Here's the current version that's going out as of a few minutes ago, may be
useful for adaptation. You probably can't put HTML links in, so maybe paste
some URLs :-)
(Currently trying to find an editor in the UK who can make Newsnight
*tonight*, I can't.)

Hi X,
Thanks for reaching out. We’d be happy to share a comment from the
Wikimedia Foundation on the recent outcome of a discussion among volunteer
editors around the use of the Daily Mail as a reliable source on English
Wikipedia.
One point of clarity -- A number of outlets have called this move a “ban.”
This is not a blanket ban, but a general statement from volunteer editors
on the reliability of the source for use on English Wikipedia.
Also, I should mention that as the nonprofit that supports Wikipedia and
the other Wikimedia projects, the Wikimedia Foundation generally does not
set editorial policy on Wikipedia. That is up to volunteer editors around
the world who contribute to the site.
Editors have discussed the reliability of the Daily Mail since at least
early 2015
<https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Potentially_unreliable…>.
In January 2017, an RfC
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard#Daily_…>
(Request for Comment) discussion was proposed to evaluate the use of the Daily
Mail as a reliable source on English Wikipedia. This is one of many
community discussions that take place every day about a broad range of
issues, including reliable sources.
In this case, volunteer editors seem to have come to a consensus that the Daily
Mail is “generally unreliable and its use as a reference is to be generally
prohibited, especially when other more reliable sources exist.” This means
that there is a general recommendation according to this discussion that
the Daily Mail not be referenced as a "reliable source" on English
Wikipedia or used to demonstrate an article subject’s notability.
That said, I encourage you to read the comments in the RfC
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard#Daily_…>
itself. You will find considerable discussion on the topic, including views
both for and against the proposal. Wikipedia is a living, breathing
ecosystem where volunteers regularly discuss and evolve the norms that
guide the encyclopedia. Among Wikipedia’s many policies and guidelines,
there is even a policy to ignore all rules
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Ignore_all_rules>. It captures the
open spirit of the community: “If a rule
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Policies_and_guidelines> prevents
you from improving or maintaining Wikipedia, ignore it.”
As a general guide to reliable sources, articles on Wikipedia should be
based on reliable, third-party
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Third-party_sources>, published
sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. Editors assess
the reliability of a source at these levels:
-
The piece of work itself (the article, book)
-
The creator of the work (the writer, journalist)
-
The publisher of the work (for example, Random House
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Random_House> or Cambridge University
Press <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambridge_University_Press>)
They also use a variety of criteria to evaluate reliability within each of
these levels. For example, one signal that a news organization engages in
fact-checking and has a reputation for accuracy is the publication of
corrections <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correction_%28newspaper%29>.
Does anyone have a link to the recent Foundation Statement about the Daily
Mail? We are receiving inquires at OTRS, and it would be nice if I see see
our official position.

Hi everyone,
I’m delighted today to share some news about the leadership of the
Foundation’s Talent & Culture (HR) department. Joady Lohr and Anna
Stillwell, the T&C team’s current senior leaders, will be assuming
permanent senior leadership roles within the T&C team.
As many Wikimedia Foundation staff know well, we have a Talent & Culture
team that brings everything they’ve got to supporting the organization and
each other. Over the past few years, they dug in, offered staff critical
support through transition, and have given our colleagues the resources and
structure we need to come together around our values and build a stronger,
better, more inclusive culture.
They’re a team that is far from ordinary - and it makes sense that their
leadership, and its structure - would reflect that. Anyone who has worked
with Joady and Anna recognize they are two sides of the same coin: they’re
deeply passionate about their work, have highly complementary skills and
experience, and they put the needs of the Foundation first. They’re a team
that shares strengths, shares accountability, and shares vision. We want to
celebrate this leadership and relationship with roles that make the most of
their strengths, in service to the organization and mission.
*I’ve asked Joady Lohr to be our Chief Talent & Culture Officer. *
In this capacity, Joady will lead the T&C department. She’ll be responsible
for developing a strong, diverse team, with the capacity and clarity they
need to thrive. She’ll work at the executive team level to advance a clear
and comprehensive vision for how we serve and support employees throughout
their time with the Foundation. She’ll work closely with Anna (more on that
below) to ensure our culture and philosophy are incorporated in our staff
policies, procedures, and programs. Her full job description is below.
As many of you know, Joady is already handling many aspects of this role.
