Dear all,
We are glad to announce that the Affiliations Committee has recognised
[1] Wikimedia Community User Group Georgia [2] as a Wikimedia User
Group. They have been around for some time, working on disseminating
free knowledge in Georgia, but they have decided to join forces. Among
their main interests we can name promoting the awareness of the Georgian
Wikimedia projects, engaging the community and gain new contributors for
the User Group and Wikimedia projects, cooperating with other
institutions with similar missions and visions to promote free knowledge
movement in Georgia and working on the formation of Wikimedia Georgia
chapter.
/
/Now, we can say that there is an affiliate on each country in the
Caucasus!
Welcome!
Carlos

Dear Wikimedians,
We are delighted to update you today regarding the
upcoming Wikimedia Conference[1], which will be
held in Berlin on May 14-17, 2015. Wikimedia
Deutschland’s event team looks forward to making
the logistics as smoothly as possible for everyone
involved and to supporting you in the upcoming
months.
Please find below important information regarding
the registration procedure, eligibility for
participation as well as specifics in regards to
travel and hotel bookings.
== Registration now open! ==
Registration for the Wikimedia Conference 2015 is
now open. Persons who are selected by their
organization to represent them at the conference
need to register via the registration form.[2]
The registration will close on Monday, March 16,
2015. For visa applicants we strongly recommend to
register until Monday, February 23, 2015 and to
check the amount of time needed for applications
to Schengen states.
We will publish all participants’ names on the
meta page shortly after their registration in
order to help affiliates check that only their
selected representatives have registered. Please
make sure to check this page regularly.[3]
== Who is invited to attend? ==
The eligibility criteria for participating in the
Wikimedia Conference 2015 have been aligned to the
Affiliates’ Agreements with the Wikimedia
Foundation. Please note that the criteria have
changed compared to last year. [2]
Affiliates must have shown signs of recent
activity AND be up-to-date on their reporting by
the eligibility deadline (February 28). Moreover,
affiliates need to have been officially recognized
by the Wikimedia Foundation before February 01,
2015.
Chapters and Thematic Organizations can send two
delegates, or up to four, if they have paid staff;
User Groups can send one delegate. An overview of
the eligibility statuses is published on Meta.[4]
Please check this first.
Affiliates are asked to only send delegates that
are well-informed in goings-on at the affiliate,
able to confidently answer questions about it and
share experience from their group. They should
also be empowered to commit their group to
involvement in proposed projects or initiatives.
We also hope that several members of the Wikimedia
Foundation Board of Trustees and staff, the Funds
Dissemination Committee as well as the
Affiliations Committee will participate in the
conference. We see a huge advantage in having
their representatives on site and encourage them
to take part in a range of talks and discussions.
Please also register via the registration link.
==Travel and hotel booking==
We are happy to announce that all participants
will be accommodated in the same hotel. WMDE has
blocked a number of single and double rooms at the
hotel Motel One Leipziger Platz. Affiliates that
already have WMCON funding will need to book their
travel and hotel rooms individually. Affiliates
without WMCON funding will be supported by the WMF
for their travel and by WMDE for their hotel
needs. Please check Meta [4] for your status.
All participants are requested to register. To
which group you belong will be inquired in the
registration form.
We would like to express our appreciation and
sincere thanks to the Wikimedia Foundation for
their collaboration and support.
Wikimedia Deutschland is looking forward to
welcoming you in Berlin in May! Please do not
hesitate to reach out to us any time via
wmcon(a)wikimedia.de should you have any questions
or comments.
Best regards,
Daniela on behalf of the Event Team

