Subject: Re: [Wikimedia Announcements] ‘Save the date’ for Wikipedia’s 15th
birthday
To: wikimediaannounce-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Hi everyone,
We’re excited to share some new updates on plans for Wikipedia’s 15th
birthday.
TL;DR: We’ve designed a mark, Wikipedia 15, to be used, remixed, and built
on by the community as we celebrate Wikipedia’s 15th birthday.
Wikipedia 15 is a design concept offered to help Wikimedians across the
globe celebrate Wikipedia’s 15th birthday. But it’s not just about
celebrating Wikipedia. It’s about celebrating the birth of an idea, an idea
that helped shape the free and open knowledge movement. In the fifteen
years Wikipedia has existed, we've all come together to create something
worth celebrating, something worth protecting, and even something worth
arguing about. Wikipedia is a living, breathing collection of the people’s
knowledge. Every day we build it, every day we protect it, and every day we
enjoy it. We use it in every part of our daily lives. From looking up
something we're curious about, to winning an argument, to settling a bar
bet, to cramming for a test, to planning a trip, to learning a new skill.
Wikipedia is a cherished public trust. It's part of how we live now. 28% of
the planet has never known a world without Wikipedia.
Let's take this year to celebrate not just the fundamental ways Wikipedia
has changed how we learn, but also the small, joyous ways it's enriched our
lives. Knowledge is joy!
This year's mark is meant to be fun. And lighthearted. It can move! Or it
can be still. You can make it what you want to be. You can add objects that
are meaningful to you and where you live and what you do. You can use
objects to tell a story of what Wikipedia means to you.
How to use the Wikipedia 15 mark
The mark consists of two basic elements:
-
an image/or animated group of images
-
text below
Other than keeping things in that order, you can reuse, remix, and enjoy
the mark in a variety of ways.
How to localize
We've provided a core set of 27 images
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_15/Material>, but we hope you
add your own and mix them in. You can use this in any graphics editing
program, including Inkscape <https://inkscape.org/>, which is free and open
source. You can add multiple images and make an animated GIF
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIF>! The words “Wikipedia 15” can be
replaced with any localized example in any language. The typeface we used
is OpenSans, free from Google Fonts and freely licensed under version 2.0
of the Apache License <https://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0.html>.
Taking the Wikipedia 15 mark further
The Wikipedia 15 mark can be used to produce celebratory merchandise,
identify special web pages or other digital content, make posters or
banners, name tags, birthday cakes, and much more. The designers developed
this sample guide (below) to show some of the possible uses of the marks.
Be creative and share your concepts and ideas in the gallery on the Wikipedia
15 meta page <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_15/Material>.
Please make them to share! But please do not use the name "Wikipedia" to
sell any items, or for other uses without checking the trademark policy
<https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Trademark_policy>.
The 27 images and guidelines for using the mark can be found under the material
section <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_15/Material> of the
Wikipedia 15 meta page. A huge thank you to our design team, Mule
<http://muledesign.com/>, who helped design and develop this fun and
inspiring creation. We can’t wait to see how you and your Wikimedia
community use this mark!
Please feel free to direct any questions to Sam Lien (slien(a)wikimedia.org)
and Joe Sutherland (jsutherland(a)wikimedia.org).
All the best,
Sam and Joe

All,
I thought it would be helpful to share with you all this blog post from a
key volunteer at Wikimania 2014, who has gone on to launch a domestic
violence charity on a shoestring budget.
It explains how she went about it, what their workflows are, how they
attract and keep volunteers, how they use open licensing to make a real
difference in a non-open-movement group. I've already got some great new
ideas from it, and it has ideas that could help all of us, from the WMF to
WMIE.
Key reading, I think, for those who have even a small group of Wikimedia
volunteers and no budget!

