Hello,
I thought I would ask if any of the junior or senior researchers here on
this mailing list have conducted previous inquiries into Wikipedia's
sourcing.
I am currently working on a project of determining what proportion of
Wikipedia is sourced to newspapers, the military, the Church, social
media, etc.
The data I've compiled this month, along with a brief write-up, have
been posted to Wikipediocracy:
http://wikipediocracy.com/2018/08/26/wikipedia-sources-methods/
I imagine I'm reinventing the wheel... such studies have been done
before, by the WMF, with power tools (bots), right?
Thanks for any corrections / suggestions,
sashi
The Foundation has been accepting BitCoin donations. Unfortunately,
BitCoin is very wasteful in terms of electricity, and is therefore a
dirty cryptocurrency.
I recommend that the Foundation immediately cease accepting BitCoin,
and require donors who wish to donate in cryptocurrency to convert to
FoldingCoin instead. Please see: FoldingCoin (FLDC)
http://foldingcoin.net/ whitepaper:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1y4MV9AwGLTRFqD-kjC4uN0AX59kHOpO1OWsabnx…
This conversion will place the Foundation at the forefront of
cryptocurrency technology, and stop it from contributing to extremely
dirty waste. As other cryptocurrencies based on proofs of useful work
instead of useless work emerge, the Foundation should consider those.
FoldingCoin is based on proofs of useful prediction of protein
folding, which is useful for computer-aided antibody design, and used
in turn for cancer therapies and many other applied and research
medical fields.
I also invite anyone in the community interested in co-authoring my
forthcoming derivative whitepaper on proofs of useful intelligibility
remediation work to contact me off-list, please. I am also willing to
help with proofs of useful encyclopedia article improvement, but I am
not certain if ORES is yet robust enough to support such proof in a
secure fashion.
Best regards,
Jim Salsman
Hi all,
In preparation for the upcoming Wikimedia Conference 2019 – which will take
place from March 29 to March 31 in Berlin, Germany[1] – we again launch a
call for a “Visiting Wikimedian”. This initiative aims to transfer
practical knowledge from the German chapter to other Wikimedia movement
affiliates and provides us with an outside view.
The scope of a “Visiting Wikimedian” is mainly to support the organization
of the Wikimedia Conference in terms of logistics and program. The “Visiting
Wikimedian” will be involved in all essential steps of the planning and
organizing process and will be able to contribute in multiple ways. We are
open to designing the tasks together, according to the Visiting Wikimedian’s
skills and experiences and her or his affiliate’s needs. We are especially
looking for a person who can apply the knowledge to an upcoming event, for
example if the affiliate is hosting a regional or international conference.
You can find more information about the initiative and all application
details on Meta.[2] We had three Visiting Wikimedians over the last years,
check also their blost posts on the linked on the Meta page.
If you are interested in becoming a Visiting Wikimedian, please check the
conditions and details on Meta and apply to wmcon(a)wikimedia.de until
September 19, 2019 (incl).
Best regards,
Cornelius

Hello,
The Security team will be putting together a brief summary of events
for both of these incidents and plan on sharing an overview by Sept
7th.

*Hi everybody and sorry for crossposting,Wikimedia Sverige is proud to be
the recipient of $65,500 in support from the Swedish National Library for
our project Library Data.We will work in collaboration with the Swedish
National Library to include a number of datasets onto Wikidata, such as
data about authors, libraries and different special databases of
bibliographies[1]. This is a pilot project where we aim to discuss with the
community what to include and what to exclude. Based on the discussions and
the requests from the community we will design a continuation of this
project (if this first part is deemed successful continuous funding is
possible for 3-4 more years). We started investigating a possible long term
partnership with the National Library in 2017 when Wikimedia Sverige
delivered inputs to the new National Strategy for the Library Sector on how
Sweden's libraries can work with Wikimedia for mutual benefits.[2] The
National Library has just made history as the world's first national
library to fully transition to Linked Open Data (BIBFRAME 2.0),[3] so the
timing could not have been better; we are now in position to examine how
this move can benefit Wikidata and other Wikimedia projects. Please contact
the project manager André Costa (andre.costa(a)wikimedia.se
<andre.costa(a)wikimedia.se>) or the developer Alicia Fagerving
(alicia.fagerving(a)wikimedia.se <alicia.fagerving(a)wikimedia.se>) if you have
any questions. As always, you can find the full application on our wiki (in
