Instagram and Creative Commons

Dear all, a doubt: is Instagram compatible with Creative Commons? Can I upload *my* Instagram pics on Commons (so could it be used for WLM)? Please consider that I'm not suggesting Instagram pics are good for WLM (they are filtered and all, probably not very suitable for illustrating monuments on Wikipedia) but is a legal matter. Aubrey

New Program Evaluation report: Other photo upload initiatives

(again, please excuse cross-posting) Hi everyone! I posted the latest in the string of program evaluation reports on Meta today. This week's installment is on other photo upload initiatives (non-Wiki Loves Monuments ones): https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Evaluation_portal/Library/Other_ph… Highlights include: * The average photo upload initiative lasts 30 days and has 16 participants. * A total of 50,386 images were uploaded to Commons for the six reported events, and 3,456 (6.9%) images uploaded during these events were already included in Wikimedia project pages. * The average photo upload initiative generates more than 2,000 image uploads to Commons with associated direct costs just over $0.60 USD per image. We have been extremely happy and proud over what was achieved last year but still we have had to reconsider. Yesterday the team working on the international contest sadly took the decision that we will postpone the contest and review the possibility again next year. We have reached this conclusion as as there are a number of issues that have to be solved for the contest to make sense, and each of them are a potential show stopper: 1. The once again ongoing discussions on Wikimedia Commons about PD images and URAA[1] and also images under Freedom of Panorama in the source country but not in the US[2] - we feel that it would be irresponsible to use movement resources in this way if the images might end up being deleted. If the Community isn't convinced all photos might end up being deleted even if it is not necessary. We believe that these discussions need to be closer to a solution before we run this contest again; 2. We lack strong international partners/sponsors this year which means that the value of these efforts decreases and the cost would increase. Europeana the other day informed us about their new focus areas for the year - where WLPA is not prioritized; 3. The technical issues with Maarten Damers' tools. As you might know Maarten recently informed the WLM team that he will not work on moving the tools to Labs, and therefor they might all stop working shortly when the Toolserver is killed. The Ukrainian Wiki Loves Earth team has said that they can take over the work with them, but this is still not solved as far as we know - and they might not have time to help with WLPA either. In our team we sadly don't have the capacity to do this work. Additionally, there are a few new legal developments in Sweden that we are currently dealing with. The chapter is currently involved in legal actions regarding publications of photos of works of art from Sweden, as there are some legal ambiguities in Swedish legislation. This severely limits what we could have done in Sweden during the contest, as we do not want to risk contest participants being dragged into the process. Thus meaning that there will be no national contest in Sweden. Obviously you can still do a national contest if you so please, but as it seem now, Wikimedia Sverige will not take on the international coordination this year. I am really sorry for this as we all have spent time working on this and we have had great fun working with you all. We sincerely hope that we will be able to pick up the contest again in the future! Any data already collected could still be used to generate lists on Wikipedia and we could help with that if needed. If you do plan to carry on, obviously we are still available for questions and consultation if needed. On Commons and other places there have been many discussions on what we could do with photo contests in the future. This might be worth thinking a bit more about.[3] Please let us know your thoughts. I posted the latest in the string of program evaluation reports on Meta today, on Wiki Loves Monuments: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Evaluation_portal/Library/WLM Highlights of the report include: * About 17% of the images uploaded through Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 are in use on our projects. * The majority of Wiki Loves Monuments participants are new users; however, the survival rate of new users is low (1.7% of the 2012 participants made at least one edit and 1.4% uploaded at least one new file to Commons six months after the event). * Half of the existing editors who participated in Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 also participated in Wiki Loves Monuments 2013, with new users making up for the other half. * The global Wiki Loves Monuments organizing team helps support Wiki Loves Monuments organizers around the world, providing replication opportunities via direct support. This makes it easier for someone to organize their own Wiki Loves Monuments contest. Questions are welcomed and encouraged on the talk page. Hi all, in the past months I have attempted to contact all prize winners. I have still not been able to reach a few people - if you know them, or are able to contact them, please ask them to check their mailbox for my message, and also to check their spam folder. Please introduce me to them (and help with translations if they don't speak English). It would be a big waste if we can't give them the prize they deserved. RfC: Should we support MP4 Video on our sites?

Greetings! The Wikimedia Foundation's multimedia team (1) seeks your guidance on a proposal to support the MP4 video format. This digital video standard is used widely around the world to record, edit and watch videos on mobile phones, desktop computers and home video devices. It is also known as H.264/MPEG-4 or AVC. (2) Supporting the MP4 format would make it much easier for our users to view and contribute video on Wikimedia projects -- and video files could be offered in dual formats on our sites, so we could continue to support current open formats (WebM and Ogg Theora). Currently, open video files cannot be viewed on many mobile devices or web browsers without extra software, making it difficult or impossible for several hundred million monthly visitors to watch videos on our sites. And video contributions are also limited by the fact that most mobile phones and camcorders record video only in MP4 format, and that transcoding software is scarce and hard to use by casual users. However, MP4 is a patent-encumbered format, and using a proprietary format would be a departure from our current practice of only supporting open formats on our sites -- even though the licenses appear to have acceptable legal terms, with only a small fee required. We would appreciate your guidance on whether or not to support MP4 on our sites. The Request for Comments presents views both in favor and against MP4 support, and over 450 community members have already posted their recommendations. What do you think? WLM Participants' Survey: Favorite topics for future photo contests

Dear all, This might be of interest as well: "According to you, what would be the most interesting topic for a future photo contest?" The most frequent responses from the WLM 2013 participants: - Cultural heritage objects (historical buildings, etc.) - 72% of respondents - Natural heritage sites - 65% - Various types of items of which photographs are needed for specific Wikipedia articles - 41% - Artworks on public grounds - 41% - Plants - 30% - Animals - 28% Again, compared to the entire population of potential photo contest participants, there is likely to be a self-selection bias in favor of cultural heritage (only people who like to take photos of cultural heritage actually participated in the contest and were therefore polled.) And again, you'll find a per country analysis in the attachment. I think these are the survey results that are most useful for deciding which contest(s) to carry out this year. I will try to send you the results regarding the other survey questions during February. I don't have much time right now to do the analyses; and we also discovered an issue related to missing data from Thailand today which we should probably look into before continuing with the analysis. WLM Participants' Survey: Summary analysis of contact data

Dear all, Please find enclosed some summary analyses of the contact information that was collected as part of the WLM participants' survey (N = 1687): The highlights: - More than 90% of respondents would like to receive future announcements about WLM and other photo contests - Ca. 500 respondents (39%) would like to participate in the organization of photo contests! - Ca. 500 respondents (39%) would like to participate in GLAM cooperation projects - Ca. 350 respondents (27%) are interested in meeting other Wikipedians/Wikimedians - Ca. 300 respondents (24%) are interested in learning how to edit Wikipedia or to contribute to Wikimedia Commons - Ca. 100 respondents (8%) are familiar with Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons and would like to teach others how to contribute Most of them left us their contact details (either e-mail address or username). I have forwarded the file with the contact details to Lodewijk. The idea is that the international team splits the file up into one file per country that can be shared with the local WLM organizers or the local chapter. The numbers are quite certainly not representative for all the contest participants; I would expect the self-selection bias to be rather high for this question (i.e. those interested in getting more closely involved are probably more likely to participate in the survey than the others). In the attachment you will also find an analysis for each country. N.B. For reasons of data protection, the contact information is treated separately from the rest of the data.
