Dear all,
As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees has two
appointed Board members whose terms will expire during Wikimania 2018 -
Kelly Battles and Alice Wiegand. We have been working to fill those seats
and our goal is for potential candidates to join us in Cape Town during
Wikimania 2018.
== Finance expert seat ==
This is a very specific profile: we need a person with strong financial
management background and auditing skills. The BCG (Board Governance
Committee) is currently interviewing a short list of candidates prepared by
Kelly Battles and Jaime Villagomez (the CFO of Wikimedia Foundation). Once
interviews are complete, the BCG will send their recommendations to the
full Board.
== Technology/organizational growth expert seat ==
Over the last few months, we have conducted a series of conversations on
Board expertise needs. With the support of Katherine Maher (ED) and Josh
Weinberg (Chief of Staff), the BGC developed a candidate profile for the
soon-to-be-vacant seat and gave its recommendation to the Board during
their meeting in Berlin. We need your help to identify potential candidates
for this position who are interested in serving the Wikimedia community as
a member of the Board of Trustees.
We shall begin accepting applications and referrals for these positions
today. A more detailed timeline of the full recruitment process is
available on Meta here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/?curid=10176203 [1]. You
can find the candidate package here [2].
Applicants may apply online at:
https://boards.greenhouse.io/wikimedia/jobs/1162305?gh_src=8b8yun5r1#.WvaOK….
We will also accept applications and referrals by email at
board-nominations(a)lists.wikimedia.org.
We look forward to hearing from you.

About one and a half years ago, there was a consultation process about
updating the Wikimedia Terms of Use to move from CC 3.0 to 4.0 licenses.

I would like to ask what the status of this proposal is, and whom to bother
to get this unstuck in case it is stuck.
Cheers,

Good day,
Is there a list somewhere of countries or sub-national governments that
publish the works of their employees in the public domain?

Hello all!
Hope this email finds you well. We are sending this message to select
community mailing lists and all previous recipients of a Wikimedia
Foundation Rapid Grant.
We have an announcement regarding the closure of the Rapid Grants [1]
program between May 14 - June 30, 2018. This year we've received a lot of
interest in the program and this quarter we've almost doubled the amount of
grants offered to the community compared to last year's quarter. You can
look at our spending analysis
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Resources/Grants_spending_analysis>
[2] for
reference. Unfortunately, this means we've expended our funds for this
fiscal year. The last date we will be receiving an application for a rapid
grant before the closure will be *Friday, May 11, 2018*.
We encourage *Wiki Loves Earth* participants to apply for a Rapid Grant by
May 11, 2018 to receive support for their project.
The grant program will be open again to receive grant requests starting *July
1, 2018*. At this point we will be implementing the following changes:
1. There will be a minimum of *$500 USD* for grant requests
2. Applications will only be accepted between the *1st - 15th of each month*.
This is to help with our current workflow and to allow us to be more
responsive to your requests.
If you have any questions, please email us at rapidgrants(a)wikimedia.org.
Best regards,
Woubzena

Thanks, John.
Fae, I suggest that we let the WMF folks who are working on this issue extinguish the current fire before asking them to write a report about a previous one.
I agree that the report about the previous incident is overdue. Perhaps as the current situation becomes calmer (updated metrics and news would be nice to have on the public Phab tickets) some staff can be moved off of the front line and back to the archives.

Hello Everyone,
I am glad to share a recent collaboration of Odia Wikipedia community with
the Government of Odisha.
After releasing the content of 2017 Asian Athletics Championships (
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/07/28/digest-asia-athletics-championships/
) another initiative by the Government of Odisha to bridge the dearth of
Information about Odisha on Wikipedia by releasing its social media
accounts under CC-BY 4.0.
Earlier this week, the community members met the Government officials
regarding this, and after understanding the value of Open Content, it took
only 24hrs to release the social media channels under CC-BY 4.0 license.
As a pilot project, 8 social media accounts from Government of Odisha are
under CC-BY 4.0,Now, the content is free for everyone to use, share, and
build upon their work.
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/09/18/odisha-social-media-free-license/
The community is also planning to take the collaboration further and
relicense some of the websites under CC-BY 4.0.

Dear all,
on April 7th, Wikimedia Italia held its general assembly, where a new board
has been elected. It is composed as follows:
* Lorenzo Losa, President
* Valerio Perticone, Vice-president
* Carlo Benini, Secretary
* Saverio G. Malatesta, Treasurer
* Maurizio Napolitano
I wish to thank Federico Leva, Giuseppe Profiti and Paola Liliana
Buttiglione, who ended their term, for their invaluable work in the board.
The general assembly drew a very good participation, with 89 voting members
(the most participated general assembly in the last ten years!), and
unanimously approved the 2017 annual report (currently in Italian only; an
English version is planned).

A few highlights from the 2017 report:
* Two new WIRs have started working at the Ministry of Culture (ICAR and
ICBSA). Some portals of the central archives administration have already
adopted the CC-BY-SA-4.0 license as well as the public domain charter! For
more links see:
<https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedian_in_Residence>
* We got more than 3.000 researchers to archive their articles in green
open access (in just two months!):
<
https://blog.okfn.org/2017/10/26/how-wikimedia-helped-authors-make-over-300…
>
* OpenStreetMap activities are strengthening, reaching more than double the
people we expected.
>From the structural point of view, since July 2017, after almost a year of
intense discussions with members and staff, we have started implementing
changes while going towards a reduced workload for the board. We have
mutually agreed to part ways with our former ED. Since then, three new
employees have started working with us: Giovanna Ranci, for the education
program; Marta Arosio, for GLAM partnerships; Teresa Scorza, for
administration and bookkeeping.
Looking forward, the 2018 budget and annual plan, written by 37 members and
employees together, is increasing the support for Wikimedia volunteers
(financially and otherwise), while reducing expenses for salaries and
administrative services.
