Hi all,
would there be any interest in having a WLM meetup in Haifa on Tuesday for
those already there? Just informal, though sharing and having some dinner
together. Nothing secretive, so everybody who wants to can join. Please
shout aye if interested to get an idea of the numbers. Lets meet around
18:30 at the venue, I'll send an exact meeting point if I know one (or if
anyone has a suggestion? Unfortunately the helpdesk already closes at 1800h.
)

What different projects and success stories do we have for
adding geographic coordinates to existing articles in
various languages of Wikipedia? In some languages there
are WikiProjects, but I think they were more active some
years ago.
I tried to count now, and I think the Swedish language
Wikipedia has 32,600 geographic coordinates for its 404,000
articles or one coordinate per 12.4 articles. Is that
reasonable or is it far below the average?
I need a success story to learn from.

Hi Charles,
I thought about that too, and concluded that this would probably differ too
much from country to country. Remember the purpose of this list - just
making a nice wall with all that support Wiki Loves Monuments :) For that,
the exact title they get in your contest, doesn't matter. If it is very
important to you, you can always add a field though.

Charles,
Some countries only have one organization to deal with, but you are quite
right - the commercial partners are of a different nature than the
"government-sponsored public awareness" organizations. I think we should
lend a hand to both by making wiki pages for them, and also for the parent
government organizations (usually some ministry of culture or something like
that)

Hallo allen / hello all,
Nederlandse versie meer naar onderen.
Status of the current situation regarding Wiki Loves Monuments in Belgium:
- Luxembourg-wiki agrees to participate in Wiki Loves Monuments Belgium.
- Michiel1972 is adding the lists of monuments in Luxembourg to nl-wiki, they already are on lb-wiki.
- Both Wikimedia France as Wikimedia Netherlands have both promised to sponsor WLM BE for the prices. Thanks to Otourly and KThoelen for talking with the chapters. Otourly and KThoelen are busy to get the prices arranged and other things as well.
- MADe has said to have spoken with a heritage agency in Belgium, but we do not know much at the moment due the vacation of MADe.
- Dolledre has said he wants to look for some members of the jury.
- Romaine, Noorse and other users are currently adding descriptions to a lot of monumentlists on nl-wiki, so that the lists are fully translated in Dutch.
- SPQRobin has said he want to work on the website www.wikilovesmonuments.be , it is only waiting for the signing-in is fixed/arranged.
Maybe I missed someone, please let me know!
--------------------------------------------------
Hallo allen,
Greetings - Romaine
Hi everyone,
Everyone is busy working on their national contest. Some things you have
to do locally, other things are provided on a European level. A lot of
things were already mentioned on this list, but I would to provide a
list anyway. What are the things we can offer:
* Upload form : There is going to be an upload form per country in
multiple languages. We're working on the details with the WMF. When the
prototype is ready I expect each country to provide input (my Belarusian
is not what it used to be). I'll send around another email when I know
more (soon I hope). Notes at[1]
* Automatic categorization: If the unique identifier of a monument is
provided, it's possible to automatically categorize images after
uploadusing an automated bot which has access to the database. This is
already up and running. Take for example the Netherlands. Images are
uploaded to Category:Rijksmonumenten with a identifier
({{Rijksmonument|<id>}}). The bot keeps an eye on
category:Rijksmonumenten and tries to categorize these images every once
in a while. How does this work? Every id is in a list. A list contains a
link to Commons ({{Commonscat|<some category>}}). The bot uses this
information to categorize the image. This can be set up for every
country with unique identifiers.Example at [2].
* Automatic addition of coordinates: If you monuments have an unique
identifier and the list entry contains coordinates for a monument, a bot
will add this location ({{Object location|<lat>|<lon>}}) to the image.
This can be set up for every country with unique identifiers.Example at [3].
* Monuments api [4]: The monuments api is going to be the basis for
multiple tools:
** Monuments on the map in Open StreetMap, Google Maps & Google Earth.
This should be easy to embed in your own website. This is not finished yet.
** Augmented reality using Layar. Prototype at [5]
** Maybe more?
* Commonist:Would be great if someone can pick up the Commonist
Simplification - a simplified Commonist fork which prefills all fields
where possible and makes it useful for non-nerds. Current version
explanation available on [6]. To pick this up, you need to be able to
program in java.
Especially for the monuments api based tools we could use more help. We
already have a lot of cool local tools. It would be great if we have
some awesome European tools too from which all countries can benefit.
A full (raw) list of tools is available at

