for the Foundation, I am writing today to restate,
reinforce, and firmly assert our commitment to supporting the LGBTQIA+
volunteers in our movement, as well as others who face exclusion and
hostility on the basis of identity factors.[3]
The Wikimedia movement is based on the value of inclusivity, that anyone
may play a part in not only receiving but curating and sharing knowledge.
What volunteers have been able to accomplish in Wikimedia projects is
extraordinary, but the movement will never reach its full potential if we
do not close the diversity gap which our communities defined so ably in the
Movement Strategy process.[4] There continue to be barriers in our movement
for LGBTQIA+, women, indigenous communities, and other underrepresented
groups. We as a movement have been called upon by a broad and diverse group
of our own movement members to promote inclusivity and reduce harms to our
participants.
In light of this, one of my teams has been directed by the Board of
Trustees to (among other requests) facilitate the drafting of the Universal
Code of Conduct called for in the Movement Strategy recommendations.[5]
This collaboratively drafted document underwent significant community
review in September and October and is currently under review by the Board.
We will next be launching a second phase of that work in January, meant to
result in enforcement pathways that will make our projects safe spaces for
all volunteers.
Following the LGBT+ User Group meeting, we are also building into our plans
facilitated support for the LGBT+ User Group and other Wikimedia affiliate
organizations focused on marginalized communities to come together to
discuss better mechanisms for supporting volunteers who are targeted on the
basis of sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, ethnicity or other
identify factors. We expect to solidify plans and launch conversations in
January and will be putting out information on how to participate.
In addition, we see the urgency and the opportunity to do more to address
the needs of the LGBT+ User Group and others. The Foundation’s Community
Resilience & Sustainability function will be connecting more closely with
the LGBT+ User Group going forward to ensure that the Foundation’s staff
better understand the needs of this community, especially but not solely in
our professional Trust & Safety work.
We are committed to supporting volunteers in participating safely in our
movement and want to be sure that we do not, through lack of understanding,
ourselves do harm. This includes:
-
adopting and disseminating to staff best-practice terminology when
conducting community surveys,
-
ensuring that volunteers have easier access to existing reporting
structures now, even as we build other enforcement pathways in the UCoC,
-
being vigilant that incidents where individuals are targeted for
identity factors are properly recognized and addressed in our Trust &
Safety systems, and
-
exploring peer support options.
I thank the members of the user group for inviting us to join them. I’m
excited and energized by that conversation and looking forward to finding
ways to improve. I hope others in the community will join in the publicly
hosted UCoC discussions starting early in the new year to improve the
safety of all community members. It will help to ensure that volunteers
across the movement, and in all movement spaces online and off, have an
opportunity to contribute safely. People should feel welcomed to contribute
to our collective and important mission of delivering the sum of all
knowledge to everyone.
Warm regards,
Maggie Dennis

Hi!
2020 is slowly drawing to a close. When we have now summarized the WikiGap
Campaign in 2020, we see that – despite the ongoing pandemic! – you guys
have gathered almost 1,500 editors, and 250 new ones, to edit 19,000
articles and create almost 2,000 new ones about women! The almost 30,000
edits (!) have been viewed by just short than 45 million times in 2020
alone. Several affiliates have held their first events, and we are happy to
see that more and more people and organizations are interested in joining
the campaign. We are, as always, completely astonished! Well done, all
WikiGap organizers.
WikiGap <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap> is an annual campaign
starting with the International Women’s Day in March, to bridge the gender
gap on Wikipedia. It is co-organized by Wikimedia Sverige, the Swedish
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Swedish embassies across the world, Wikimedia
affiliates, and potentially other partners.
With this email, we also want to announce that we are beginning
preparations for the WikiGap Campaign in 2021. The world looks nothing like
what we are used to, and we will do our best as global coordinators to find
a model that can work for both digital and physical events.
If you want to organize a WikiGap event in 2021, feel free to reach out to
us! We will happily help you with the next steps. If you already have
decided that you want to take part, you can list your event here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap/2021/Events
We also plan to experiment with international partnerships and new concepts
for international coordination next year. Stay tuned!
In the meanwhile, we wish you happy holidays, a Merry Christmas for those
who celebrate, and a happy new year.
Best
