Dear all,
The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees has convened an ad hoc committee on the Movement Brand Project. Three trustees were selected to head its work, in close collaboration with the Brand team - Raju Narisetti, James Heilman and myself. Seeking to improve the Brand Project process, we are looking for community advisors to give input from various Wikimedia movement perspectives. The goal is to re-launch the brand discussions with a clear and transparent process in March 2021, and to conclude the conversations with a decision by the end of the fiscal year (July 2021).
We are writing to you today to ask that you nominate 1 member from your community to join us as advisors to the Brand Committee.
What will advisors do?
The Brand Committee is charged with developing and proposing changes to the Movement Brand Project process. The committee will produce a proposal that the full Board of Trustees will review and hopefully agree to adopt, if aligned. Advisors will support us in recognizing key stakeholder community perspectives on branding needs, processes and decision-making. They will provide input and comments on proposed changes to process and offer working solutions to challenges the committee encounters. Advisors will be able to share ideas and ask questions to their communities, as needed. The full process will be vetted and endorsed by advisors before the Board of Trustees makes its final decision on adopting these proposed changes to process and decision-making. After the proposed changes to process and decision-making are adopted, the new process will be launched in March.
What kind of commitment is needed?
Advisors can expect 6-9 hours of activity a month, in January and February 2021, though we will be aiming to launch the joint process with a first meeting during the second half of December. There will be opportunities to join committee meetings with Board members & staff, or to watch recordings of the meetings and provide feedback asynchronously. Documents and proposals will be shared among advisors for comment, review and suggestions.
What kind of advisor is the committee seeking?
The Brand Committee is looking for a small set of advisors who are able to engage thoughtfully on the importance of branding to the Wikimedia Movement’s 2030 goals. Advisors will be asked to reflect on more than processes: they will be asked to think about the strategic goals of the brand names and logos within the movement, and how to equitably structure decisions around them. Ideal advisors therefore have experience representing the movement to the public, as well as understand the internal needs of the movement’s work as something multidimensional and open.
The number of advisors will be between 7 - 9 people, in an effort to support active participation within the committee, and to keep the process on track, to “un-pause” in March. By then we strive for a clear sense of a process with which the broader community will be able to engage.
We have identified 3 main groups we would like advisors from:
-
2 advisors from affiliate leadership (Chairpersons or EDs)
-
2 advisors from the community, specifically, people who participated in authoring the Community Open Letter on Renaming (COLOR)
-
2 additional advisors from the global south / emerging and underrepresented communities*
-
1 advisor from AffCom
Please note:
* As the global south / emerging and underrepresented communities include a variety of different groups, we are actively approaching Wiki Indaba, ESEAP, IberoCoop, the India lists and the Brazilian community, asking each to nominate one advisor (if I have missed a group you believe to qualify, please let me know privately and I’ll be sure to approach them as well). Out of all applications from these groups, 2 will be chosen to complement the other 5 representatives (2 from affiliates, 2 from COLOR, 1 from AffCom). Our goal would be to choose from groups that are not already represented by other chosen advisors, with a special effort to be as diverse and inclusive as possible.
* The committee might also directly invite up to 2 additional advisors, as it sees fit.
How should advisors be nominated and added to the committee?
The committee is requesting all advisor nominations to be sent no later than December 12th (2 weeks from today), as we would like to commence work immediately, with a first joint meeting in mid-late December (before the Xmas and New Year holidays). The committee will review applications and make its final decision on advisors by December 15th.
We are asking your group to determine who will be the person to best represent your perspective. Please email shani(a)wikimedia.org with your nominations and include the following details:
-
Subject line: Nomination for the Brand Committee Advisors Task Force
-
Full name
-
Wiki Username
-
Affiliation
-
A short (!) paragraph on why you would like to be part of the process and how you believe you can contribute.
Thank you all for your participation and contribution to this process!
Shani Evenstein Sigalov,
On Behalf of the Brand Committee,
Board of Trustees, Wikimedia Foundation.