Over the course of her five years with the Foundation, she has been
committed to consistently improving and developing systems, structures, and
consistency for everyone in the organization. She led the charge on opening
up our compensation bands and our EEO (diversity) data for increased
transparency. She’s made hard calls and handled tricky situations with
grace, respect, and empathy. She has pushed for leading-edge parental
leave, vacation, and sick time, including our experiments with remoting and
relaxing. She drove the case for upgrading our internal systems to support
these benefits. And she’s been acting as our interim lead for T&C for a
long while now, in official and unofficial ways.
*I’ve asked Anna Stillwell to take on a new role, which we’ve worked
together to define and name. *
She’ll be working across the organization to collaboratively build our
culture and organization for the future. She’ll be a strategic partner to
departments and the executive team, with leadership on recruiting
high-level roles, developing our internal leaders, and acting as an
ambassador and catalyst for the Wikimedia Foundation as a cultural leader
and employer. She’ll remain in the T&C reporting structure, working closely
with Joady, and stepping in as T&C department leadership when necessary.
What’s the title? VP didn’t quite capture what we were looking for, so we
went abroad (and to the wikis) for inspiration. We’re calling it: Chargée
d’Affaires (VP), and hope it will provoke conversation. Her full job
description is below.
Many staff members will remember the cheers that went up across the
organization when Anna rejoined the T&C team earlier this year. Anna joined
the Foundation three and a half years ago, and quickly became a defender
and champion of its values. This isn’t purely figurative -- 110 people
participated in the recent org-wide values process that Anna drove (you’ll
hear more about the outcomes at this month’s metrics meeting). Anna has
been working with the executive team to help us clarify our own
expectations around leadership and responsibility, encouraging us to
stretch our own areas of comfort. And she’s been invaluable behind the
scenes in bringing in highly qualified leaders to our work, successfully
recruiting for the Endowment Board and working with the Board of Trustees
to identify new candidates for the appointed Trustee seats, alongside
Michelle Paulson.
I am thrilled to recognize Joady and Anna’s commitment and capacity with
these new roles. They were unanimously the choice of the CTCO search panel,
and they have my full support and that of the executive team. I am grateful
for their collaborative and creative approach to leadership, and for their
partnership in developing roles that recognize their strengths. I’m looking
forward of many years of collaboration and creativity to come.
I want to thank the CTCO review panel, including Amy Elder and Liz Verlade
as coordinators, Elena Goliy, Lisa Gruwell, Katie Horn, Ryan Kaldari,
Angel Lewis, Toby Negrin, Joseph Seddon, and Kathleen Yazbak of Viewcrest
Advisors (formerly of the ED search) for her perspective and support.
Please join me in offering congratulations to Joady and Anna!
Katherine

Dear Wikimedia colleagues,
After four wonderful editions of Wiki Loves Earth resulting in over 300,000
new photos on Commons, we are happy to invite you to the 5th edition of
Wiki Loves Earth international photo contest –
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2017
As a reminder, Wiki Loves Earth is focused on natural heritage (protected
natural areas of all possible types) in different countries. Like Wiki
Loves Monuments, the contest is organised in a federative way – meaning
that it depends only on YOU and your affiliate/group if the contest will
take place in your country.
Last year we had 26 participating countries organising local contests. In
addition, owing to partnership with UNESCO we had a special nomination for
photos of biosphere reserves all over the world, getting photos from 27
other countries, such as Argentina, Canada, Indonesia, Italy, South Africa
and many others. This shows that photographers around the world have a
great enthusiasm about Wiki Loves Earth – so we hope to see many of you
organising a local contest in your country this year!
In order to join please add your country on the contest page:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2017
You can learn more on how to organise a contest in your country (it’s not
that difficult!) here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2017/Organise
If you want to participate or are interested but not sure, we would like to
hear your say:
-
Please tell us what kind of assistance you would like to get from the
international team! Just email us at wle-team(a)wikimedia.org.ua to tell
what you need to start in your country
-
To avoid eternal dissatisfaction with jury tools, we have set up a page
with an action plan:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2017/Jury_tools.
Please share your thoughts about it on the talk page!
-
Finally, you can subscribe to our mailing lists at
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikilovesearth (
wikilovesearth(a)lists.wikimedia.org) to get our updates.
We hope to see many new participants in Wiki Loves Earth this year and we
are happy to help you if you have any questions.
