Hmm I wonder if some things can be added there.... (sound of feathers
ruffling)
Btw how does one *open* this tarball thing (on Windows) ?
I'd seriously advocate against this. Citizendium is well known to have
major, major problems. You may have heard about the Homeopathy
situation, where not only was a dangerous article - it suggested
homeopathy be used to treat life-threatening conditions - written by
homeopaths, with nary a word of criticism that wasn't immediately
"rebutted", put on the main page, but Larry Sanger ran around
advocating for it.
If you want to set up a service for small wiki hosting, it may not be
a bad idea, but I wouldn't under any circumstances do it just for
Citizendium.
Should we offer to host citizendium?
Okey get over the instinctive reaction.
==The background==
Those who have read this week's signpost will be aware that
citizendium is in significant financial difficulties. If not see the
end of the briefly section:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2010-11-08/News_a…
Now I know we haven't exactly had the best of relationships with
citizendium but we are if not distant allies at least interested
observers. Their mission and much of their product at this time
coincides with ours.
==The proposal==
We should offer to host citizendium on our servers at no cost for a
period of 1 (one) year offering a level of support equivalent to our
smaller projects. After one year the citizendium community/Editorial
Council is expected to have sorted themselves out to the point where
they can arrange their own hosting. At which point we lock the
database and provide them with the dumps
===The pros===
*It is inline with out mission
*It wouldn't cost very much. Given their traffic levels and database
size the cost to host would probably be lower than some of our more
prolific image uploaders.
*It would be possible to effectively give them instacommons
*Citizendium is an interesting project and gives us a way to learn
what the likely outcome of some alternative approaches would be
*It helps with positioning the WMF as more than just wikipedia
*It prevents the citizendium project from dying which since they have
useful content would be unfortunate
===The cons===
*They may still be on PostgreSQL rather than mysql which could create
issues with compatibility
*Some of their community are people banned from wikipedia
*risk of looking like triumphalism over Larry (can be addressed by
making sure jimbo is in no way involved)
*keeping control of the relationship between the citizendium
community/Editorial Council and the various WMF communities
*Handing the password database back at the end of the year would need
to be done with care.
All in all other than the assuming we can deal with the database issue
I think it is something we should do. The citizendium
community/Editorial Council may well say no but at least we will have
tried.

Hi, everyone.
I'm working with Steven Walling and the WikiX team to help get ready
for the coming celebrations. As you know, Wikipedia’s 10-year birthday
is coming up really soon! We’ve got scores of events planned—at least
two on every continent so far[1]—and we’re hoping for more. Now, we
just need to make sure the rest of the world knows about this amazing
milestone, too.
Most people outside of the community don’t fully realize we’re a
mission-driven, non-profit movement run by real, everyday people.
Often, Wikipedia is thought to be a static product or service, not a
living, breathing community of people, from all walks of life, who
care about providing a free public service to the world. We want the
rest of the world to know and understand us as a people-driven
movement, appreciate what we’re doing and --most importantly-- join
us. To help, we're asking volunteers [2] passionate about Wikipedia
to take a few minutes to write a bit about what it means to be a
Wikipedian. Telling your own story about your personal connection to
Wikipedia is about being proud of the time you’ve spent working on an
international pubic resource and vital necessity to over 400 million
people all over the world. It’s about thanking the thousands of people
who work alongside you to keep this amazing project going.
In addition, we're compiling information about Wikipedia in the form
of a historical timeline [3] , curating interesting data in the form
of top 10 lists [4][5] and searching for long-time Wikipedians who
might also be celebrating their 10th birthday as editors [6]. If you
have anything to add [7], please share!
As always, if you have any questions or suggestions, let us know.
Cheers,
Moka Pantages

Hi,
I've got an error message in trying to access Japanese Wikipedia. It
seems long, but it's not my topic.
IIRC the message from server was multilingualized years ago and we
have offered the message with links to other lang
same messages.
The message itself seems not changed from the past, but now it's in
English and only without any links to any other language.
What happened? Who decided to remove lang links? And what is the idea
behind of this removal?
Cheers,

> Hi everyone,
>
> So with little more than a month to go before Wikipedia's anniversary, I'm pleased to say that the kits of special Wikipedia 10 merchandise we've talked about previously (on this list and at ten.wikipedia.org) are ready to be shipped. To reiterate:
>
> * This merchandise is free. The WMF is paying all shipping and production costs.
> * It's available to anyone that has confirmed publicly that they're holding an event that will celebrate Wikipedia's 10th anniversary. You don't have to be holding a particular size or type of event (we have conferences, film screenings, parties, plain old meet-ups etc.).
> * Everyone is getting the same kit.
> * Each box includes 50 t-shirts with a balance of sizes for men and women, as well as a mixed assortment of stickers and buttons. You can see mockups of the designs at Design/Merchandise on tenwiki. I'm going to get pictures of it all on Commons soon, under Category:Wikipedia 10.
>
> This means that if you're organizing one of the more than 60 events currently in the works, I need two things to be able to ship to you:
>
> 1. A public listing for your event on tenwiki. Just to be clear, this is merely a description and links to wherever you're organizing. If your wiki page exists but doesn't tell people the basics of who/what/when then please enrich it a little, so that logistically we can feel comfortable shipping a couple hundred dollars worth of merchandise to you. The New York City and Brasília events are good examples of the level of detail I'm talking about.
>
> 2. Contact information and your shipping address, plus an estimate of the size of your event so that we know how many boxes to send you. You can email this to me privately.
>
> The shipping takes roughly a week depending on location (of course), so the sooner you can send me your event information the better. We're hoping to get as many kits as possible sent before January 1.
>
> For those of you who've already done all of the above, thank you. I will contact you this week before we ship anything to you.
