Hi all of you,
we finally are able to show the
draft<https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File%3AWiki_Loves_Monuments…>-
please remark these are
*not* the actual winners - of the calendar 2013. All participating
countries will receive free of charge 15 copies. If You would like to
distribute more, you may order the extra copies directly from the printing
house Umweltdruckerei <http://www.dieumweltdruckerei.de>. One copy costs
2.95 €. Freight and taxes will be charged on top. As these differ from
country to country and depend on the amount of copies ordered we are not
able to give you a general prize. If You do have a sponsor, it is possible
to add his logo on the last
page<https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File%3AWiki_Loves_Monuments…>,
if
he/she wants to use it in his/her communication. The printing house is
happy to receive your orders. The distribution starts on 8th of december.
We will communicate the link to the order form as soon as possible.
Thanks

Hey folks,
I have created a template for the UNESCO world heritage sites on
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Antarctic_Protected_Area_row . Could
some people review it if I missed anything? I would like to see lists like
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_Heritage_Sites_in_Africatransfor….
I would like to include both the information from the existing lists, and
from the website of UNESCO: http://whc.unesco.org/en/list . Take for
example http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/211 , which includes information we
don't have currently at Wikipedia such as ref_number and coordinates.
Your help would be appreciated:
* Check whether everything works properly
* Like in the current lists, the background color should be changed if the
site "in danger". I created the parameter "in_danger" for this.
* Find a way to harvest the information from the lists on Wikipedia
* Find a way to harvest the information from the UNESCO website
* Find a way to combine these informations
* Find a way to produce the lists from this
Anything I missed? Your help is appreciated!
Lodewijk
Dear all,
For the exhibition we should definitely add QRpedia codes to the photo
labels. In this context all we'd need is to put about a half-inch
square QR code somewhere on the label with the rest of the text. When
scanned with a smart phone, the phone will automatically connect to
the Wikipedia article on the subject of the photo in the preferred
language set on the phone. If no article exists in that language it
will give the scanner a choice of languages available.
Of course we would have to make sure there is an article available for
each photo, but with only 13 photos this shouldn't be too hard. It
would also be nice if each article would be translated into as many
languages as possible. As a group, we have all the tools needed to do
this fairly quickly as long as the articles get translated at the
start into one of the more commonly used languages on Wikipedia. I'd
also suggest that we make an effort to get the 13 articles translated
into the languages of the countries where the exhibition will be held.
It's general practice to add near the code some text like "From
Wikipedia" so that users know where the code connects, but I think in
this context it would be absolutely clear that the connection would be
to Wikipedia, whether or not the words were included. Note that using
Wikipedia wordmarks or trademarks would require specific permission
from the WMF, which I'd think is not worth the hassle.
All you have to do to use QRpedia is go to the site
http://qrpedia.org/ copy the url for the Wikipedia article, e.g. for
Congressional Cemetery
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congressional_Cemetery and put that text
into the lower box on the qrpedia page (where it says "Paste your
Wikipedia URL here"). In the upper box the QR code appears
immediately, and the number of languages available is displayed at the
bottom of the page. Click on the QR code and save, paste it into the
document used for the photo labels and resize. That's it.
The result might look like
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:QR_code_Congressional_Cemetery.jpg
but we'd have more text for a photo label.

Hi there,
I am happy to announce that we are now able to organise a travelling
photo exhibition consisting of the 12 winning Wiki Loves Monuments
2013 pictures, as chosen by the international jury (which, by the way,
should be announced soon!).
We intend to have the exhibition visit about 6-10 places around the
world from December 2012 until around August-September 2013, with
almost all the costs being covered from the international budget.
As I've been sending a lot of e-mails to this list in the past few
days, I'll make this long story short :-) Please read all the details
at <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Exhibi…>,
write down your names in the table at the bottom of the page, and do
not hesitate to ask questions if you'll have them :-))
The contact person from the team is Barbara who has all the details,
but the rest of the team can also help you with more general
questions.
Thanks,

