Concerns have been raised that this needed wider distribution. Please
note that it will happen in about 10 hours from now.

Sujet: [Wikitech-l] Planned 1.17 deployment on February 8
Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2011 18:45:30 -0800
Hi everyone,
Just repeating something I just posted to
http://techblog.wikimedia.org/2011/02/planned-1-17-deployment/
The engineering team is busy working on the deployment of the 1.17 branch of
MediaWiki[1]. We plan to roll this out next week to all languages and
projects, Tuesday, February 8, with work starting at 07:00 UTC (which is
11pm on Monday, February 7 for San Francisco).
If all goes well, you should only notice the improvement. If it doesn’t go
well, that’s because there’s something we missed, and that’s where we’d love
your help. Please help us test this release! We have a test instance of the
software we plan to deploy available at http://prototype.wikimedia.org/. If
you find issues, please report them in Bugzilla:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Bugzilla
There are many, many little fixes and improvements that have gone into 1.17
(see the draft release notes[2] for an exhaustive list) . There isn’t much
that’s visible to users of the site, but one under the hood improvement that
should result in some speed improvements: Resource Loader[3]. Resource
Loader optimizes the use of JavaScript in MediaWiki, speeding up delivery of
JavaScript by compressing it sometimes, and cutting down on the amount of
unused JavaScript that gets delivered to the browser in the first place.
Much of the work in this development cycle has been centered on ensuring
compatibility with the new system. Since it makes such a large shift in the
way that JavaScript is delivered to the browser, it’s also an operational
aspect we’ll be keeping a close eye on, as load shifts between servers in
our infrastructure.
Note that this isn’t a release for download, yet. On and after February 8,
the “latest” version of MediaWiki will still be 1.16 as listed on
mediawiki.org. We plan to update this to 1.17 sometime after the deployment
of the 1.17 branch, after we’ve had time to run it in production for a while
and fix the issues we’re likely to find.
So please, help us test this release, and if you find bugs, please report
them in Bugzilla. Thanks!
Rob

Hi,
taking this as a follow up on the irc meeting today, one of the
questions that came up was "what is the reason that WMF is
collecting/storing this data". To be clear, with that we did not mean
"because the board told us to" but rather what the purpose is: is it
because you are legally required to store it for the US Govt, do you
want to be able to sue the volunteers if they misbehave, do you want
to confirm they are real people etc. Based on that, people can
probably increase their understanding of the recent changes.
The Foundation people on IRC were unfortunately unable to answer.
Christine promised to find it out and report back here soon, so this
is just a reminder - no need to have big discussions until then.
Thanks,
Lodewijk
Cross posting to Foundation list....

Some company wants to delete their competition's Wikipedia articles ?
Delete its own article to clear controversies ? :)
Somebody wants to try a sting operation , to find what kind of articles they
want to delete ? Will be very interesting!

It would be instructive to know what articles they are worried about and
why. I find that most people wanting articles deleted have a good reason
and, while deletion may not be justified by Wikipedia's "rules", there are
often problems with the articles that we ought to address.
People wanting articles created are a different matter - it is inevitably
vanity or promotion.

Don't forget all the corresponding "create an article for hire" posts.
For added entertainment, post that the article was a paid-for creation
or deletion, and invite critique of your technique.

User:HalanTul from the Sakha Wikipedia asked me to ask about this here.
The writers of the Sakha Wikipedia want to add icons to "share in
Facebook/Twitter/etc" to some articles to promote the project, but
they are concerned about the legal and ideological implications of
such a move: Doesn't putting the logo of a commercial company right in
the article violate the no-advertising principle?

Wikinews has used these kinds of buttons for quite a while. They are placed in a
"share this" box at the bottom of every article. See, for example,
http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Egyptian_president_will_not_seek_re-election_in…
For a while equivalent buttons were also active on Commons but they were turned
off as it was unclear they had community support. I'm not aware of any Wikipedia
edition that has used them though.

I think, like church of emacs, that identi.ca will be better + other cc-by (not
nc not nd) media.

Hi everyone,
Several people have raised important questions on this list about the identification policy as it applies to OTRS volunteers.
Together with interim counsel and other members of the community department, I have been reviewing our compliance with, and interpretation of, Wikimedia Foundation policies including the access to nonpublic data policy. Based on a risk assessment, we decided that we needed more consistent identification of OTRS volunteers, and retention of identification data..
Both on the OTRS mailing list and here, people have rightly pointed out the complexity of this issue. More discussion is clearly needed, and we will therefore table the issue and review it in more detail with our new General Counsel, Geoff, and with the community, once Geoff has had an opportunity to be brought in and get acquainted with the community.
For those who have not sent identification yet, feel free to defer doing so. For those who have provided ID, we will destroy it on request (we may have to again obtain it if we finally conclude that retention is necessary).

I found the following recently-created essay by Yair rand to be
thought-provoking and wanted to bring it to the attention of others:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Yair_rand/Future_of_Wikimedia
Its main theme is that "a Wikipedia surrounded by successful projects will
have a far better future than without". Too often outreach efforts,
strategic planning, and development of MediaWiki focus solely on Wikipedia.
The essay provides arguments as to why that tunnel-vision would be
ill-advised and advice on ways the other projects can be improved.