Hi all,
I want to kindly ask a follow up on the issue Isabella Apriana has
mentioned - "...it's not official yet for Montreal, but seems like
there's nothing we can do about 2017 now because community discussion is
expected to focus on 2018-2021."
Is that true? Should all the bid team except Montreal stop to spend their
energy for the 2017 bid anymore, or should they keep contact the local
venue and service providers to have a better research on their bid?
I personally really want to have another Wikimania in Asia (if so, I won't
have big jet lag issue, haha), I see WMID is putting some lot of efforts of
their organization on the bid process (I was having a meeting with them for
2 hours to know better about the venue situation in Bali), so I ask this
question. Just want to make sure how the follow up should go for the
bidders before the community consultation in November to prevent burned out
and reduce feeling of frustration.
Best,
Liang, Wikimedia Taiwan
Hi folks,
Just letting you know that I’m reading the recent Wikimania-focused mailing
list threads with interest, as the Community Resources team is now on-point
for funding and coordinating WMF’s involvement in Wikimania.
A couple of first thoughts to share:
1. WMF has learned from past Wikimanias that we need to do our
due-diligence on venue etc before the host team and location is announced.
One reason for this is that we have a limited budget for Wikimania, and
doing a site visit before the host is finalized helps us ensure that we’re
able to support the costs of the event in a given location. Ellie Young is
headed to Montreal in 2 weeks and based on what she learns from that visit,
we’re aiming to give the steering committee what they need to confirm
selection before the end of 2015. That said, we recognize that
communications around this haven’t gone as planned, and we are looking into
improvements…(see thought 2)
2. We, too, would like to see the movement building towards a shared vision
of Wikimania! It is great to see so many people, in true Wikimedian-style,
thinking about big-picture questions of participation, representation, and
content at Wikimania. Knowing that mailing list discussions have their
limits, here’s how my team is thinking about collecting feedback more
systematically for this going forward:
We’ll be launching a community consultation in November to help build
towards more shared vision and process improvements for Wikimania 2018 -
2021. Two key inputs we’ve been thinking about using to launch that
conversation are 1) responses from the survey of last Wikimania’s attendees
and 2) the steering committee’s recommendation for host selection going
forward.
We’re still regrouping from the latest Resources Consultation, and will
begin planning for a Wikimania Consultation next week, so after that we’ll
be able to share more information about what this consultation will look
like and the exact timeline. Meanwhile, suggestions and open questions that
you’d like to see resolved via this consultation are most welcome in this
thread. My hope is that a consultation will help broaden participation in
these conversations and get us from input to action.
Warm regards,
Siko

All,
For the last three years I have been the Executive Director for Wikimedia
Sverige. Before that I have been Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary of the
board (at different times) and have been involved since the founding of the
chapter in 2007. It is perhaps even an understatement to say that the
chapter has been a big part of my life. I have had the opportunity to be
part of a fantastic journey from starting the first chapter’s activities to
today, with stable strategic activities, seven people in the office, and a
diversified board. It has been an awesome time in my life and I have met
and worked with some truly wonderful persons along the way, and I am
thankful to all of you that have made it so inspiring. But now, as my
contract is about to come to an end, I feel that it is time for me to move
on to new endeavours. I am confident that the chapter is already in good
hands, with a professional board and an office with experienced staff
members and functional processes, but I’ll be around until at least the
beginning of January to make it a smooth transition.
I will obviously always be a wikimedian at heart and probably pick up on my
editing again and I will also stay subscribed to most mailing lists. If not
earlier, I’ll see you in Esino Lario.
Best regards,
*Jan Ainali*

Hello All.
Ballsy and sincere mail Pavel, thank you for that and I understand your
points, however as a longstanding wikiperson actually volunteering and a
believer in the open participatory model which built Wikiprojects, I need
to respond and disagree with you in some parts.

1. Except clearly at least one com member is unhappy with the process, the
com was somewhat unaware of actual candidates, the decision is suspended,
the change of the game terms was not communicated to anyone in public (not
to mention major stakeholders like Chapters sponsoring Wikimania attendees)
and the whole process is completely not transparent. We are not even sure
if WMF in general (Staff? Board?) supports it.
Fun fact: we have this website thing to document processes and inform
others, they call it Meta. 8-)
And taking a look into https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2017_bids
you don't even see any Montreal. Or info about the major change in the
process.
OTOH, you could see there encouragements to submit bids.
Fun fact #2: this page has been marked as historical by JForester only
minutes ago which looks like a panic management.

Actually, it was Bismarck.

Well, some seem to care, at least on these lists or fb (see Josh or Perth
people).
And others care for general transparency and community involvement which
seem to be noticably deteriorating, see the issues with strategic plan. Not
that I require a multilevel RFCs, general venue elections and whatnots but
at least simple message would be more than great to not waste time of the
potential bidders.
I might be wrong but I think that volunteer-driven organizations should be
careful to respect their volunteers. Here I think the ball was somewhere
dropped. I imagine someone actually wanted to off-load the volunteers and
make their lives much better, improve the spending etc. etc., but the
communication failed at some point.
Regarding the community consultation, I feel there are some more people
than "old-timers" of en.wp and de.wp, and what is more these talks are read
by much more people. In many cases I think they were found crucial by WMF
staff as well although I do agree we could improve here, people are often
overburdened and we are running circles.
But it would be very sad to turn into a yet another bureaucracy.
Tl;dr I agree with you that making decisions is important and WMF is the
major stakeholder, but I would put more value into making things fair and
transparent, otherwise people get angry and the decisions are more prone to
fault.

michał "aegis maelstrom" buczyński