Organizing the Wiki Loves Monuments World Exhibition 2013
Hello all of you,
Winners on tour: the 13 motives in the international WLM Calendar will
tour as a foto exhibition trough the world probably celebrating the
finissage in Hongkong parallel tot he Wikimania 2013 in August. The general
coordination will be done through the WLM international team.
Please insert your
data<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Documen…>,
if You would like to host the exhibition. Please remark that I am not the
best table constructor in Wkimedia. Please feel free to give me a hand ;)
Further information:
Lately we have been in touch with some printing house to find a sponsor for
the calendars. We did find one as You know, but we also find a printing
house ready to print in high quality and good price the 12 winners (a.o.)
on *alu-dibond* in an exhibition format like A1 (594 × 841 cm). And first
research on shipping costs let us come to the conclusion, that we could
have an exhibition tour with the winner - motive hosted by local partners.
As an example:
Wikimedia Austria does have the Bundes Denkmalamt as partner. Would they
like to host for two weeks in the coming year and than send it further to
the next exhibition site previewed? The exhibition would be ready for show
and delivered in two boxes including the labels to each image and the
shipping papers.
We do consider this idea a nice opportunity to show to a broader public our
achievements and to deepen the contact with local partners. It might even
help to prepare the ground for a coming Wiki loves Monuments edition 2013.
*Time line:*
Start of the Tour: not before December 2012
End of the Tour August 2013 likly in Hongkong (scheduled date for the
Wikimania)
Taken in account that the exhibition should stay at least 10 - 14 days at
each station and shipping might take some time, we could have 6 to 8
stations all together. WLM international would be able to finance the
production of the photo plates, boxes and stand for the shipping costs (up
to a certain amount). We could help with a press advisory and layouts for
promotion material. But we need Your help to find local partners.
The partner will host the exhibition and stand for promotion and press
work. Would You like to check with your partners, how they like the idea?
Curious for Your plans!
thanks

Hi there,
this is jut to remind you that the feedback page that was set up two
weeks ago on Commons is still awaiting your comments and your
involvement.
There are some great ideas being brought up on this page that you
might want to comment on; also, we are looking forward to getting more
feedback on communication, documentation, tools, mobile, translations,
and other aspects of the 2012 WLM.
The feedback page is at
<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Feedback>,
and -- unlike the organisers' survey -- will be open until
half-January, before the 2012 evaluation meeting takes place, so you
have plenty of time to think about how to improve WLM 2013 /your/ way
:-))
Thanks,

Hi all,
this is just to remind you that we are still accepting your feedback
on the organisational side of Wiki Loves Monuments 2012, both on the
international and the national levels.
Up to now, we have received /only/ 16 answers, which means that not
even half of the countries decided to provide their feedback to us :-(
Please, please let us know what you find good and what you find bad
about organising WLM this year, so we can work on making the next
edition(s) of the contest even better!
The survey is available at
<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dGMtRG5TNVdWck16X3dlTG…>,
and will remain open until November 24.
Thanks in advance for your time, and the feedback provided.

Hi all,
Now that we are brainstorming about the future of the contest, the
best advice WLM-PA can give you all is to forget about Flickr at all
for future contests. Our experience with moving photos from the Flickr
group to Commons using Flickrripper was terrible, all because of a
bug in the service API[0], for which none of the affected people has
received an answer from the API developers so far. If you add to that
the fact that after several years Flickr has not yet implemented
search by hash and issues with nominating imported photos as quality
images[1], when it comes down to WLM, Flickr is just a trash can where
to put photos for additional complications.
I would like to read about alternatives, because we in Panama are
definitely not going to do anything Flickr related next year.

Hello,
there are so beautifully and thrilling fotos all nominated for the
international competition! Some have English captions some don't. Would You
please join us in the effort to complete the English captions on the
site<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012_winners>
?
I assume that those participating countries that have not yet integrated
their winning pictures into the page will do that as soon as they publicly
announced.
Thanks for your help

Hi there,
with the participants' survey slowly reaching its end, I would like
you to spend a little of your time on filling yet another
questionnaire that I hope will come useful for the evaluation of this
year's contest and will help us to make Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 even
better than it is now.
Just like last year, we have prepared around 20 questions for you to
answer, which -- as our beta-testers report :-) -- should take about
15 minutes at maximum to go through. Unlike the participants' survey,
due to its smaller scope (in terms of surveyees), this one is based on
a Google Form, but I hope you'll be OK with it :-))
When it comes to privacy, we will of course share the results of the
survey with anyone wishing to have a look at it after analyzing and
anonymizing the results -- so if you have any feedback that you'd like
to stay private for whatever reasons, please feel free to fill out the
survey without specyfing your name(s).
The survey is available at
<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dGMtRG5TNVdWck16X3dlTG…>.
I intend to close it in two weeks from now, that is in the early UTC
morning of Saturday, November 17; I hope you'll have enough time to
fill it during that period.
Thanks in advance for your time and your feedback; as always, feel
free to ask any questions that will come to your mind, and do not
hesitate to give long answers in the survey -- the more information we
have, the better :-)