Best regards,
Nikola / User:Lord Bumbury
On behalf of the Wiki Loves Earth international team
Hi everyone,
Recognition as a Wikimedia movement affiliate — a chapter, thematic
organization, or user group — is a privilege that allows an independent
group to officially use the Wikimedia trademarks to further the Wikimedia
mission. While most affiliates adhere to the basic compliance standards set
forth in their agreements with the Wikimedia Foundation, a protocol has
been developed to address the exceptional cases when a Wikimedia movement
affiliate does not meet basic compliance standards and their continued
recognition as a Wikimedia movement affiliate presents a risk to the
Wikimedia movement.
On September 9, 2016, Wikimedia Hong Kong was notified of their suspension
as a Wikimedia affiliate due to long standing non-compliance with reporting
requirements, and was provided with an explicit list of tasks and deadlines
in order to return to compliance with their chapter agreement. The chapter
failed to complete these tasks by the deadline of November 1, 2016, and was
consequently notified that they would no longer be recognized as a
Wikimedia chapter after the termination of their Chapter Agreement on
February 1, 2017.
If you have questions about what this means for the community members in
Wikimedia Hong Kong’s geographic area or language scope, we have put
together a very basic FAQ, which may be found at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_movement_affiliate_de-recognition…
.
Regards,
Kirill Lokshin
Vice-Chair, Affiliations Committee
As the chapter status of Wikimedia Hong Kong has come to an end, I would
like to thank the volunteers at Wikimedia Hong Kong for their incredible
work over the past years. It is easy to start discussions about the
validity of the decision, or to play a blame game - but lets at least agree
some pretty cool stuff has been done over the past years.
Most of us will remember the Wikimania conference that was organized in
Hong Kong in 2013 - an amazing conference with an incredible amount of
volunteers that were collected from all over society to help welcome these
Wikipedians. Especially in their earliest years, I believe that Wikimedia
HK was active in supporting other Asian chapters to collaborate better and
grow.
Thank you, Wikimedians from Hong Kong, for your service! You have helped
the Wikimedia movement in Hong Kong a lot over the past years, and I hope
that we will still hear a lot from you in this new phase. The end of the
organization will hopefully not mean the end of your impactful work.
Best,
Lodewijk

Hello everyone,
Starting in April 2017, we will be taking a number of projects related to services we are offering "in the cloud" and creating a new team, Wikimedia Cloud Services (WMCS), to support a more unified approach to these efforts. The sub-teams currently managing these efforts - the Labs sub-team within the Wikimedia Technical Operations team and the Tool Labs support sub-team from the Community Tech team - will be merged to form this new team.
Wikimedia Cloud Services will be a new team in the Technology Department of the Wikimedia Foundation reporting to Victoria as the Foundation's Chief Technology Officer (CTO). This team is being formed based on a proposal made by the members of the Labs sub-team and the Tool Labs support sub-team.
The new team will be managed by Bryan Davis, who previously managed the Reading Infrastructure and Community Tech teams before helping found the Tool Labs support team in 2016. Chase Pettet, formerly manager of the Labs team, is taking on the new role of Lead Operations Engineer. Andrew Bogott, Yuvaraj Pandian, and Madhumitha Viswanathan are transferring in their existing roles from the former Labs team.
The WMCS team will maintain and extend the existing Wikimedia Labs infrastructure as a service platform, the Tool Labs platform as a service <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_as_a_service> project, and many additional supporting technologies used in the cloud environment. The new team is excited to continue supporting developers who create innovative solutions to further the free knowledge movement, and will continue to partner with the larger Wikimedia volunteer community to manage the physical and virtual resources that power the environment and provide technical support to volunteer developers and other Wikimedia Cloud Services users.
This new team will focus on three areas of ongoing support and improvement:
Providing a stable and efficient hosting platform
Creating and maintaining services that empower the creation and operation of tools
Delivering technical and community support for users of the products
This new team will soon begin working on rebranding efforts intended to reduce confusion about the products they maintain. <https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Labs_labs_labs> This refocus and re-branding will take time to execute, but the team is looking forward to the challenge.
Stay tuned for more announcements, and as always Community members are encouraged to participate on labs-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org, <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/profile/832/>Phabricator and the #wikimedia-labs IRC channel.
Thank you,
Victoria & Wes
These are all very nice sentiments. But they're phrased in very vague ways.
Is there anywhere we can see the actual concrete plan for the use of these
funds?
