Hello all,
As previously announced, the WikidataCon 2021
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikidataCon_2021> will take place
in October next year, in a distributed hybrid format: most of the contents
will be spread online, while user groups may be able to organize local
events, depending on the situation in their region.
We’re very happy to announce that after discussing with several
organizations who were particularly involved with Wikidata events in the
past, we partnered up with Wiki Movimento Brasil to support the
organization of the conference.
You may already have heard of the awesome series of events Wikidata Labs
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Wikidata_Labs> organized by Wiki
Movimento Brasil
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Movement_Brazil_User_Group>. They are
also involved in several other Wikidata-related projects, building
partnerships with GLAM organizations and supporting the community in
Brazil. By working together, we will ensure that the program includes a
great diversity of speakers and we will prepare a physical event to gather
the Wikidata community in Brazil.
The selection process for the partner location included a pre-selection of
several organizations in countries outside of Europe and North America, and
took in account several criteria, focussing on the past experiences in
organizing events, the reliability and sustainability of the group, as well
as various practical considerations. Part of the WikidataCon budget
provided by Wikimedia Germany will be used to support events in Brazil and
including participants from this country. If you’re interested in knowing
more about the process, feel free to contact me, I’ll gladly give more
details.
Of course, the participation of other chapters, user groups and local
Wikidata communities is still very welcome: in the next few months, I’ll
share more information about how local groups can be involved in running
side events or participate in the program design.
Frequent updates about the conference and further announcements will take
place on wiki <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikidataCon_2021>.
The talk page is the best place to ask questions and discuss about the
organization of the conference.
You can also contact me at any time if you have questions or suggestions
about the WikidataCon 2021.
We’re very excited to work hand in hand with Wiki Movimento Brasil and to
experiment with the new hybrid format of the conference together!
Thanks for your attention,

Hi everyone,
Close to 250 people participated in virtual Global Conversations that took
place on November 21 and 22. The discussion continues on December 5 and 6
and we warmly invite you to take part. Registration is open until December
4. [1]
What happened already
Nearly 50 communities and affiliates shared their priorities in advance and
can continue to do so. [2] Based on those priorities, the first set of
events on Nov. 21+22 took discussions further by asking Wikimedians from
around the world which of the 45 Movement Strategy initiatives are most
important to globally coordinate and start implementing in 2021. For some
of the initiatives, implementation means further discussions and scoping.
Take a look at the results. [3] What do you think about the priorities?
What is missing? What would make you want to play an active role in
implementation?
Coordination will vary from one initiative to another. Some can be
implemented on their own, some will involve diverse communities and
affiliates of different sizes working together, and others may require
support from the Wikimedia Foundation.
What happens next
During the next set of discussions on December 5 and 6, we will focus on
the top global priorities and start discussing what implementation can
actually look like. What are the steps needed to put Strategy into action?
Everyone’s invited to help enrich these conversations. Since implementation
will be different from one context to another, we need as many voices as
possible included to create a movement-wide implementation plan.
Based on the feedback, we would like to continue the great momentum of the
first set of events and will provide social opportunities for Wikimedians
to connect. We will also provide space to hold short lightning talks [4] on
how to implement certain initiatives. If you have ideas, please share them
with others.
If you are unable to attend, we will share the results and raw data on Meta
so we can still benefit from your input.
What is provided
As for the first set of events, we will provide live interpretation in
Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Russian, and Spanish. In the
registration form, please let us know if you require language support as
well as internet data package upgrade or childcare for the duration of the
event.
Familiarize yourself with the initiatives already prioritized, register
early, and continue the conversation on December 5 and 6. See you there.
On behalf of the Support Team,
Kaarel

Hi folks,
What are our best resources to point to our need for open access research?
I'm looking for explanations, testimonials, collections of research on how
OA is used on Wikipedia (e.g. Teplitskiy, Lu, Duede: “Amplifying the impact
of open access: Wikipedia and the diffusion of science”) and so on –
anything to not have to reinvent the wheel. Have you put together anything
explaining this from a Wikimedia perspective?
(The Wikipedia Library has "why we need access to research", which is
useful, but not exactly the same thing.)

Last Saturday, Wikimedia Canada held its Annual General Meeting. Thanks to
all the members who participated. We are welcoming two new Board members:
Catherine Bernier, involved with the GLAM-Wiki projects with Bibliothèque
et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ), and Thérèse Ottawa, referent of
the WikiClub Metapeckeka (the WikiClub of the Atikamekw Community of

Ha-Loan Phan, and Michael David Miller were re-elected to the Board.
Wikimedia Canada is proud that its Board of Directors is still composed of
a majority of women and to welcome a member of the Atikamekw First Nation
as a director, as well as maintaining a representation from the LGBTQ+
community. We are sure that this will help us to continue and further our
efforts in terms of inclusiveness and diversity.

