Visiting Egypt after Wikimania

Hi everyone, I have a little problem concerning staying in Egypt after Wikimania: I have guaranteed lodging with a friend of my family who lives in Cairo, but as far as I know she'll be working all day and therefore not available for sightseeing. Now, I am the first to admit that I am the most scatterbrained, absent-minded person ever; I also freely admit that I get lost in supermarkets (even the one I use every week). I really, truly do. I am infamous for turning a street corner and then wondering which way I had come from. Family members place bets on how far I am from my intended destination whenever I go out. Honestly. I am afraid that if I go out alone in Cairo I will get seriously lost. My point is, are there any Wikimedians thinking of staying on in Cairo/elsewhere in Egypt after Wikimania? And if there is, would they mind having me tag along while sightseeing? I asked on the Wikimania IRC channel if it was OK to send this e-mail to the list. Scholarship notifications

All: I have not yet heard back regarding scholarship decisions for Wikimania. Several times during the past month, I sent an email to the scholarships address ( <wikimania-scholarships(a)wikimedia.org> ) inquiring when decisions would be announced, and I have not received a response. At this point, it may be impossible for me to attend even if I am awarded the full amount I originally requested, as travel prices have risen. Does anyone know when scholarship decisions will be announced? Since other summer plans I have are contingent on this information, it's important that I at least know when I will know as soon as possible. Thanks! -- Seth

Registration problems

There seems to be some confusion about processing registrations. Two days ago I submitted registrations for both me and my son, Darren. For some reason the system chose to charge more for my son than for me. I immediately sent an e-mail to complain about this, and have received no reply. As to my own registration, which I had completed first, I then followed the links to make the payment by PayPal, but now I am advised that that payment has not been claimed. I would appreciate it if someone would deal with this. Thanks, Ray

Wikimania promotional materials?

Hi everyone! I am attending / helping organize Recent Changes Camp next weekend (http://rcc2008.blueoxen.net/), which will attract wiki enthusiasts from the San Francisco area and and all over. I am wondering if we have any promotional materials about Wikimania 2008 that I could hand out or at least have on site. Ben did those some lovely "butterfly" posters for previous years; is there anything like that for this year that I could print up? If not, does anyone want to make something up really quickly that I could print out and bring? Maybe a half-page informational flyer? cheers, Phoebe

Wikimania 2008: Registration opened

With less than three months to go until the fourth annual Wikimania conference, registration has finally opened and will remain so until the 15th of June. This year Wikimania starts with the a promise to "Change the Shape of Wisdom" as it is hosted by Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the reincarnation of the ancient Library of Alexandria, one of pillars of this Earth when Philosophy and Wisdom are bought into question. In Alexandria, from the 17th to the 19th of July, ideas will be shared and discussed between people from all over the globe, once again igniting the golden cosmopolitan age of the city. As always, the conference will take place over 4 different tracks, with a variety of speakers: Keynote, invited, and other. The conference tracks this year are: * Wikimedia Communities - Interesting projects and particularities within the communities; policy creation within individual projects; conflict resolution and community dynamics; reputation and identity; multilingualism, languages and cultures; social studies. * Free Knowledge - Open access to information; ways to gather and distribute free knowledge, usage of the Wikimedia projects in education, journalism, research; ways to improve content quality and usability; copyright laws and other legal areas that interfere with Wikimedia projects. Free Content in Middle-East/Africa countries. * Technical infrastructure - Issues related to MediaWiki development and extensions; Wikimedia hardware layout; new ideas for development (including usable case studies from other wikis or similar projects). * Scientific track - Papers submitted to the scientific track were peer reviewed by scientific standards and accepted or rejected based on these reviews. The papers will be published in proceedings afterwards. Based on the number and the quality of the submission, a journal special issue may be pursued This year the conference is taking an interesting direction that hopes to enlighten third world and Middle Eastern countries about the new digital realm that is continuously expanding and evolving; as such, along with many well reputed figures, an emphasis has been put on bringing in Arab speakers. Speakers include Ahmed N. Tantawy, the Technical Director of IBM in the Middle East; Eliane Metni, the founding director of the International Education Association; Tim Spalding, the founder and lead developer of LibraryThing; Eric M. Johnson, the team leader for the Knowledge Management Action Team at the U.S. Department of State; and Usama Fayyad, Yahoo!'s executive vice president of Research & Strategic Data Solutions. Take part on one of the most important IT events of the year.