Wikimedia Conference 2015 in Berlin
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2015
Date: May 14-17, 2015
Registration: Will open soon
Dear Wikimedia friends,
Thanks to the generous support of the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikimedia
Deutschland will be hosting the Wikimedia Conference from May 14-17,
2015 [1].
It is my pleasure to invite Wikimedia Affiliates to join us in Berlin
and I am delighted that the Funds Dissemination Committee and the
Affiliations Committee will also hold their meetings as part of this
conference. This will give us all the opportunity to discuss ideas,
exchange experience, build capacities, and shape the future of our
movement together. I am extending this invitation also to the board
and staff of the Wikimedia Foundation, and I hope that they again
choose to join us for a couple of productive days.
== Themes and program ==
The program team [2] has already kicked-off its planning process and
is now structuring the conference tracks: Capacity building, sharing
and collaboration, fundraising and finance, movement strategy. Team
members come from several entities and countries in the movement,
including the Wikimedia Foundation, and generously volunteered to
manage this process together. They will present the major goals and
schedule for the conference within the coming weeks.
== Participation and registration ==
Registration will open in the coming days. The eligibility criteria
for participating in the Wikimedia Conference 2015 have been aligned
to the Affiliates’ Agreements with the Wikimedia Foundation. Please
note that the criteria have changed compared to last year’s. Further
information on the eligibility criteria and registration will be
published on Meta [3].
Affiliates are asked to send delegates that are well-informed in
goings-on at the affiliate, able to confidently answer questions about
it and share experience from their group. They should also be
empowered to commit their group to involvement in proposed projects or
initiatives.
== Logistics ==
Our event team will shortly open the registration and send out further
information on logistical matters such as travel and accommodation
booking. Daniela Gentner will be the main contact for all questions
regarding the logistics, you can reach out to her via
wmcon(a)wikimedia.de.
On behalf of the Wikimedia Deutschland board, I am looking forward to
welcoming you in Berlin in May.

Thanks for this report! Please do upload this PDF to Commons, so that it's
preserved on Wikimedia servers rather than only on Dropbox. In the future,
reports are best shared with the movement as wiki pages, so that discussion
or feedback about them can take place on the talk page, where I could have
posted the following:
It would have been good to provide at least a little more information on
the activities described under "education" in the report. It is very
beneficial to learn from your experience what worked and what didn't, what
scale of activity this was (were 20 people trained, or 200?), and what the
outcomes were (3 articles? or 3000?).
It would also have been interesting to hear WMHK's reflection on Wikimania
2013 (and thank you, again, to all who contributed to that!). Especially
with the added perspective of the time that has passed since the event, it
is interesting to learn what WMHK considers to be the main experience
gained and lessons learned, but also any lasting benefits or difficulties
faced since then. We remember disappointment with funding decisions
(unrelated to Wikimania 2013) was one such difficulty, but there may be
others it would be helpful to learn about, and possibly find ways to
alleviate.
Thanks again for making the effort to share some news about your past work
with the movement (and to meet your obligations as a chapter).

Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the
sum of all knowledge. Help us make it a reality!
https://donate.wikimedia.org
Lila, Anasuya, and everyone else-
Lila, thank you so much for the opportunity, and thank you Anasuya, Geoff,
and Erik for your long-term work with the GLEE, CA, and CL teams — you’ve
laid a strong foundation to build on. I would also like to congratulate
Siko on her expanded role — I am looking forward to working together with
her and the rest of the team on some of our most complex challenges.
I am excited to have the opportunity to work with our current leaders and
teams. We are lucky to have some incredible people on the team, and I look
forward to collaborating, learning, and creating even better engagement and
results together.
As Lila mentioned, I’ve been a contributor to a variety of open
communities, large and small, for over a decade and a half. Since the first
time I hacked on Lego software with someone on another continent, I’ve been
a strong believer that healthy communities and personal relationships are
the core of the special thing that we do. I expect to carry that forward
into the leadership of this team, with a focus on making the Foundation a
strong, supportive partner of growing, diverse, global Wikimedian
communities.
The creation of this new team within the Foundation shows a renewed
dedication by WMF to deepen our relationship to the people who create and
drive the projects. This focus will be critically important as we seek to
support and grow our mission. There are a huge number of opportunities to
get us ever-closer to our goal of a world of free knowledge.

Thanks to Romaine for his comment:
"The education extension is a primitive form of what is needed. We need an
extension where users easily can form groups (namespace Groups: or
something, used by an extension), where they easily can see the recent
changes of edits of group members only, to be able to actively interact
with other group members and having a long term participation in Wikipedia.
Having software where users, interest groups or a group of editors from an
external organisation can work together."
At Wikimedia UK we are looking at taking this up in broader context,
editathons etc. and it would be great to hear of other peoples experiences
and their views.