Hey Everyone,
Since the pandemic started the fundraising team has been working flat out
to ensure the Wikimedia movement has the financial resources to continue
with its work. We planned one of the busiest summers we had ever faced and
that put the movement in a good place. Even with that work, the end of year
fundraising in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the USA and the
United Kingdom remains critically important. Approximately half of the
annual funds for the Wikimedia movement are raised in the final quarter of
the year.
Due to the pandemic and its impacts on people's lives, our team's capacity
was also reduced and so we factored in more time into our work. This year
we kicked off our E-mail fundraising programme in these countries earlier
in September. This programme focuses on asking previous donors to reaffirm
their support to Wikimedia and our English campaign will continue steadily
through the rest of this calendar year.
The key to growing our donor base is our fundraising banner campaigns but
at the same time we try to keep the disruption these campaigns cause to a
minimum. We don’t fundraise year round and generally we are fundraising for
around one month in any country. As for other campaigns, we test in advance
to stress test our systems, explore new ideas, and improve workflows etc.
all in time for the busiest period of the year. This year we will be
looking to begin the main campaign Nov30/Dec1 Tuesday, December 1. We will
look to fundraise through the month of December.
Our content evolves every year and all the feedback we get from community
members, donors and social media feeds directly into our testing programme.
We’ll also be proactively following up with ways for community members to
propose test ideas for our messaging.
There are a number of ways you can report issues. For the non-urgent
feedback, you can email directly to seddon {{at}} wikimedia.org. If you
prefer real time you’ll find me on #wikipedia-en on IRC, the Wikimedia
General Chat on telegram and in the English Discord server.
If you see any technical issues with the banners or payments systems please
do report it on phabricator:
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/task/create/?template=118862
If you see a donor on a talk page, OTRS, or social media with questions
about donating or having difficulties in the donation process, please refer
them to: donate {{at}} wikimedia.org.
Here is also the fundraising IRC channel where you can raise urgent
technical issues: #wikimedia-fundraising (
http://webchat.freenode.net?channels=%23wikimedia-fundraising&uio=d4)
>From myself and on behalf of my colleagues, can I thank everyone for the
patience and support fundraising is given from across the movement both
throughout the year and especially over the coming weeks.

Hello Everyone,
In September we asked for your participation in a pilot office hour series
which would take place over the last 3 months. December marks the end of
our pilot: we are organizing Campaign office hours to experiment with a new
communication channel about campaign practices in the movement.
The next pilot office hour will be on 2nd December at 3:00pm UTC via the
zoom link.[1] The session will focus on: Sharing lessons and strategies
from 1lib1ref, and our growth strategy in CEE for January and discussions
on the way forward for the campaign's office hour and other communication
opportunities around campaigns.
Don’t miss our last of the pilot series: we want to learn about your
questions, experiences, new ideas for content campaigns and the way to
further engage and provide support to your communities.
After the office hour, we will be evaluating our office hours, and will
reach out to learn more from your priorities about campaign communications.
Looking forward to learning, discussing and sharing with you!
Best,
Felix Nartey

Join Wikimedia UK and Katherine Maher for a community discussion on our
priorities for 2021
Tuesday 17th November from 5 to 7pm UTC
In 2017 the Wikimedia Foundation facilitated the creation of a strategic
direction
<http://kiskeacity.bmetrack.com/c/l?u=B2712F1&e=113E0B7&c=77108&t=0&l=1320A9…>
to guide the global Wikimedia movement into the future. The goal is that by
2030, Wikimedia will become the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem
of free knowledge, and anyone who shares our vision will be able to join.
Over the past three years, people from across the global Wikimedia movement
have come together to discuss how we can work towards this. The result is a
set of underlying principles and ten recommendations, each with
accompanying initiatives and actions.
We are now in a transitional stage between the creation of the strategy and
its implementation. This is a crucial moment to explore how the English
language community can contribute to the implementation of the strategy,
and have a say in how the recommendations are prioritised.
Inspired by the Movement Strategy's 10-year vision, Wikimedia UK would like
to hear from volunteers based anywhere in the world who contribute to
English Wikipedia about where the movement should focus its efforts in
2021.
The meeting will be held over Zoom on Tuesday 17th November from 5 to 7pm
UTC. We will be joined by a number of Wikimedia Foundation staff members
including:
Katherine Maher, Executive Director/CEO
Ryan Merkley, Chief of Staff
Mehrdad Pourzaki, Community Relations and Communications, Movement Strategy
Kaarel Vaidla, Lead Movement Process Architect
Please sign up to the event through this Google Form
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf6h49tEmEMGBwa4EIcPGmw6j3aGNeXWh2…>
(or email me, if you would prefer). The zoom link will be sent out in
advance of the call. In the meantime you can find out more about the
movement strategy and the ten recommendations here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Recomme…>
.
I look forward to seeing many of you at the meeting!
With best wishes
Lucy
