[apologies for cross-posting.]
Hi all,
If you are a representative of a chapter, user group, or affiliate [0]
attending Wikimania and interested to talk with the Research team at
Wikimedia Foundation, we would really like to meet you. Please read
on. Otherwise, please feel free to ignore this message.
-------
One of the empowering aspects of attending Wikimania for me in the
past years has been to be able to connect to many of you in person: to
build lasting relationships, to understand the challenges that you
face in your Wikimedia related efforts, and brainstorm with you about
how/if research can help you answer some of your open questions. These
conversations have been a source of inspiration for at least a few
projects that the Research team at Wikimedia Foundation has picked up
over the past years [1]. As our team is planning for our presence in
Wikimania 2019 [2], I only hope that we can have even more of this
kind of interaction together while we're in Stockholm.
To this end and in order to make the best use of our collective time
together, I'd like to propose an experimental meet-up during this
year's Wikimania where the interested representatives of chapters,
user groups, affiliates and the members of the Research team to meet.
In order to organize this session, we need your input and I have put
together a few questions at
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe1YZmgxkJJA2lO6jl_nmOL9pwhbNu5GKV…
that I'd appreciate if you answer if you find the idea of meeting up
interesting. If you do not want to go to the link above and still want
to provide your input, please send your responses to the questions at
the end of this email to me privately.
Whether the meet-up idea ends up being a useful one for you or not
will be determined by your responses. Independent of that, I look
forward to touch-basing with many of you soon. :)
Best,
Leila
[0] From earlier conversations with chapters, user groups, and
affiliates I've got the impression that it's useful to have a
dedicated session focused on these groups and their
needs/perspectives. This being said, this is not a hard rule. :) If
you are not a representative of these groups and you'd like to attend,
you're welcome to. Please fill out the survey.

Survey questions if you don't want to fill out the survey by going to
the link provided in this email:
Description:
[The following is a tentative description of the event and it may
change based on your responses to this survey. The agenda for the meet
up will be finalized on 2019-08-07.]
Let's use the opportunity of being in Wikimania to get together and
discuss the following and beyond:
* [10-min] An update about what the Research team at Wikimedia
Foundation has done since we met last year in Wikimania. We will
provide updates on "Addressing Knowledge Gaps" and research
contributions to "Knowledge Integrity".
* [5-min] What stopped us from doing more? What challenges did we face?
* [15-min] Let's talk longer term: what does it take to have a global
network of researchers around Wikimedia projects? Why is having such a
network important? Can we work together on this?
* [30-min or more] What are some of the most pressing needs/questions
that chapters, affiliates, and user groups face? (with an eye for
converting them to research questions.)
* ...

Question 1. Are you interested to attend a meet-up with Wikimedia
Foundation's Research team?
Question 2. If your answer to the above question is Yes or Maybe,
please let us know which affiliate, user group or chapter do you
represent or are a member of?
Question 3. What is a good outcome of the meet-up for you if you
choose to attend it?
Question 4. If you have specific times and days that you cannot attend
the meet-up, please indicate them below.
Question 5. Anything else you'd like to share with us and we should
take into account when planning for this event?

Dear Liz,
I am very sad to hear that you have experienced this kind of problem! It is
certainly something unusual and I hope no one else has to deal with it.
If you don't mind, I would appreciate if you could share the hotel in
question with us organizers in case someone else reports something similar
later. You can send the info to me off-list (to john.andersson(a)wikimedia.se)
and I will share the info with the a selected few team members.
Thanks, and we look forward welcoming you to Stockholm!
Best,

