Hi,
Today I will be migrating the mailing lists from a very old server (lily) in Amsterdam, to a new server (sodium) in our new Ashburn data center. Mailman will be upgraded to version 2.1.13 along the way.
During the migration, mail will be delayed as all data will need to be transferred to the new host. No mail should go lost, but no new mails will be sent out during the process until done, and the web interface will be unavailable. This shouldn't take more than one hour, if all goes well.
I will report here when things should be back up and running. Afterwards, please let us know of any new issues, in bugzilla or on IRC (#wikimedia-tech). We don't expect any problems, but as with any software upgrade or migration, this can't be guaranteed...
Thanks,

Assunto: [Daily article] January 18: Nick Drake

100px|Nick Drake's grave in Tanworth-in-Arden
Nick Drake (1948–1974) was an English singer-songwriter and musician,
best known for his sombre guitar-based songs. He failed to find a wide
audience during his lifetime, but now ranks among the most influential
English singer-songwriters of the last 50 years. Drake released his
debut album, Five Leaves Left, in 1969. None of his first three albums
sold more than 5,000 copies on their initial release. Drake suffered
from depression and insomnia throughout his life, and these topics were
often reflected in his lyrics. On completion of his third album, 1972's
Pink Moon, he withdrew from both live performance and recording,
retreating to his parents' home in rural Warwickshire. He died from an
overdose of amitriptyline in 1974 (grave pictured). Drake was credited
as an influence by numerous artists during the 1980s, including The
Dream Academy, who in 1985 reached the UK and US charts with "Life in a
Northern Town", a song written for and dedicated to him. By the early
1990s, Drake represented a certain type of "doomed romantic" musician
in the UK music press. In 2000, Volkswagen featured the title track
from Pink Moon in a television advertisement, and within a month Drake
had sold more records than he had in the previous 30 years. (more...)

Wikiquote quote of the day:
"Elohim," the name for the creative power in Genesis, is a female
plural, a fact that generations of learned rabbis and Christian
theologians have all explained as merely grammatical convention. The
King James and most other Bibles translate it as "God," but if you take
the grammar literally, it seems to mean "goddesses." Al Shaddai, god of
battles, appears later, and YHWH, mispronounced Jehovah, later still.

An independent internal news bulletin
for the members of the Wikimedia community

=== The EN Wikipedia goes offline for 24 hours ===
The community of the English language Wikipedia has decided to
"blackout" the English Wikipedia for 24 hours. A sort of strike thus.
The blackout goes in to effect from 05:00 UTC on Wednesday, January
18. The blackout is a protest against the proposed law of the United
States of America "Stop Online Piracy Act" (SOPA).
The protest is there because the proposed law is could harm the
operation of community driven website like Wikipedia.
The decision of the Community of the English language Wikipedia is
supported by the Wikimedia Foundation. This in the first time the
English Wikipedia - the oldest and most popular of all Wikipedias -
does something like this. The Italian language Wikipedia did this a
couple of months ago.
Other language Wikipedias have indicated to show support by displaying
a banner but not also go "dark". Also non-Wikimedia websites will take
part but not all by going dark. Google will put a link on there
homepage about it.

Asaf Bartov <asaf.bartov(a)gmail.com>
Wikimedia is a movement. We're not a game, we're not a website, we're not
even just an encyclopedia-- we're a nonviolent revolution in information
sharing.
For-profit media is harder to trust-- we've seen that "For-profit" media
often means "For sale".
In a time where it's hard to trust a congress or mainstream media, one
thing we can agree to trust is each other-- in the form of the Wikimedia
community and its leaders.
Today, I'm so proud to be a part of this community. It's _extra-clear_
today that we do stand for something-- indeed, we stand for something quite
revolutionary.
MSNBC and CNN can never afford to go back-- they have advertisers. We are
one of the few truly-non-profit information sources-- and that gives us a
unique value unlike for-profit information sources. In a sea of alphabet
soup, three letters we CAN trust are WMF.
I hope in 2012, the WMF will take its governance model and continue to
apply it outside the limited scope of encyclopedias. Genealogy is the
goto example-- Ancestry.com can't afford to blackout for good causes-- WE
can.
We're not just another information source-- we're an information source
with a conscience. That makes all the difference.
Good work, WMF. Thank you for what you've done, thank you for what you're
doing.
