Hi Sylvain,
no matter what the prize is, there will be people who like it more than others. You are of course right that our target audience is broader than just regular Wikimedians. The idea of the scholarship is that the winner can "present" the winning photo at Wikimania, and of course besides that it is a nice trip to Washington. Advantage is that Washington is relatively speaking just as far for any country in Europe. And similarly expensive.
To be clear, we're talking about a full scholarship, including travel, conference fee and stay.
Also, if the first prize winner really doesn't like it, he can choose between the offered prizes, the second winner gets second choice etc. It would be really great if we get a few more prizes to choose from so that everybody gets something they really like.
Best,
Lodewijk

Hello,

Hi all,
unless I'm overseeing some developments, the big prizes for the European competition are not going extremely well. There is the prize offered by Europeana of course (and the 12 calendars!), but aside from that it is still a bit empty unfortunately. In the European budget, we reserved 1500 euro for a European prize, and analogue to the Indonesian writing contest, the idea has been with several people to spend that on a "scholarship" for the winner to visit Wikimania.
Also, there is one special prize for video (from Sound & Vision), and one special prize for Art Nouveau (from Europeana). See also http://www.wikilovesmonuments.eu/awards/ .
Am I missing anything? Would there be huge objections to the scholarship idea as a first prize?
A scholarship for Wikimania would be a great idea if the contest was aimed at Wikimedians specifically... Which is not the case, as far as I know...
If the winner of the contest is not a Wikimedian, what would be the point in sending him (or her) to a 3-days conference about topics he doesn't care ?
Sylvain.
Lodewijk