Hi everyone,
Close to 250 people participated in virtual Global Conversations that took
place on November 21 and 22. The discussion continues on December 5 and 6
and we warmly invite you to take part. Registration is open until December
4. [1]
What happened already
Nearly 50 communities and affiliates shared their priorities in advance and
can continue to do so. [2] Based on those priorities, the first set of
events on Nov. 21+22 took discussions further by asking Wikimedians from
around the world which of the 45 Movement Strategy initiatives are most
important to globally coordinate and start implementing in 2021. For some
of the initiatives, implementation means further discussions and scoping.
Take a look at the results. [3] What do you think about the priorities?
What is missing? What would make you want to play an active role in
implementation?
Coordination will vary from one initiative to another. Some can be
implemented on their own, some will involve diverse communities and
affiliates of different sizes working together, and others may require
support from the Wikimedia Foundation.
What happens next
During the next set of discussions on December 5 and 6, we will focus on
the top global priorities and start discussing what implementation can
actually look like. What are the steps needed to put Strategy into action?
Everyone’s invited to help enrich these conversations. Since implementation
will be different from one context to another, we need as many voices as
possible included to create a movement-wide implementation plan.
Based on the feedback, we would like to continue the great momentum of the
first set of events and will provide social opportunities for Wikimedians
to connect. We will also provide space to hold short lightning talks [4] on
how to implement certain initiatives. If you have ideas, please share them
with others.
If you are unable to attend, we will share the results and raw data on Meta
so we can still benefit from your input.
What is provided
As for the first set of events, we will provide live interpretation in
Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Russian, and Spanish. In the
registration form, please let us know if you require language support as
well as internet data package upgrade or childcare for the duration of the
event.
Familiarize yourself with the initiatives already prioritized, register
early, and continue the conversation on December 5 and 6. See you there.
On behalf of the Support Team,
Kaarel

Hello Everyone,
In September we asked for your participation in a pilot office hour series
which would take place over the last 3 months. December marks the end of
our pilot: we are organizing Campaign office hours to experiment with a new
communication channel about campaign practices in the movement.
The next pilot office hour will be on 2nd December at 3:00pm UTC via the
zoom link.[1] The session will focus on: Sharing lessons and strategies
from 1lib1ref, and our growth strategy in CEE for January and discussions
on the way forward for the campaign's office hour and other communication
opportunities around campaigns.
Don’t miss our last of the pilot series: we want to learn about your
questions, experiences, new ideas for content campaigns and the way to
further engage and provide support to your communities.
After the office hour, we will be evaluating our office hours, and will
reach out to learn more from your priorities about campaign communications.
Looking forward to learning, discussing and sharing with you!
Best,
Felix Nartey

Hello all,
Please help pick a name for the new Wikimedia wiki project.
This project will be a wiki where the community can work together on a
library of functions.[1] The community can create new functions, read
about them, discuss them, and share them. Some of these functions will
be used to help create language-independent Wikipedia articles that
can be displayed in any language, as part of the Abstract Wikipedia
project. But functions will also be usable in many other situations.
There will be two rounds of voting, each followed by legal review of
candidates, with broad voting beginning on 29 September and 27
October. Our goal is to have a final project name selected on 8
December. If you would like to participate, then please learn more and
vote now at meta-wiki:

Thank you.

Hi everyone,
With two weeks to go until the global meetings, the Movement Strategy
Support Team would like to share some important information with you.
The Movement Strategy Global Conversations will take place on Saturday
November 21, 11:00 to 15:00 UTC, and Sunday November 22, 17:00 to 21:00 UTC
[1]. Both events are the same, offered at different times to have
participation from different regions and communities.
Regardless of your knowledge of Movement Strategy, you’re warmly invited to
attend one of the calls. We have also developed a simple open source game
to help you brush up on your knowledge! Download the game here [2].
The focus of the meetings on Nov. 21 and 22 will be to look at priorities
identified by communities and affiliates [3], and to begin to create a
movement-wide implementation plan for 2021. Most of the work during the
calls will be in small group discussions. We will also set aside time for
socializing and (re)connecting with other Wikimedians.
Updates will be shared on wiki for parallel input and for those that are
unable to join the calls. The discussion space is already open [4]. There
will be a second set of events on December 5 and 6 to take the work further
and to discuss specific actions around the identified priorities. We will
adapt the second set of events based on the experience of the first and
welcome your feedback.
Registration
-
Please register so we can share the login information with you before
the call. [5] Registration remains open until Nov. 20.
-
The meeting will take place on Zoom. Zoom was chosen as a platform that
many Wikimedians are already familiar with and one that allows live
interpretation and breakout rooms.
Participation
-
We are exploring ways to provide support for those that need it — for
example, for a reliable internet connection, data top-up, or childcare
during the events. Please indicate this in the registration form.
-
We would also like to remind everyone of our Friendly Space policy [6]
so we could have constructive conversations and everyone feels welcomed to
contribute.
As we get closer to the events, we will share the detailed program and
other useful information with you. In the meantime, if you have any
questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Support
Team via Telegram [7], Wikimedia Chat [8] or by email at strategy2030{{at}}
wikimedia.org.
