Fake news

Hi I have been proposed to give a conference about wikipedia and fake news and to focus on very specific examples rather than general concepts. I already have a few ideas but any pointers to particularly interesting cases or discussions will be welcome. Thanks for your help. Florence

P. Sainath's comments on the Wikipedia

In the course of a 2015 talk at Yale, the prominent Indian journalist P. Sainath says (comparing his People's Archive): "We are not the Wikipedia. Just because anyone can contribute does not mean we will accept everything. A lot of democratic decisions are democratically taken by me. Yeah, this is not the Wikipedia. I did not work for 35 years in journalist to put up any crap... with my name going on the credit." This comes up at around minute 49. Please listen. Suspension of FDC grantmaking

Hello, I read in a Facebook discussion about the Wikimedia Conference that the Annual Plan Grants are being paused (or stopped or suspended or something) shortly, presumably after the end of the Round 2 deliberations that are going on. Can't see any information about this on the list, or the Grantmaking team pages. Is this right? If so I wondered what the rationale might be? Thanks! Chris

Submissions will be accepted *till April 30th*, so feel free to start drafting your proposals. Please note that submissions for scholarships <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM_TLV_2018/Scholarships> will open tomorrow via a different process and the actual registration will take place later on in June. How to recognise a Wikipedian

Hi all, During the past Wikimedia Conference and the preceding days, a lot of Wikimedians came together and many of them did not know anyone and where wondering who in the hotel also is a Wikipedian/Wikimedian. To make it easier for users, a page has been published to help them: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/How_to_recognise_a_Wikipedian The page describes what you can look for with the subsequent levels for a higher level of recognisability. Craig Franklin passed away

Hi all, Through various other channels I learned the unfortunate news that Craig Franklin (Lankiveil) has recently passed away. He was a board member (2011-2015) and president (2013) at Wikimedia Australia, longtime English Wikipedian and admin, and until this month he was member of the Ombudsman Commission. Craig was a lively participant in many of our meetings/conferences, and it was always a joy to see him enter a discussion.
