Hi All,
I am very happy to announce a favorable decision we have recently received
in an Italian defamation case brought against the Wikimedia Foundation by
former Italian Minister of Defense and Berlusconi advisor, Mr. Cesare
Previti.
You can read more about it in our latest blog
post<http://blog.wikimedia.org/2013/06/26/wikimedia-foundation-legal-victory-ita…>(available
in English and Italian).
Best,

Hi all,
It is my pleasure to draw your attention to the resolution adopted by the
Affiliations Committee yesterday [1] that recognizes the GLAM Wiki U.S.
Consortium[2] as the fifth Wikimedia User Group.
The GLAM-Wiki US Consortium will bring together cultural organizations,
Wikipedians, Wikimedia chapters, and individuals in an independent
community of practice devoted to supporting the GLAM-Wikimedia initiative
in the United States
Wikimedia User Groups[3] are one of the three new types of affiliations
created last year to empower volunteers wanting to conduct offline work.
User group status is meant to be an easy form of affiliation, where the
main requirements are an agreed goal, plans for offline work and a history
of projects, and at least three people participating, as well as a public
wiki page with all the relevant information.
Please join me in welcoming the Consortium to the Wikimedia affiliate
family, and go ahead and sign up to be a member if you would like to
participate in its work.
Best regards.
Bence Damokos,
Affiliations Committee

Yesterday, the OpenStreetMap Foundation completed a funding drive of £40,000 ($60,000) to buy two new servers.
Because of the success of the fundraising, they have decided to extend the campaign to raise another £32,500 ($50,000).
See http://blog.openstreetmap.org/2013/06/26/extending-funding-drive/ for details.
If you've got some spare cash and want to support the technical development of the map anyone can edit, go to http://donate.openstreetmap.org/server2013/
You can also donate via Bitcoin.
OSM is growing at a phenomenal rate. The success and ramping up of OSM Foundation fundraising shows that OpenStreetMap is perhaps experiencing the same kind of organisational growing up process as Wikimedia has...

Hi all,
Last week I noticed a nice design for the list info page of the WLM-US
mailing list that I tweaked for this mailing list:
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/cabal-l
What do you think? Mentally replace all instance of "cabal-l" with
"wikimedia-l" and compare to
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l. Unfortunately
Mailman only seems to allow this change to be made for the English version
of the page, so if you try to view the page in another language, you'll
still get the standard list info page.
Any objections to changing it?

Hello,
My warm congratulations to the people chosen to the WMF board, and to the
FDC positions, and also my thankfulness to those who were candidates.
Running for a public office is a lot of work and even more to invest time
and energy in such a position. Without these people, things would be a lot
less democratic in the world.
Kind reards
Ziko

Hi folks,
I'm forwarding this message, written by Risker, for the election committee.

The 2013 Wikimedia Board Election Committee has announced the results of
the 2013 Board Elections today for the three elected Wikimedia Foundation
Board of Trustees positions. For the first time, the election also included
seats for the Funds Dissemination Committee and for the FDC Ombudperson.
These results were certified by the Board of Trustees.
The successful candidates are:
*For the Board of Trustees:*
Samuel Klein (Sj)
Phoebe Ayers (phoebe)
María Sefidari (Raystorm)
*For the Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC):*
Delphine Ménard (notafish)
Cristian Consonni (CristianCantoro)
*For the FDC Ombudperson:*
Susana Morais (Lusitana)
The Election Committee certifies that the election was fairly executed and
there is no reason to doubt the results. There were 1927 entries into the
voter log. Of these, there were 13 struck votes (all of which were test
votes); 105 “greyed-out” or cancelled votes resulting from users submitting
a subsequent ballot; and 1809 valid votes. Additional, more detailed
statistical analysis will be available in the coming days and weeks.
The addition of the FDC and FDC Ombudperson has added several layers of
complexity to the election process for candidates, voters, Engineering
staff and the Election Committee. Several issues relating to the use of the
SecurePoll extension were identified, although none related to the security
of votes or reliability of results. The start of the voting period was
delayed by one week as the Committee could not verify that voter lists and
voting software were ready and functional on the scheduled starting date.
All levels of the community, including the Board, the candidates, the
voters, WMF staff and the Election Committee, are encouraged to participate
in thepost mortem discussion of the election process (at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections_2013/Post_mo…).
The Election Committee extends its thanks to Sam Reed, Philippe Beaudette,
and James Alexander for their invaluable contributions and assistance.

"The GCHQ mass tapping operation has been built up over five years by
attaching intercept probes to transatlantic fibre-optic cables where they
land on British shores carrying data to western Europe from telephone
exchanges and internet servers in north America.
This was done under secret agreements with commercial companies,
described in one document as "intercept partners"."
