Hi Isaac,
looking at the report "page views per country" you get numbers which wikipedia versions were opened per country. https://stats.wikimedia.org/wikimedia/squids/SquidReportPageViewsPerCountryB... and you can choose "detailed version"
Looking at Nigeria and Madagascar you see for October :
(language version - thousand views - percentage of all wikipedia views in the country)
****Nigeria English Wp 32945 97.5% Igbo Wp 386 1.1% Simple English Wp 112 0.3% French Wp 97 0.3% Arabic Wp 62 0.2% German Wp 56 0.2% Russian Wp 35 0.1% Italian Wp 34 0.1% Other 49 0.2%
****Madagascar French Wp 2021 83.5% English Wp 392 16.2% German Wp 5 0.2% Other 1 0.1%
So of course SOME people do read Yoruba from Nigeria or Malegache from Madagascar but this share was less than 0,1% and thus is hidden amongst "other". Surprisingly Igbo (a pretty small wikipedia) is visible in Nigeria. Lets see if that repeats. Malagasy was visible in the last report from August, having 3000 calls and 0,01 % in Madagascar.
Checking the other way round: language views https://stats.wikimedia.org/wikimedia/squids/SquidReportPageViewsPerLanguage... (language version was viewed from which countries)
**** Yoruba (yo) (0.002% share of global total) France 44.9% United States 29.8% Germany 18.8% Other 6.5%
**** Malagasy (mg) (0.002% share of global total) France 44.9% United States 31.0% Germany 20.0% Other 4.1%
Also here the "home country" is hidden amongst "others", i.e. less than 1 percent of views of Yoruba coming from Nigeria (but more than 80% of igbo views! Did they have some PR recently??)
Cheers Ingo - Kipala

Dear Kipala,
Thanks for the clarification. I agree with your analysis and I'm sure it would be helpful in moving forward to achieving our goal of making knowledge available in all languages.
Below are the two major problems I have identified with Yoruba Wikipedia:
1. Yoruba Wikipedia is not indexed on Google and possibly on other search engines too. I discovered this sometimes in July and I informally discussed the problem with a Steward on facebook. Unfortunately, he has no idea of how to solve the problem. Yoruba Wikipedia like the English Wikipedia is a digital encyclopedia. There is no way its contents could be read if not indexed on Google or other search engines. I believe once this is resolved, there would be a significant difference. I will discuss the problem with our engineering team at the Foundation this week.
2. Yoruba is a major language in Nigeria but only 1 of 10 people are aware of its existence. I recently launched the "Yoruba Wikipedia" page on facebook to create awareness about it. In fact, I discovered recently that Yoruba language scholars and students are not even aware of anything called "Yoruba Wikipedia". I believe this can be resolved with outreach to Yoruba language department of academic institutions in Nigeria.
Furthermore, I would appreciate any advice and recommendation in solving the highlighted problems above.
Best,
Isaac

Dear Felix, dear organizers I am happy to hear (as surely all others are) that the preparations have gone well! I think it will be helpful for all participants to have a description of the place (adress, phone numbers of hotel and/or contact person on the team) we have to go from the airport, what money to have ready for taxi or what transport to use. Even if you plan to provide transport it is still good to have that because something might go wrong upon arrival (missing each other etc). Cheers Ingo - kipala
Hi Ingo,
Thanks for you genuine concerns. A document is currently being prepared and should be shared with all participants by the weekend.
It will contain all that you are asking for, however just to clear the air, there will be a shuttle to convey all participants from the airport to the hotel of stay. You arrival dates have been shared to allow the shuttle driver know when to come to the airport. Also there will be some team members to direct you to the bus, just look around for an individual(s) holding a card with the inscription *Wiki Indaba 17*.
Hope this helps....
Cheers,

Hi All,
Everybody with exception of WMF Staff joining Wiki Indaba 2017 has to be at least on a half scholarship, that takes care of your conference and transportation fees, feeding, conference packages and night activities.
Which is why Raphael stated that Florence and Alice can still join the shuttle from the airport to the Hotel.
Hope this explains....

Also, with a few days to Indaba, theprogram page still looks pretty void. Besides social activities, it’d be goodto know what is the plan for the core activities: pertaining to (accepted)submissions and the program line up itself.

Nod. I requested a half scholarship.
I figured out that the scholarship envelop is fixed and that budget used for me would mean less budget to get africans attending. The Goethe Institute is very generously providing my travel and hotel costs. WMF is very generously supporting the other costs.
And since I finally got my visa and passport in the mailbox today... I am one happy camper !

You arrival dates have been shared to allow the shuttle driver know when to come to the airport. Also there will be some team members to direct you to the bus, just look around for an individual(s) holding a card with the inscription *Wiki Indaba 17*. Hope this helps....

Hello All
Creative Commons (CC) is having its Global Summit in Toronto Canada this year - dates: 28-30 April. This year the Summit’s theme is Sharing and the Commons: What’s Next
For those of you who do not have formal CC groups or projects in your country it would be a good idea to get more involved in this great, friendly and exciting community that is part of the global open movement.
For those of you who don’t know, CC licenses are integral to helping people understand the licensing aspects of Wikipedia and its sister projects. Working in concert with CC community and using their tools to explain the licensing makes this aspect of our work much easier.
Here are the links to both registration and submission. The call for submissions closes on the 27 January. https://creativecommons.org/global-summit-2017/ https://creativecommons.org/global-summit-2017/

Hello
Just checking... is the document done or not yet ?
I'd like to get even the draft version of it tomorrow. I am basically departing home in 24 hours. And feel... errr... that I am lacking information that could be useful. So anything that can help... I am interested.
In particular, I would like to have details about an alternate means to rejoin the hotel IN CASE something goes wrong at the airport.

Thank you, Raphael. The program is good to see, but Florence was asking about "the document" Felix mentioned, with all the logistics explained. That is not the program page.
And regarding the program -- submissions had some descriptions with them. Where can we read them? For example, I don't know what the "Letter to Katherine" means, and I'm sure some other sessions, like my own "Wikipedia Clinic", may not be clear to others. Could you please paste the descriptions?
If you're too busy with preparations, I'm sure many of us are happy to help -- just give a couple of people access to the Google Form that collected the submissions, and we can help paste more information into the program page.
Finally, I am a bit worried about a 30-minute lunch. It is *doable*, but only if the lunch is in pre-packaged boxes people can rapidly grab and start eating. (is it?) Experience shows that any kind of food serving situation, where people have to stand in line and wait for one or several servers to put food in their plates, easily take up at least 20-30 minutes itself. Then the people who got food last won't have enough time to eat. If the plan *isn't* for sandwiches in boxes, I suggest you rework the schedule in advance, so that sacrifices are made calmly and after consideration, instead of ending up running late and chaotically losing time or pushing the whole schedule out.
P.S. Just today I got my passport back from the Embassy of Ghana, with my visa, so I look forward to seeing many of you in Accra! :)