Hello everyone,
We want to share with you about the *Small Wiki Toolkits*, one of the focus
areas planned for Wikimania Hackathon 2019. Some activities in this focus
area will also be conducted at the main Wikimania conference. With this
focus area, we hope to support wikis & their communities who don’t have
many technical contributors and help to connect developers and editors from
different wikis.
Editors and developers alike are invited to drop by, bring questions, offer
& get technical support - for example on wiki configuration settings, bots,
gadgets, templates - & meet during Hackathon & Wikimania to exchange on a
variety of topics :-)
You can contribute to different areas of this focus area: Hacking,
Documentation and Technical Support. Read more here for details:
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Small_wiki_toolkits.
*Between now and until Wikimania*, here are some things that you can do to
get started and to connect with fellow participants:
- If you are interested in offering technical support or discussing
topics related to this focus area during the main conference, sign up here:
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Small_wiki_toolkits#Community_boo…
(time
table)
- If you would like to introduce your problem related to this focus area
or help provide a solution to a problem, edit the section here:
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Small_wiki_toolkits#Problem_&_sol…
(problem/solution table)
- If you are planning to run a workshop or develop a toolkit at the
Hackathon, read the development guidelines here:
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Small_wiki_toolkits#Developing_wo…
.
See you soon at Wikimania! :)

Hi all,
After a couple of beautiful, sunny weeks of summer, the weather in
Stockholm has changed to cold, grey and rainy. Fingers crossed that that
means that weather in August during Wikimania will be beautiful and sunny
again!
It's not too many weeks left, and I hope the preparations for those of you
who are coming are going well! We look forward to having you in Stockholm!
A couple of updates at this point:
-
You can still book hotel rooms at the Comfort Hotel Xpress Stockholm
Central to a special discounted rate for another couple of days *- last
day 13 July*. If you are interested in this option, don't wait! On
the accommodation
page <https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Accommodation> on the
Wikimania wiki we have also listed some other possible alternatives, if you
wish to find accommodation on your own.
-
The program is still under development, and you can follow the
development on the wiki. We have however already published information on
the welcome reception and the closing party. We are excited for these
events, and hope you are so too! More information can be found here
<https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Social_events>.
-
On the Thursday before the main conference starts, Wikimedia Sverige is
arranging two culture crawls where you will be able to visit some of the
best museums in Stockholm for free. If you wish to participate in those,
check out the culture crawl site
<https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Related_activities/Culture_Crawl>
on the wiki! Don't wait with signing up if interested: there is a limited
amount of places!
-
There are also a number of other related
<https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Related_activities>
activities happening during the week. Sign up for photo walks, museum tours
and edit-a-thons with partners and friends.
Best,

Hey all,
some of you might have thought already: What's happening with the Community
Village this year?
My name is Cornelius, some of you might know me from previous Wikimanias,
or the Wikimedia Conference/Wikimedia Summit in Berlin, that I organize
annually. This year, I'm volunteer to revamp the Community Village a bit
and try out new things.
I would like to highlight two opportunities at this year's Wikimania:
- *As an individual participant:* Especially for newcomers, Wikimania is
an overwhelming event: So many participants, so many talks to choose, how
do I get to know people? We would like to introduce an easy, light-way to
get to know people. *We will contact everyone who has bought a ticket
via Eventbrite*, and will send you a form asking a couple of questions,
like your main interest at Wikimania, and a photo. Based on this info, we
will print participant cards, cluster them by main interest, and hang them:
So at one glance you will see who's there and who's interested in the same
topic like you! You can find all details regarding that in the Wikimania
wiki. <https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Community_Village>
- *As a Wikimedia affiliate:* Affiliates are an important part of the
Wikimedia movement: We would like to give them the space to present their
work via an “organizational gallery” that will connect two main conference
buildings. If you are part of a Wikimedia affiliate, you can submit a
poster that will be printed for you and hung on the organizational gallery.
If you are interested in submitting. You can find all details regarding
that in the Wikimania wiki.
<https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Community_Village> Please
note: This is not María Cruz' poster session, that focuses on projects &
initiatives. María has a different process, that is already completed.
For both, submission deadline is August 9. Of course, both opportunities
are completely voluntarily – but let's try out something new and see how it
goes! :)
I've set up a page in the Wikimania wiki explaining everything that I wrote
about:
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Community_Village
If you have questions on anything regarding that, please drop me a line.
Cheers
Cornelius
