In 2019 Wikimedia Israel (WMIL) decided to develop instructional material
for the Wikidata Query Service (WDQS). The background for this decision was
that we see audiences to whom we introduce Wikidata become especially
enthusiastic when we present the *Wikidata query service tutorial
<https://wdqs-tutorial.toolforge.org/> *, which offers quite a
unique feature within the landscape of information services available
today. This enthusiasm often dampens when audiences discover that querying
is not done using natural language but rather requires learning SPARQL.
We believe learning SPARQL is not rocket science, even for audiences with
no programming background. We created a step-by-step tutorial website to
give users an introduction and some basic lessons on how to use the query
service. While WDQS has a great Help section, this section might not be so
helpful to users who are new to Wikimedia platforms. We therefore built the
tutorial website on the WordPress platform which has a more familiar design
to most users. We believe this website will make the WDQS more accessible,
and hope this will be a way to expand Wikidata to new audiences.
Currently the site is in English but we are open for collaborations to add
the tutorial in other languages.
We are also keen to hear feedback from those involved in Wikidata Outreach.

I am Maggie Dennis, Vice President of Community Resilience &
Sustainability, working directly under the General Counsel of the Wikimedia
Foundation.[1] I've served in various roles at the Foundation over the past
9 years, always in and about the Trust & Safety team. I'm also a volunteer
— Moonriddengirl — editing mostly on the English Wikipedia (though much
less than in the past).
Back in June, we held the first of a series of quarterly office hours which
were intended to provide a space for folks to talk to me directly about
issues involving "community resilience and sustainability", which includes
the Trust & Safety team's activity as well as initiatives such as the
Universal Code of Conduct and the Human Rights role for which we’re

As with last time, in order to meet the request of some to make these
meetings more personal, we're going to again host the meeting on Zoom,
taking questions from the Zoom chat, Telegram, and IRC, as well as
collecting them in advance over email.[3] The meeting will also be streamed
to YouTube, since we will only be able to host a limited number of people
in the Zoom itself, and this recording will be available to watch after
we're done.
As with last time around, finding one hour that works for everyone is going
to be really difficult, though we will once again be taking detailed
(anonymized) notes from the call which we'll be posting onto Meta-Wiki.
I'll be fielding questions from Wikimedians in good standing (that is, not
Foundation or community banned), and will follow up with anything asked
during or prior to the meeting that I can't get to during the meeting in
writing after the call.
The caveats from before remain in place, which I will repeat for
convenience:

I can't and won't discuss specific Trust & Safety cases. Instead, I can
discuss Trust & Safety protocols and practices and approaches as well as
some of the mistakes we've made, some of the things I'm proud of, and some
of the things we're hoping to do.

I will not respond to comments or questions that are disrespectful to
me, to my colleagues, or to anyone in our communities. I can talk civilly
about our work even if you disagree with me or I disagree with you. I won't
compromise on this.
I'm still not sure if Zoom is a permanent solution for these office hours,
though it has in the past been a good option to provide both text and audio
options for those who are interested in contributing. It's also software
that the Foundation's IT folks are familiar with and can help with in a
pinch should we run into any turbulence. :)
We don't yet have direct links set up for the call — those will be provided
when they are available. If you want the link to get in, please ask for it
at answers(a)wikimedia.org, at least an hour in advance of the meeting's
start (please use "Trust & Safety" as the subject line - it’s quicker and
easier to remember than Community Resilience & Sustainability). The link

Поэтому, команда по развитию сообществ (Community Development team) Фонда
Викимедиа экспериментирует с открытыми видеозвонками (используя Google

После каждого звонка мы составляем краткое *резюме*, в котором описываются
все темы и включаются ссылки на все инструменты и ресурсы, упомянутые во
время звонка. Резюме доступно всем заинтересованным волонтерам и будет

Эти звонки *не* заменяет существующие каналы или звонки! Все они продолжают

The Wikimedia Foundation <https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/> tests the
switch between its first and secondary data centers. This will make sure
that Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia wikis can stay online even after a
disaster. To make sure everything is working, the Wikimedia Technology
department needs to do a planned test. This test will show if they can
reliably switch from one datacenter to the other. It requires many teams to
prepare for the test and to be available to fix any unexpected problems.
They will switch all traffic back to the primary data center on *Tuesday,
October 27 2020*.
Unfortunately, because of some limitations in MediaWiki
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:What_is_MediaWiki%3F>, all editing
must stop while the switch is made. We apologize for this disruption, and
we are working to minimize it in the future.
*You will be able to read, but not edit, all wikis for a short period of
time.*
- You will not be able to edit for up to an hour on Tuesday, October 27.

- Background jobs will be slower and some may be dropped. Red links
might not be updated as quickly as normal. If you create an article that is
already linked somewhere else, the link will stay red longer than usual.
Some long-running scripts will have to be stopped.
- There will be code freezes for the week of October 26, 2020.
Non-essential code deployments will not happen.

CEE Talks are open virtual discussions on topics of interest for
Wikimedians from Central and Eastern Europe with the goal of more efficient
and transparent decision-making and call for action. The initiative is a
very good opportunity to continue the intense and never-ending discussions
at conferences and animate the CEE communities to be more active while
online. The first CEE Talk

I'm very happy to announce that the Affiliations Committee has recognized
[1] Kurdish Wikimedians User Group [2] as a Wikimedia User Group. The group
aims to increase the Kurdish presence on the Wikimedia projects; by helping
contributors from all Kurdish Wikimedia projects to organize and
collaborate. Also by promoting the use of Kurdish languages and dialects by
organizing events both online and in-person. They also want to help the
world to get to know more about the Kurds and strengthen their connections
