Hi all,
I'm writing only to inform you that we will organize a little editathon on Wikidata, with the target to add informations about local monuments (coordinates, adresses, categories, etc.). It will be held in Trento (Trentino-South Tyrol, north Italy). I'm quite sure that someone of you already organized something like this, but it's the first time in Italy, so I ask you for suggestions. I call it "Wikidata for WLM": https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Raduni/Wikidata_for_WLM_-_Editathon_...
I know that a lot of thing can be done automatically (for example, with QuickStatements) but this event will be the occasion also to teach and to learn the basics of Wikidata for the local wikimedian community. We also planned an "open door" for the people who needs help to upload the pictures.
This is a really neat idea. Happy to hear that you're doing it, and happy to see that you talk about it here. My 2 cents re suggestions:
* I have never organized an official Wikidatathon so what I'll tell you will be based on a very limited experience.
* I have taught a couple of times to family/relatives/colleagues how to edit Wikidata and from that limited experience I can tell you that the biggest challenge I had was to convince the participants that editing Wikidata means something.
I have done it multiple times now, and the way I do it now is that I start with explaining in 10-15 min what is the idea behind Wikidata, why we should care, and how the contributor's contributions pay back (in Wikipedia, this is much easier, cuz people press Publish and they see an article which is more complete based on their actions and they know what the value of an article for humans are). In your specific use-case, for monuments, I think you can make participants motivated if you pull up something like maps.wikilovesmonuments.org, ask them to add geocoordinates to an Italian monument in Wikidata which is currently invisible in maps (because it doesn't have geocoordinate) and then show them how the monument pops up on the map once they add coordinates.
Given that your audience will be Wikimedians, you may not have to do a lot of convincing, in which case, the above is not so useful for you. :)
Good luck with it, and do keep us updated on how it goes. We are thinking of organizing a Wikidatathon close to WikidataCON and what you learn from your experience can be very helpful for us, too. :) And do let us know if you want to write a short/long blog post for Wiki Loves Monuments blog.
Best, Lily
Greetings,
Cristian