Hi everyone!
We have some problems in Denmark getting a list of listed buildings. There should be about 9,000 and they should all be online.
If you are not “technical” you can skip the rest of this mail.
They can all be seen here https://www.kulturarv.dk/fbb/ (if website works).
We have been told that it is possible to get information via webservices on this site http://www.kulturarv.dk/databaser/webservices/ and I have a username and password but I lack the knowledge to get the information.
See under “Data om bygninger” (data about buildings) and “SOAP Service”.
What we need is informations like (English - Danish):
· Name - Eventuelt navn (Betegnelse)
· Type - Bygningstype
· Original use - Oprindelig anvendelse
· Build year - Opførelsesår (ombygningsår)
· Architect - Arkitekt
· Adress - Beliggenhed (adresse)
· Municipality - Kommune
· Coord – Koordinater
· System number - Entydigt nummer (BBR? Fredningsnummer?)
· Year the building was listed - Fredningsår
We have tried and failed and we got this hint (in Danish):
“Metoden de skal kalde er findBygninger som skal kaldes med parametrene -1 for tal og ingenting for strengværdier, på nær fredningsstatus som skal være 1. Denne returnerer en liste af id´er (alle fredede bygninger i Danmark), som herefter skal benyttes til at kalde metoden eksporterBygningerXML eller eksporterBygningXML. I denne xml findes i hvert fald nogle af de oplysninger de forespørger.”
Google translation + my corrections:
”The method they should call is findBygninger (locate buildings) to be called with parameters -1 for numbers and nothing for string values, except the conservation status that must be 1. This returns a list of IDs (all listed buildings in Denmark), which should then be used to call the method eksporterBygningerXML or eksporterBygningXML. In this xml is at least some of the information they have requested.”
Some times 2 or more buildings are being protected in the same “case” and that would not be a problem if a building complex is made of more than one building. But it seems that buildings that are not even close are sometimes in the same “case”. Not sure you can use this information :-)
If you think you can help you can contact me for username and password.
Cheers
Michael / MGA73
Hi all,
please find below the well known European Country Update Overview. Please
all check out your country, and make sure it is correct. Also included a
short checklist to go through for each country.
Some of the entries are really great and inspiring! If you have more
inspiring information to share than we found, please do so!
Best,
Lodewijk
=== Checklist ===
Please check the following for your country:
* Is the relevant information on
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Progress
complete
for your country? If not: please update.
* Is your country already included in the database on
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Monumen…
.
If not, please add yourself to the to add list.
* Check if your country page is created on commons and linked from
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011 and in
the template at the bottom
* Check if your national website is linked correctly from
http://www.visuelya.de/wlmeu/
=== Country overview ===
Everybody: Basic info is available on
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Progress .
Please *everybody* check completeness and correctness there.
DEFINITELY PARTICIPATING:
*Andorra
Amical is working on organizing this. Lists are complete. All seems to be
going well. Will probably (also?) participate in a Euregion wide contest.
*Belarus
List is progressing, but not complete yet. Organization is unclear, can
someone give an update?
*Belgium
Big bottleneck is volunteers, working together with volunteers from NL&FR to
get things going. Government enthusiast. The lists are complete, but
organizationally some work to be done.
*Confederation Helvetica
Contest started already in July locally - only photos submitted in September
will be eligable to be nominated for the European contest. Clearly,
everything seems to be running smoothly.
*Denmark
Working on the lists, some volunteers joined the effort. Online part seems
all right, but organizational side is unclear. Can someone send around an
update? Commons progress table needs some updating too.
*Deutschland
Lists are an issue, as expected, due to decentralized system. In some
regions better than others. Will be organizing some local events; jury and
awards going steady.
*Eesti
Have national heritage board as a partner, have a few sponsors and seems
organizationally ok (judging website). Website is already bilingual (!).
Raul worked on a layer app etc. Lists seem more or less complete.
*España
National contest is still working on a partner and prizes. Local event is
