The New Sister Projects Meetup is a gathering together of Wikimedians
interested in experimenting with proposals for new sister projects.
There has been no new sister project since 2012!
Let's talk about ways to make a more agile process where it is much easier
to start small new projects to see if they work out, and maybe also to
merge old projects if they do not work out.
One such proposal is Wikispore, which involves a Community Wishlist-style
contest, but existing proposals like Wikimedia genealogy project, as well
as all subject-based and general ideas will be considered.
Technical input from small wiki founders/administrators and MediaWiki
developers/installers will also be more than welcome!
Since this conflicts with other important meetups, we will be glad to
schedule a follow-up session later at Wikimania if there is interest.
**Saturday, 17 August, 13:00 – 14:00 (1:00 - 2:00 pm) Central European
Summer Time - meet at lunchtime in Lessing (D499)**

Hi all,
we are organizing a meetup during Sunday lunch for people who are working
on some form of editor retention (or planning to work, or just interested).
If you are involved in things like mentoring or welcoming new users or
doing research about user engagement, and would like to exchange
experiences, this is for you! The hope is that we can use it kick off some
form of longer-term collaboration between people working in this area.
More info here:

Subject: Documentary film crew at Wikimania
Hello everyone,
The Wikimedia Foundation Communications department has been in touch with a
production crew that is working on a documentary about Wikipedia. They are
planning to film at Wikimania this year in interviews with volunteers (you
may seem them around today outside!) as well as some select sessions of the
conference. The crew will be joined by a member of WMF Comms or our PR
agency partner. We wanted to share some information with you all about the
production crew and how they will be engaging at Wikimania.
We are working with the crew and space leaders to film some sessions of the
conference, and some of the crew will walk around to speak with different
volunteers for initial, non-filmed conversations. The crew is also aware of
the filming and photography policy and that those individuals wearing
colored lanyards wish not to be filmed or photographed. If anyone can be
seen directly in the shot, the crew will ask their permission before
filming.
For a bit about the documentary - this will be a documentary film about the
people and movement behind Wikipedia - why people get involved in the
movement, what makes them stay, and specific opportunities and challenges
ahead. They are hoping to release the film in time for Wikipedia’s 20th
anniversary. They are still in the very early stages of production.
We think this is an exciting opportunity and look forward to working
closely with the filmmaker as the documentary develops.
If you have questions or concerns about being filmed or how the crew will
be interacting at Wikimania, please reach out to myself and Greg Varnum
(cc’ed from WMF Comms).
Thank you,
Sam

Dear Wikimedians,
We would like to use the opportunity of our global gathering to remember
and mourn the community members that have left us.
Instead of including this in a speech, I would like to arrange a small
corner within the Wikimania venue where everyone can remember and mourn,
similar to what we did at the Wikimedia Conference 2018.[1] The corner will
be in a quieter part of the venue.
I would kindly ask you to send me, Cornelius, the relevant information
(name or nickname, photo if possible, date of birth/death if
possible), by August
9, 24:00 CEST, so everything can be arranged accordingly.
With such a space, we hope to both honor those that have left us, as well
as give those that want to mourn a dedicated place to do so.
Best regards
Cornelius

I have the pleasure to let you know that a free surströmming tasting will
be arranged at the Stockholm university area (outside)! We got it approved
by the university today 😊
More details will be provided next week.

[apologies for cross-posting.]
Hi all,
If you are a representative of a chapter, user group, or affiliate [0]
attending Wikimania and interested to talk with the Research team at
Wikimedia Foundation, we would really like to meet you. Please read
on. Otherwise, please feel free to ignore this message.
-------
One of the empowering aspects of attending Wikimania for me in the
past years has been to be able to connect to many of you in person: to
build lasting relationships, to understand the challenges that you
face in your Wikimedia related efforts, and brainstorm with you about
how/if research can help you answer some of your open questions. These
conversations have been a source of inspiration for at least a few
projects that the Research team at Wikimedia Foundation has picked up
over the past years [1]. As our team is planning for our presence in
Wikimania 2019 [2], I only hope that we can have even more of this
kind of interaction together while we're in Stockholm.
To this end and in order to make the best use of our collective time
together, I'd like to propose an experimental meet-up during this
year's Wikimania where the interested representatives of chapters,
user groups, affiliates and the members of the Research team to meet.
In order to organize this session, we need your input and I have put
together a few questions at
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe1YZmgxkJJA2lO6jl_nmOL9pwhbNu5GKV…
that I'd appreciate if you answer if you find the idea of meeting up
interesting. If you do not want to go to the link above and still want
to provide your input, please send your responses to the questions at
the end of this email to me privately.
Whether the meet-up idea ends up being a useful one for you or not
will be determined by your responses. Independent of that, I look
forward to touch-basing with many of you soon. :)
Best,
Leila
[0] From earlier conversations with chapters, user groups, and
affiliates I've got the impression that it's useful to have a
dedicated session focused on these groups and their
needs/perspectives. This being said, this is not a hard rule. :) If
you are not a representative of these groups and you'd like to attend,
you're welcome to. Please fill out the survey.

----
Survey questions if you don't want to fill out the survey by going to
the link provided in this email:
Description:
[The following is a tentative description of the event and it may
change based on your responses to this survey. The agenda for the meet
up will be finalized on 2019-08-07.]
Let's use the opportunity of being in Wikimania to get together and
discuss the following and beyond:
* [10-min] An update about what the Research team at Wikimedia
Foundation has done since we met last year in Wikimania. We will
provide updates on "Addressing Knowledge Gaps" and research
contributions to "Knowledge Integrity".
* [5-min] What stopped us from doing more? What challenges did we face?
* [15-min] Let's talk longer term: what does it take to have a global
network of researchers around Wikimedia projects? Why is having such a
network important? Can we work together on this?
* [30-min or more] What are some of the most pressing needs/questions
that chapters, affiliates, and user groups face? (with an eye for
converting them to research questions.)
* ...
-------
To learn more about the Research team at Wikimedia Foundation and what
we do, please visit https://research.wikimedia.org/ .
-------
Question 1. Are you interested to attend a meet-up with Wikimedia
Foundation's Research team?
Question 2. If your answer to the above question is Yes or Maybe,
please let us know which affiliate, user group or chapter do you
represent or are a member of?
Question 3. What is a good outcome of the meet-up for you if you
choose to attend it?
Question 4. If you have specific times and days that you cannot attend
the meet-up, please indicate them below.
Question 5. Anything else you'd like to share with us and we should
take into account when planning for this event?

Hello Elena Lappen this year there will be a meeting for women, to talk
about our problem of being few women, a specific lunch or exchange only for
women.
