If paying for an online backup service, I would suggest tarsnap. The backups are encrypted from the user computer, its source code is available (with an unfree license, but that's far more than most services) and a reasonable price (50€ = $66.40 would provide a credit of 221 GB/month). The author (Colin Percival) is a FreeBSD hacker, which I consider better than paying for that to a greedy company.
However, it has the big downside of not having a friendly interface. :(
As photographers are likely to have a lot of data, I think it is worth looking at the "online backup" idea, but I would prefer if that extra storage was provided by the company as a sponsorship, rather than buying it from a company of our choice.

Do you have specific suggestions of those that don't clash too much with the open spirit community and are specifically handy to photographers?

How about prizes like online backup? Some of the pro-alternatives are quite expensive. They would be very easy to pay for though and give someone access to. Actually not only backup, but all sorts of online services could be used. /Med vänliga hälsningar, Jan Ainali/