likely to be organized in Catalonia, possibly including the whole Euregion.
Meetings with potential partners still scheduled. Lists almost complete, but
with little coordinates.
*France
Working on the lists etc, but work to be done. Employee is working on
partners etc. Awards, jury etc also still need work.
*Luxemburg
Probably going to be organized together with or as part of a Belgian
contest. Lists are complete, there are barely any volunteers. No specific
further updates. The page on Commons is still non-existant! See the relevant
link from
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011 , please
create!
*Netherlands
Have a few partners who support us materially, we have a few nice prizes to
be announced soon. Had a workshop at the national heritage board. Will
organize 5-10 local events. Prize ceremony will be at the national Wikimedia
conference. All seems well on schedule. Volunteers are reaching out to help
organize the Belgian contest.
*Österreich
Work seems to be going very well. Good cooperation with national
organizations, so organizationally and also with the list everything seems
to be going well. Also much outview for long term cooperations. The page on
Commons is still non-existant! See the relevant link from
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011 , please
create!
*Polska
Currently focusing on the lists of monuments; have successfully uploaded to
Wikipedia the complete lists of monuments as given by our partner
organisation, the National Heritage Board of Poland. At the moment, they
are working on merging them with the user-created lists as there are some
minor differences. The local rules, the budget as well as the jury are to
be announced very shortly and will (hopefully) be working on getting a
proper marketing campaign done by another of our partnership organisations.
Cooperation with two organisations that deal with school pupils are
possibly on the way.
*Portugal
Progress seems to be ongoing. Unsure about the situation on the lists but
technically everything seems smooth, and organizationally progress is being
made. Not there yet, work still to be done.
*Romania
Budget and jury are finished, lists are complete. Volunteers going well, all
seems fine. Now working on finishing touch of rules etc.
*Russia
Joined recently, as one of the last. Status still unclear, although the
lists/database seem to be worked on. The page on Commons is still
non-existant! See the relevant link from
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011 , please
create!
*Sverige
Are working closely with the local heritage organizations to organize WLM.
For the rest, the status is a bit unclear, a short update would be very
welcome. Website seems broken.
MAYBE PARTICIPATING:
*Liechtenstein
Might be organized as part of (or closely coordinated with?) the Swiss
contest. Still a bit unclear, but thanks to small country that should be
still doable.
*Norge
Situation still a bit unclear. If someone could give an update, that would
be helpful. Last information we have is that there was going to be contacts
with the Heritage board about whether or not there will be lists available.
NOT PARTICIPATING:
*Ceska Republika
Will not be able to pull it off this year due to too many other projects.
*Finland
Contrary to earlier communication, it will not be possible to motivate
enough volunteers to organize it.
*Italia
Will unfortunately probably not be able to pull it off within the set time
frame. Maybe at a later time in the year or otherwise next year. Had some
struggle in coordinating with government.
*Kosovo
Gave some initial interest, but no more information afterwards.
*Monaco
Will not be possible this year - things were too busy with the wedding
recently.
*United Kingdom
Not going to be possible due to lack of volunteers. Some interest spiked
recently, but will be too short term to pull it off.
*Ukraine
Although communicated differently, there will be no Ukraine contest this
year - misunderstanding from our side.
*Vatican City
Not going to be possible this year. Another shot next time.
Hello everybody,
We received an e-mail from someone interested in participating in the
contest, asking if it is possible to edit the photos (black and white,
sepia, etc). Has there already been some discussion about this?
Thanks,
Susana
Hi,
no, there is no Wikimedia in Liechtenstein. However, it was suggested in an
earlier stage that WMCH might organize also WLM in Liechtenstein. I never
heard back whether that was going to happen actually or not hence the status
"unknown". Considering your reaction, you never heard of that, and it was
never properly communicated through, so I assume it will not be organized
there unless I hear otherwise.
Best,
Lodewijk
